I'd just like a MoO2 successor with updated graphics, turn based strategic combat(with auto-resolve ability), and more techs/upgrades at higher levels. No ultra-micro management Ala MoO3 and no RTS in my turn based game. You can slap a coat of paint on any of the races / racial abilities. Just as long as you don't over complicate what works. Hell, you don't need multilayer. Just make it good. All the other games mentioned in here I disliked for flavoring the game with their own fanfic ideals or grognardian masochistic needs for the games to be punishing to play. Or at least it felt that way. Except the fantasy endless space which I've never played. Edit: space empires I think I played 2. Apparently there's like a number 5 or 6 so maybe it's awesome? Atarask posted:Basically we're wanting to do a MOO2 successor with better graphics. I'm sold. You going to have anything like the Antarean fleet attacks? I always loved to try and capture them for the techs no one else could research, even if they were random.

Well the ideas all seem sound. If it can deliver, that would be pretty sweet. Xenonauts did a good job of remaking the original xcom. But no one has honestly recaptured the feel of MoO2. I'll be watching this with some hope.

So Atarask, how are things? I forgot to ask how big of a team do you have?

Atarask posted:-Races and kick rear end stuff- This looks cool as hell. Hey Atarask, what are the plans for government types / bonuses etc? The only thing I liked about MoO3 was the manual and it's explanations of governments and ruling styles. It had oligarchy, military juntas, everything. Pretty neat. Also do you plan on random events with a newscaster? Maybe with random bits of fake news about a blob singer famed through the galaxy in a scandal along with relevant happenings? I always got a kick out of those when enacting a new law in I forget the game name but you're a dragon king and have a newspaper remarking on your edicts like the sun or enquirer.

Hey, I forgot to ask. How were you guys going to do ground combat? I liked seeing the screens in the MoO series with tanks and soldiers shooting. You planning in having any of that?

Yeah this looks pretty good. Sounds like you're all working in a forward direction and that's always a plus.

So Atarask, this still alive? No site updates and you're not responding to PMs. Oh well

Bug Squash posted:I wish you well even if I've been making GBS threads on the genre. If you can pull off a decent game despite all the baggage that space 4xs bring then more power to you. I kind of like the idea of templates to keep AI from building 30 pleasure domes for no reason on my war worlds. *shrug*

This would be cool what also could be cool is to have race unique abilities per ship class per race. But that might be too complicated.

Atarask posted:So to answer the elephant in the room, yes we do know about the new Master of Orion, and we're viewing this a bit like we're Xenonauts to their XCOM. I am looking forward to playing Bulrathi and Mrrshan again (and quite happy that they didn't pull a MOO3 and kill off species they didn't like from what it seems) but I think people will get a kick out of our species and new directions for gameplay mechanics which are quite their own thing while also trying to provide gameplay a little closer to the originals with updated visuals Yeah I'd like to see the direction you guys are taking it. Your ideas sound cool especially with the Babylon 5 esque two elder races meddling in things.

I'm loving those bugs. Hey, are you guys going to do custom defeat screens for each race? I know it's an odd question but a blurb about how my people ended up as slaves or food for the race that defeated me would spur me on to victory the next time.

Atarask posted:So today we have a new article up on how faster than light (FTL) mechanics work in the game and some of the thought that went into the direction we took. (no starlanes, just plain old warp) How FTL works in a game is pretty central to a lot of the gameplay so it deserved a bit of coverage! Needs a single skull to complete the bleak. I like it!

Coffeehitler posted:I can't think of one that wasn't just using "Spiritual Successor to MOO2" as a way to separate nerds/fans from their money. LoR at least looks like a remake, while going their own way as far as the look of races and ships. The tech screen that was shown straight up uses the MOO2 tech names. Don't fix what isn't broken, etc. I like the direction so far that I've seen. Been wanting something like this for a while.

Atarask posted:It can be paused and something we're working on too is a "commander mode" like Dragon Age 1 where commands can be queued when paused. Subsystem targeting and such is done through there. Now this brings me back in when I was out for the RTS decision. Atarask posted:That being said it really seems like everyone has a different idea about what made MOO2 great. I think that when doing massive galaxies & empires and wanting to take control of world builds would help. Like allowing the player to design their own loadouts for making a forge world, science world, agriworld, production world etc would be nice. Even if you allowed players the ability to have pre-built load puts so you can get a colony and with one click let it have a long build queue it would be better than most 4x out there. 100 worlds or even thousands wouldn't be a pain to do.
