You know what's amazing about this? Last night, I was up in the suite level of Joe Louis Arena, and one of the suites had a bachelor party that everyone intended to get out of control. The guys wanted to get kicked out of the rink, complete with strippers, flinging alcohol, breaking things, all of that.

I had a conversation about creepers in hockey with someone, because it's Kids Day at the Joe and these assholes are getting rough with strippers. Literally had to have the conversation with others on what to do if this turns into a fight, or some kind of violence against the escorts thing. Luckily, it didn't go that far, but was it something to mentally prepare to step in on that sort of thing.

I'm just going to straight out guess they were Canadians.

They didn't sound like Canadians, they sounded like creepy guys in their early 30's.

However, there were a lot of Canadians at the Joe yesterday, with Vancouver in town.

The Red Wings wear whites at home 2-3 times a year. It's cleared with the NHL so the other team knows to bring the right jerseys, and it's typically done when a team is in town for a one-game road trip.

I wish NBCSN had a boner for Marty Brodeur like ESPN does for LeBron/Johnny Football/Favre/Danica/Tiger/The Yankees/The Sawx, because Marty's STL debut is a game I would watch amidst my CBJ-related hockey doldrums.

Speaking of the Jackets, they're saying "Look, we're not gonna deploy the parachute and declare ourselves McDavid Bowl contenders, buuuuuuuuuuuuut...."

if NBC has that kind of boner for Marty, maybe they'll put the game on a sister network

My point being, how much longer could the NHL afford for one of their premier marques to be in such bad shape? How does that franchise turnaround without Toews and Kane?

Keep in mind that the Blackhawks started to become a promoted team at the 2009 Winter Classic. That was the first time Chicago really got any mainstream NHL attention. Next season, Chicago won the Cup, and they've been a marquee franchise ever since.

From around 1995 to 2004, here were the NHL's most heavily-promoted franchises, for the most part:
- Detroit
- Colorado
- Philadelphia
- NY Rangers
- Pittsburgh
- Montreal
- Toronto
- Pittsburgh
- Dallas

Odds are, most of your Fox and ABC afternoon games featured those teams, your promoted playoff series featured those teams, and all of that. Nine teams, and realistically 7-8 depending on the year.

Since the canceled season, here's how that list has changed.

- Detroit, Philadelphia, NY Rangers, Montreal, Toronto all stay top-level franchises.
- Colorado and Dallas dropped off after the lockout and their '90s stars retired.
- Pittsburgh dropped down in 03-04, but came immediately back with Crosby.
- Washington became a top team with Ovechkin.
- Boston became a marketable team again.
- Chicago became a relevant franchise again.
- Vancouver was a high-seller from 08-13.
- Buffalo became a top team due to high TV ratings in Buffalo, and are still promoted like a popular team.
- Los Angeles became the top team over the last couple seasons, and now carries that reputation.
- Expanded TV contracts have allowed for a variety of second-tier promoted teams (San Jose, Anaheim, Minnesota, St. Louis) that wouldn't have gotten as much national attention in the old system.

Essentially, the NHL went from five absolute money-draws to twelve, plus four or five more solid teams. The whole system has shifted forward.

In Chicago's case, it's much more than just becoming promotable. The Blackhawks weren't even relevant from 1998-2008. They were good but never great before then, but Chicago really bottomed out for those ten years. (For example, the Red Wings played 13 different Western Conference teams in the playoffs from 1996 until playing Chicago in 2009. Including the Winnipeg Jets, in their last playoff series.) The Blackhawks weren't a team to be interested in for Detroit fans, they were a team to be vaguely pitied, while we looked towards other games on the schedule.

Toews and Kane didn't just turn an old premier team back again, they basically resurrected a team from as low as it could possibly be for that caliber of franchise.

The interesting thing is that Forbes is basically saying the opposite. I certainly don't disagree with your evidence, but Forbes is basically saying Leafs, Habs, B'hawks, Bruins, Rangers, Canucks keep the league going.

I'm pretty sure those are all teams with big markets, own their modern arenas, and have huge media deals sized to their market.

Also, keep in mind that the Blackhawks didn't have a real TV deal until 2009, because Bill Wirtz opposed airing home games on TV.

If you mean Original Six teams, replace Canucks with Red Wings.

...until the new arena comes.

Right now, the Wings have very little revenue from luxury boxes and premium seating, as compared to other teams. That will change in three years. Also, the new arena will be team-owned, not rented for $1.

If the power isn't fully restored at the Joe by 3:30 or so, the game will be postponed. It would take at least that long to fully set up the arena for the game tonight, especially the catering.
