I ran the Ad-Nauseum extension for awhile on Chrome, and had all the tracking bullshit turned on for Google; instead of just blocking ads, that extension clicks on every ad it blocks. They had me pegged at the wrong age, and interested in random poo poo like country music and parenting (I hate country and have no kids).

Google banned it from their store, you had to install it in developer mode, but I don't think it works with newer versions of Chrome (the ones that disabled most ad-blocking extensions).

The underlying phenomena could also be that "people who own dogs also have enough income to donate to charity" or "people looking into getting a dog also look for other causes that bring them happiness" etc. but usually there is not enough data to make any in-depth connections. Science press is usually mostly a joke; how many "breaking news on life on Mars" we have gotten and still, only evidence of very strong maybe to the side of "yes, there used to be bacteria here".

Profiling poorly isn't even a new concept: watch a comedy on "action channel" and you get ads for activity parks, cars, tools, hobbies. Now watch the same movie again in a family channel and you get ads for toys, sales at supermarkets, hygiene products, holiday resorts etc. And you most probably selected the channel because that time slot was more convenient for you, but the system does not care about one instance, when the expected trend is somewhere else. So yes, its a guessing game where all the individual numbers are meaningless but the trend is the thing.

On some TV channels all the ads ever would be online casino's, cars and alcohol, but the local laws here forbid alcohol ads entirely and online casinos can only advertise after 2200 in the evening.
There was a woman on NPR talking about this a year or two ago. At one point in the early days of Facebook, there was a page about waffle fries that a Ph.D. candidate with a lot of friends shared. A bunch of those friends liked and shared with their friends, etc.

So, now, liking waffle fries is correlated with being highly educated, which in a data analysis sense is true, even though the two have nothing to do with each other.

Okay but isn't whiskey usually brown or yellow? Something to do with barrels or something? And that beverage is a very clear pink. Like the pink was added to a colourless beverage, not a brown one. A pink vodka would be fine, but a pink whisky is shenanigans.

There are white whiskeys that haven't been aged as long and/or not in wooden barrels.

Also, that Lady Jack "whiskey" is only 40 proof (most whiskeys are 80-160), so there are some sort of other shenanigans going on with it.

Generally code enforcement is civil until your gently caress up kills someone. Then it may still be civil. The AHJ for this can vary a bit. I know the Office of the State Fire Marshall does some code enforcement in CA. I imagine local code enforcement departments might review it during permitting. It's also possible the University system is exempted but I doubt it's likely. So the local building code office and the Fire Marshall is your best bet.

I don't touch fire code very much, but NFRPA 101 does specify how many doors per people is required. 2 is the minimum. And the number goes up per X number of people. Someone here likely knows the fire code better and could say how many it is but it's more than 2.

I was thinking less of a code enforcement perspective, and more of a "responsible use of public funds" perspective.

This is definitely an underappreciated aspect of these "disruptive" app based services. I think most people, at this point, recognize that they're ignoring regulations and gig-ifying labor costs, but on top of that a ton of them aren't even concerned with making money. The business plan is literally

1. Burn through VC money to capture the market
2. ???
3. Profit

I think a lot of it for the VCs is essentially considered lobbying costs. They want to make people reliant on these services, so they can push through policies like Prop 22 in California. Once they fundamentally undermine labor law, that's where the big money is.
