What is Football Superstars?

FS is a F2P (with a cash shop; more on that later) soccer football "MMO" created by a bunch of Brits. You start out as a scrawny 20 something talent and you work your way up to becoming a superstar...dun dun dun. If you are expecting a polished, FIFA-like game, don't be. The beauty of FS is in it's simplicity.

What almost seems like it was modeled after a Half-Life mod, Football Superstars has an FPS feel to it. The controls should feel familiar. The action is cut and dried; you have anywhere from 5 to 11 players per team, each with their own position (which can be swapped if requested). Games are generally 10 minutes long (not counting "injury time") with a break at halftime, just like real football.

So what about the "MMO" elements?

Well, you gain levels and you have an avatar who you can equip with stuff (ie. shoes, shin pads, shirts, consumables, etc). One thing to note, though, equipment only lasts for a certain amount of matches. Thankfully, most equipment can be bought with in game money.

There are two types of skills you can select for your avatar: passive and boosts. Boosts are toggle-able and passives are self explanatory. When I say "skill", I don't mean throwing a banana peel to trip up other players. Each skill adds to a certain stat either permanently or while active.

When it comes to stats you have three ways of increasing them: play matches, work out at the gym, and use equipment, consumables, boosts, etc. You gain 6 gym points per level, which you can use to train skills that add to your overall totals. Also, as you play in matches you gain stats passively for doing the actions that correspond to it, so play, play, play and play some more.

Ok, so get to the cash shop

Everything in this game is purchased with either cash shop credits or the built-in currency. Initially, yes, the cash shop does have an advantage due to being able to purchase higher ranks of passive skills (non-cash shop is restricted to rank one). And they have slightly superior cash-shop only equipment, which, fortunately, doesn't make much difference in the end game.

Fear not about the initial cash shop advantage. The playing field evens out as you level. This game is more about your level of skill than anything.

Are there any negatives?

Well, yes. This game is badly in need of a goon rush. :gifttank: The most active server (and server we play on), Pele, hits medium population during primetime. Most of the player base has been playing for a while. Division 2 and Division 4 (of 4) are the most populated, so it's pretty tough to find games in the lower bracket (impossible during off hours). Also, most of the player base either doesn't or refuses to speak english, so communication with pubbies will be shoddy at best.

TLDR

Pros:
-Simple, team-based game play
-Hilariously bad AI
-Tournaments for the competition-inclined
-Cash shop does not have an advantage at the high end

Cons:
-Low server population
-Tough to find games in lower bracket
-Mostly non-english speakers

How do I play with goons?

Hang out in IRC: SynIRC #goonstars https://client00.chat.mibbit.com/

-Create a character on Pele

-Add my character Simplefred in-game

I'll keep an updated list of goons as more join.

In the gym, you want to max out speed first and then endurance. Don't waste your money on drinks and equipment until your fame increases and you start to bring in a larger take-home pay.
