Just played through this last night, and I had an everloving blast. My only other Telltale experience was episode 1 of season 1 of TWD, and I thought this was much better from a mechanics standpoint. A little disappointing to learn that my actions don't have as much of an impact as they seem to, but the "illusion" that everyone keeps referencing was so well done that in the moment I was legitimately boggled by how the game, and subsequent chapters, could keep track of all the chaos I was causing.

Graphics got kind of janky at times, and sometimes lines would be completely skipped (I had closed captioning on or else I probably wouldn't even have known this was happening) Uncanny valley was an issue as well but it was easy enough to ignore. Getting the cast of the show to VA far eclipsed any graphical nitpicks I could make.

I also think this was a lot longer than TWD's first episode, or at least it felt like it was. I kept expecting it to be over but it just kept going, much to my delight.

My only complaint so far is really my own issue, in that like the TV show, I can't keep track of who the hell anyone is. There are so many names flying around. I could see being really lost if you don't know anything about the TV show, and I'm still having trouble even though I got caught up just a few months ago.

I had this problem at first too, and funnily enough the solution was the exact same as the solution to TV character confusion: read the goddamn books Codex entries.

The writers did a fantastic job of putting the player into those tough diplomatic situations you see in the show. I was downright nervous about how I'd handle myself as a boy lord dealing with an old grizzled rival lord, making sure I stood up for myself and my House without starting an unnecessary war, and again as Talia being questioned by the loving Queen of Westeros, trying not to throw my family and/or Margaery under the bus while also not getting my head cut off. I thought I was doing pretty good (even got a compliment from Tyrion!) until both Cersei and Tyrion totally called me out on my non-committal answers. That caused me to unquestionably swear fealty to the crown, which got Margaery pissed at me. drat, politicking in Westeros aint easy! Gives me a new found appreciation for what Littlefinger does.

I couldn't help but laugh when Ethan caught a sword to the neck. After watching so many characters die in the show and the books, how could I not see that coming?

The parallels between the Forresters in this story and the Starks in the main story are pretty obvious, but it doesn't come across as lazy writing to me at all; I appreciated being put in similar situations as the Stark kids and making the decisions I would have made.

I dunno actually, I imagine tie-ins with the series will be pretty interesting to see if/when they happen.

I highly doubt GRRM or D.D would let a villain like Ramsey get killed off by some nobody house introduced in Book 5, but if there's one thing that's predictable about this series it's how unpredictable it can be. Also

Well massive anticlimaxes kinda comes with the property.

But yeah, it would be pretty cool to see House Forrester pop up one way or another in either Season 5 or Book 6. But GRRM if you're reading this, if you didn't include them that's fine! Just keep writing whatever you're already writing, don't stop please. Just keep writing.

That's probably the worst part of this game: giving myself another ASoIaF thing to wait for. :smith:

$30 is for the season pass.

I think you can only buy individual episodes on mobile, and those are like $5.

I paid $5 for the first episode only on XBox 360.

I bought it through steam, but I had never played through a telltale game before and I didn't see any individual episodes for sale.

So now that I've bought this gimp horse, how long is the usual wait between episodes?

I saw something that said 6 weeks between the release of ep 1 and ep 2. Not sure if it'll be 6 weeks every time or not though

Today marked 7 weeks since the release of the first episode...there's no way we don't get Episode 2 next week, right?

Talia's song at the end was just loving awful. Ear splittingly bad and some of the worst lyrics imaginable.

You're probably right that it was unintentionally bad, but I just pretended it was intentional and it made it better. The purpose of a song, both in history and in the GoT universe, was to tell a story. While her lyric choice was pretty hamfisted and about as far from clever as you can get, it did a good job of telling the story of Ethan the Brave (or whatever other versions there are). And like Pththya-lyi said, she's not exactly an experienced songwriter, so I think that played a part as well.

Also, do we have to keep using spoiler tags? imo you'd be stupid to try to read this thread at this point if you haven't played Episode 2...

Howdy, bought this game for my boo over Christmas as her first video game experience and she loved it! Sadly, the next episode isn't due out till late March I guess? What other games would y'all recommend down the same vein? I imagine the walking dead game is an easy suggestion, but she's not much for horror or zombies.

You probably already knew this, but just in case you didn't: there are 2 episodes out right now.

Oh, and did anyone who had Rodrick rejected by Eleaena in the earlier episode act standoffish in this one? I found it pretty underhanded of her to try and lean on Rodrick's feelings for help after she'd specifically rejected helping him earlier.

Not quite, but I did succeed in keeping the betrothal intact in her earlier episode, so in this one I played like Rodrik was ~in love~ and always picked the action that came to her defense, and it actually went pretty well for me which is surprising in Westeros. Also seemed organic from a story perspective in that she would come to me when being forced to marry my enemy in order to give me a chance to fix it.

Yeah, I was quite surprised to read this thread after playing Episode 6 and see goons just tearing it apart, absolutely insulted that a game company would release such a game. The gall!!

If you looked at this as a video game you were destined to be disappointed from the start. This is less a game and more of a Game of Thrones interactive story, and if you approached it that way it was very enjoyable...at least, I enjoyed it quite a bit. Sure, I would have liked to see my actions have more of a repercussion at times, but it didn't ruin it for me like it seemed to ruin the experience for others.

Then again I read and reread The World of Ice and Fire every night like it's a loving bible, I can't get enough of this series. And not just the main show/books/plot, but I especially love ancillary stuff like this, The Hedge Knight, Princess and the Queen, etc. so this really scratched the itch for me. I found it to be well acted and written, and I'm slightly embarrassed to say that Lord Morgryn's turn took me 100% by surprise. I wish I could have seen the contented smile drift from my own face when I realized how hosed I was in his litter. I felt so stupid for not having noticed it before and I gotta give it up to the game for outsmarting me/Mira, because even if telling him to go gently caress himself HAD been an option early on, I wouldn't have done it because I trusted him.

From an aSoIaF aspect, I thought this episode was huge because it introduced a new magic into the canon that we've never seen before in Lord Forrester's bastard daughter being able to control a small army. While it was not useful to Gared or the story's plot (lol, thought that might happen), I still found it fascinating to see that exist in Westeros. I mean, everything released in this game is seen/approved by GRRM, or at least D&D, right? It's canon now?

But it is a video game, and an interactive story played out on consoles/PCs is a kind of video game too.

It is a video game of course, yes. And I think that complaint was certainly valid after episode 1, maybe 2. But all these people who continued to be frustrated at how little control they had over the story well into the end of the season is what I don't get. What were these people expecting?

Besides, I'm sure you understand what I mean when I say it's less of a video game and more of an interactive story, right? Halo, Zelda, Mario, Dark Souls, Minecraft, literally any video game out there, you're accustomed to controlling the character and, ultimately, the outcome. You play to win. This was not a game like that; it was never intended to be a game like that. Just sit back and enjoy the story and appreciate the fact that, if you want to spit in that fucker's face for what he said, you get to see how he reacts to that.

I picked up Tales of Borderlands on the last sale and MAN, the difference between that and this game is night and day. I would have never picked that when they were both announced. So much more style and fun in Borderlands.

On the other hand, I picked up the first episode of TftB a couple weeks ago for free on XBox Live and I played what I'd guess to be about half of it before putting it down, and I haven't gone back since. It's not that it was bad per se, but without the lore of GoT it's just not nearly as engaging for me. I did notice that each individual choice seems to have way more bearing on how the story goes, albiet there seemed to be less choices overall (at least in the bit that I played; I think my character had just decided to ruin his rival/new boss's career.) But ultimately that meant less interaction to me so I felt more like I was just watching something. In Game of Thrones, not only was I cool with 'just watching something' because it was in the GoT universe, but I felt like I was more a part of what was happening, even if it was ultimately superficial and had less bearing on the overall outcome than you can have with TftB.
