What has better battery life, a Pixel XL or an iPhone 7 Plus?

I'm bout to go Big Phone and never look back.

Is the Pixel 2 being only announced on the 4th, or are preorders or sales starting that day too? I'm not familiar with how Google does things.

Might cancel my 2XL and pick up the regular 2.

Anyone with the Pixel 2 having any problems?

Went to the Verizon store to play with the Pixel 2XL... the screen is just as terrible as reviews are saying. You start noticing it at around 15 degrees of tilt. Canceled my 2XL order and went with the regular 2 instead.

How much of this Pixel 2 XL bashing is from people who actually got one?

Like I don't get mine until the 15th but I have this weird policy of not talking like an expert about stuff I don't know about.

Lots of Verizon stores have demos out so you can see for yourself.

I wonder how much I would get back trading in my Pixel 2 for a 2XL once (and if) they get their poo poo together and fix the screen in a few months.

I've never ordered from the Google Store before. Is it normal to go past the "Ships" date and still not have tracking info? You'd think it would either say that it shipped, or update the dates if it didn't.

Do you guys think Google will start accepting Pixel 2 trade-ins before the Pixel 3 comes out? Thinking of keeping an eye on the LG situation and if the screen problem is solved, trading up from my Pixel 2 to a 2XL in six months or whatever.

My Pixel 2 had the high pitch whine + clicking during phone calls. Support said to turn off NFC.

That solved it.

I'm guessing a software update will solve the NFC loving with the speakers?

Also, anyone else having a weird delay in the SMS app? I'll press send on a text, and it won't show up inline for up to 1 minute. Also it's taking ~10 seconds for a text to go out.

I just switched from AT&T to Project Fi a few hours ago, so it could be my number not being properly routed yet or something... Very weird.

Is there a setting I've overlooked where swipe dismissing a reminder notification marks that reminder complete? I wanna take them off of my Google calendar simultaneously, not just out of the notification list.

I'm on Pixel 2.

Is the originally Pixel XL still a decently fast phone?

My wife loves my Pixel 2 as far as the basic experience, but needs a headphone jack and bigger screen. She's coming from an iPhone 6, so I figure it would still be a noticeable upgrade.

It's either OG XL, or the new V30.

smoobles

So... What's the best current Android phone with a headphone jack?

smoobles
Sep 4, 2014

That's what I was afraid of. I love my Pixel 2's software lightness and speed, but my wife needs a headphone jack. It sounds like any phone in that category is going to sacrifice speed and/or have some lovely Bixby feature to get in your way.

Uh weird problem, maybe one of you guys can help?

I moved my wife from iPhone 6 -> Google Pixel XL, and transfered all photos and text messages. Everything went great, except the text messages don't show the inline photos that were sent over the years.

Instead, every SMS photo she ever sent shows up in the Photos app categorized as "today", making the photo browsing very annoying, and not showing any of them in their text message context.

Any ideas what we should do?

Hey, anyone know the best way to sync a PC folder OR Dropbox folder full of images with a photo album on android?

Keyword being ALBUM. Google Upload only lets you sync it to "Google Photos" at large, where it scatters them among rest of your photos by date, in a big loving mess.

I don't want these pictures mixed in with all my photos (no they're not porn, it's work related I promise)

Hmm that complicates things. My goal is to be able to easily post images from a constantly changing Dropbox folder full of promo images to various social media apps using my phone.

As far as I know, the Photos app is the only way to quickly share a photo to another app... so is there an approach I'm not thinking of? I'm relatively new to Android.

smoobles
Sep 4, 2014

Dropbox doesn't though so I guess I should take this to the ANDROID APPS THREAD unless anyone's got any quicktips, I don't want to derail any further.

edit: as it turns out, I'm stupid. Dropbox lets you open a photo in Photos which lets you share it to social media apps, so it's just a 2 step thing. Problem solved.

I have a predicament!

My (Pixel 2) text messages to my wife (Pixel 1 XL) constantly fail to go through. Even when they DO go through, they say "delivery failed" for me. This does not happen when texting any other person.

Both of us are former iPhone/iMessage users, we switched over about the same time. I strongly suspect this could have something to do with it.

Could this be true??

How do you manually delete poo poo from an Android phone? I wanted to backup/delete my texts with my wife to speed up the messages app, but there are 50,000 of them and apparently my Pixel 2 can't handle deleting that much stuff without crashing or giving up.

Is there a way to like, plug it into my PC and manually wipe just one SMS thread?

smoobles

I factory reset & restored my Pixel 2, but it doesn't remember any of my app logins. What the gently caress did I do wrong? I don't wanna sign into all my poo poo again. :( Google remembers that stuff so my idiot brain doesn't have to.

All my autofill stuff is missing.

Pixel 3 is a bit of a letdown, but I do wonder what would constitute a "major upgrade" these days, now that phones have been lightning fast and had all the features a human being could possibly need for the past 3 years now.

So umm on the subject of headphone jacks. In TYOOL 2019, what is the best android phone that still has one?

My wife's Pixel XL is becoming a piece of poo poo and it's upgrade time. She won't budge on the issue of dongles, and how much she hates them.

The Samsung Galaxies look fine, but can you switch the stupid Bixby button to open Google Assistant? Bixby is nuclear poo poo.

How do I get rid of the 5 most used app recommendations appearing when I swipe up from bottom?

That's a stupid rear end feature that nobody asked for. I managed to turn it off for the homescreen on Android 9, but in Android 10 they snuck it into a new place.

This poo poo right here (on the bottom):

I have no idea where to ask this but it's an issue I have never run into before in my lifetime of cell phone use. I am on a sprint android and a friend is on a verizon iphone, occasionally when I send a text, this is what happens:

Me: "Hey what are you doing tonight? Wanna get some beers"
They Receive: "Hey woah did the night? Wanna got them boats"

It's not like the texts are getting truncated or lost, they are actually coming in completely malformed with what looks like some busted spell correction. I have NO idea what it's about and am totally baffled. This one person is the only person I am having this issue with and the same is mutual on their side.

This is incredible, why would you try to fix this? Your life is now more interesting. Leave it alone.

I don't understand this gestures thing, especially the swipe to go back. I guess it's useful for people who use their phone with two hands, but if I'm reading lots of Something Awful or Reddit the idea of doing thumb cardio to go back 5 levels is... too much.

Tried out gestures, and gave up after 10 minutes of reading SA in bed because my thumb was sore.

I'm wondering if the Pixel 4's forehead is the same height has the bottom nav buttons. I'm a big fan of the Pixel 3's vertical symmetry, but I also use 3 button nav, so maybe the 4 will look nice too.

Did an Android update get rid of recommended share-to apps? The share feature in Google Maps used to put my usual car nav app at the top, since I most often shared addresses to that app.

Now it just gives me a list of all possible apps, so I have to scroll a bunch to get to it each time.

I'm not sure if an update changed this, or if I accidentally disabled a feature, any tips?

I feel like it's really hard to compare phones in a meaningful way. I've got an original Pixel that I got in November 2016, and I know it's coming to the end of its lifespan in two respects: (1) the software no longer getting updates and (2) the battery no longer lasting like it used to. Obviously, I know that if I get a Pixel 4 (or 3a, or wait for a 4a or 5), both of those problems are going to be solved for a few years.

But, I don't know how to compare differences in build quality, camera quality, processing speed... let alone if I compare my phone and the newer Pixels with other Android options like Galaxy or OnePlus. is there a good site or tool for that?

I find it's better to upgrade your phone every 2-3 years for this reason (and to save money obviously). You won't notice big changes from one year to the next, but a 2020 phone compared to a 2017 phone will almost certainly make you think "oh yeah this is a huge leap from my old phone".

It's subjective definitely.

Ah good to know, my wife has a Galaxy S10 so we can take good photos of bugs using hers.

Another dumb Q, maybe this is the wrong thread... what's the simplest way to share URLs from an android phone to an iPad? We just found an old iPad Air 2 and are using it as a kitchen ipad now, would be nice to find recipes on our phones and send them to the ipad quickly.
