Your both kinda right. I accept they are showing a strong car, with great mileage and balance. They are however not pumping in qualifying laps to win headlines. So the average race day punter sees Ferrari fastest in testing again and thinks they have the best car. If Mercedes "can" go faster than that red piece of poo poo and decide not to its sandbagging.

Mercedes are using this time to nail any gremlins and will utterly dominate in Aus. I think that Mercedes know what there car can do as the changes are incremental and predictable but the others don't. Especially Mclaren with the new Honda power unit, those fuckers have to stretch the legs of it asap to see where they are asap.

Button or Raikkonen WDC would be the only things better than Alonso winning it.

yes but the teams don't. the only point in sandbagging is to convince your opponents that you're behind when you're actually ahead. but it's very, very obvious to the other teams that mercedes are still in the lead. like read what boullier said about their test today. he's super positive because in the morning they were able to consistently run with mercedes. they're still the measuring stick.

literally all mercedes are doing is running a testing program that doesn't (yet, at least) include going for fast laps. that's not sandbagging.

Sandbagging went as soon as the regs got tight... and no private testing, you do actually need the run time now, though I doubt any secret aero would be revealed till Aussie GP

But mercedes was very reliable even last year, who would expect them to go backwards in terms of reliability?

Apropos of nothing the worst comment I've heard about his helmet was from a Red Bull fan who no-poo poo complained that Vettel's helmet didn't look right with a corporate logo on the side and suggested giant Ferrari logos to be slapped onto the sides. Red Bull fans are mentally ill, glad I can support a great driver like Seb Vettel without associating myself with that rabble now.

It sometimes happens. I remember 1997 where after a rock-solid 1996 WIlliams were perpetually unable to get both of their cars to finish.

I've never forgotten staying up for Melbourne qualifying and being horrified at the gap from Villeneuve to everyone else. It was absurd and I thought the season was a bust.

Little did I know Williams would do everything possible to lose that Championship, they were just out-retarded by Schumacher at the very last race.

Villeneuve was really lucky that Schumacher did that because otherwise the whole offseason would have been people constantly saying that Schumacher deserved that title.

then again, it's not like it worked out for Villeneuve in the long run

then again, in the super long run, Schumi is a vegetable

1997 was such a good season, I think it has the best midfield I've ever seen. You had the top three teams in Ferrari/Williams/McLaren, but everyone else other than Minardi/Tyrrell were able to challenge the leaders on occasion. Even Arrows came good at the end of the year.

Schumacher and Irvine were the most interesting pairing as well. The 90s were great.

Schumacher had some truly absurdly good drives in '97, and despite the fact I couldn't stand him he was compelling viewing.

Younger Villeneuve was bad and it's a shame that statistically he is the most successful Canadian driver. In our defense there has been like 5-6 ever.

Yeah lol. That Minardi was a pretty car, too. I wonder how it would have done if Minardi could have afforded a non-poo poo engine, I think I remember hearing complimentary things about the chassis.

Until the Stoddart Era Minardi usually had a good chassis with garbage engines. Those Hart V8s they were using were essentially unchanged from 1995, were down something like 100hp on the other engines.
