Maybe the aliens didn’t know what water was before they landed

Maybe the aliens aren't weak to just water. They're weak to all the hosed up pollution and microplastics in Earth's water.

I like the movie a lot up till the goofy rear end ending. If it had been a little different I think it would be an all timer up there with Six Sense.

I will always love Signs and think it's the one M. Night movie that I find easiest to go back to and watch and enjoy despite already knowing the twists. Glad the guys seemed to enjoy it too even though there's obviously plot holes (honk honk)

My big brain take is that the water is not deadly to the aliens, its actually faith. The whole movie is about losing/reclaiming faith, it's mentioned that the 'weakness' is first discovered in middle east where there isn't exactly a bunch of water, every contrived thing that leads to the end of the movie is based on 'having faith', water is used to baptize people irl, and I have to believe that aliens that can traverse space are not stupid enough to land on a planet that is like 80% covered by and routinely has storms full of 'MY ONE WEAKNESS!'. So it's not water that kills the aliens, it's faith. Which is even dumber. The movie is moody, though.

its a bad plot contrivance that also doesn't really stand up to what we've already seen in the movie, like how tf is a dude that is allergic to water to the point where it makes their skin sizzle walking through the RAIN FOREST in brazil or through a growing cornfield? You ever walk through tall grass in the spring or summer? You're gonna get soaked. But aside from that it does what M. Night is good at, presenting a creepy atmosphere. Sixth Sense, Unbreakable, and Knock at the Cabin all rule though.

I'm pretty sure that is the intended reading, yeah.

I mean that’s fine but it could have been better thought out. Never really thought about it till they mentioned it but Shyamalan knows how to direct, he gets poo poo on a lot (rightfully so), but he does know what he’s doing. Fuckers made me want to watch Trap now.

In memory of Gene Hackman, cross posting this: Favorite/Best Gene Hackman role or movie? I gotta say Unforgiven because he stole that poo poo right out from under Clint Eastwood The Firm was pretty great and I forgot all about The Conversation. Hoosiers is probably his...largest role, I'd say. The one where he's truly front and center and he loving crushed that poo poo. loving LEX LUTHOR for the first time on the big screen in Superman Couple things that came up about Hackman talking about him at work today - Christ, no one knew he was 95. I sure as poo poo didn't. - One guy said that if he were to sum him up in one word, it would be "believable" and I thought was pretty apt. He never took you out of a film with lovely acting EVER - Did he ever give a bad performance? - Someone said he always looked old(ish) and never really looked different or seemed to age. Dude started out looking 50 or 60 and ALWAYS looked that way. How many films have WHM done with him in it? A LOT I think. Hackman was always loving great.

Signs is better and more entertaining that The Sixth Sense

I've got a soft spot for The Quick and the Dead in general, but Hackman is one of the best parts. He manages to infuse what should be this cartoon villain with a fair amount of depth and pathos, WITHOUT trying to play him for sympathy.

ONE YEAR LATER posted:been mainlining melr0210 and the billy voice sure is something else, just listened to the mingo episode. HOH!! I don’t think I retained a single thing about this week’s movie but Clint Eastwood IS: The Ally is my favorite bit in a while

I wish Billy actually did talk like that. He’s so boring in every clip I’ve seen.

The Billy tangent was great, this was a really great episode. "Steve is the exact opposite of Will Smith" had me irl laughing

My favorite is when it seeps in by accident, Andrew had a couple exasperated HUHs with 8 heads in a duffel bag that were amusingly close to Billy-voice

It's funny. I rented 8 Heads in a Duffle Bag once by accident because I got the title mixed up with Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels. I guess it was due to the combination of numbers and implied violence in the name (plus I I listened to the WHM episode and I don't remember one damned thing about the film except that it really sucked. Not even sure I finished it.

Nah they just sound extremely suspicious of garbage disposals, possibly from a lifetime of watching bad movies where people get torn to poo poo by one. But I think they're nice to have and I don't think I've lived in an apartment that didn't have one. Maybe they're less common in NY?

You’d think after getting a super sad Gleep Glossary and Nexus for Listener Request Month they wouldn’t plant the idea of a Requiem For A Dream WLM in the audience’s heads because guess what I will submit every year for now on.

Bip Roberts posted:People with old world pipes don't believe you can just feed a whole Costco rotisserie chicken straight down your kitchen drain no sweat I think like a decade ago when AOC got elected she didn’t know what a garbage disposal even was and the ensuing online discourse is what I think informed me that yeah places like NYC with old plumbing flat out don’t have disposals because it would lead to plumbing problems in apartment buildings. Part of it may be them exaggerating for obvious comedic effect, but since they’re all from NY for sure they had periods where they flat out didn’t have them.
