It's unfortunate it looks like they're sticking with before 16 instead of bumping that up to before 18, they really should have done that as well.

Other news organizations might feel reporting on it would break their embargo, because the only way they'd verify it was true would be comparing it to their copy. Alternatively, they may not have noticed yet. edit: here's one short article: http://talkingpointsmemo.com/livewire/niya-white-house-immigration

Lost in the "illegals" part of this is the fact that he plans to expand working visas. That's a fantastic thing. There's so many people apply to work in the US when a company wants to sponsor them, only to have their name thrown into a hat and picked from a lottery. Didn't get your name picked? Tough luck, try again next time and hope you're lucky. I guess this one is personal to me because my girlfriend gets deported if she doesn't get an H1B visa. Please don't ruin this, Republicans.

I hope she gets in, and I'm heavily in favor of immigration reform, but the H1B visa system has been heavily abused by tech companies and is partially responsible for the depressing IT job market.

This EO is just stopping deportation for some group of undocumented immigrants, right? I don't see how it would be legal to increase the number of H1B visa, etc. without a change in the law.

Yeah, that's because Skidmore and Smith author basically the leading comprehensive textbook for intro LatAm history. It's a topic that really demands the ability to examine primary sources untranslated, in my opinion.

One of the news stories I read mentioned--as kind of an aside--something about the executive order "allowing tech workers from other countries to stay in the U.S." Does anyone know the extent to which the EO is expected to expand or modify H1-Bs, or whatever else to which this aside was referring? eta: seiferguy posted:Lost in the "illegals" part of this is the fact that he plans to expand working visas.
