I personally wouldn't mind seeing a female secret agent of 00 status, in James Bonds world. I adored Michelle Yeoh and Rosamund Pike. Introduce some of the other 00 agents, give them names, then spin them off into a solo movie or three. Do the whole franchise thing Hollywood is so enamoured of lately.

Never having seen Monsters Ball, Im not entirely sure how Halle got the Oscar - I've never seen her in anything that warranted such. Jinx certainly backs that up. I couldnt figure it out. But hey, cast Felicity Jones, Daisy Ridley, Emily Blunt, etc. Get some Bond luminaries in there - Diana Rigg, Jane Seymour, Honor Blackman, Daniela Bianchi - to fill out the roles; I'd watch it! Never happen, of course.

A period piece, genderswapped Felix Leighter film. I'd say race swapped but that already happened and also I just realized we're back to Jinx again.

Lots and lots of blowjobs. This is what I remember of Monster's Ball outside of Hale Berry & Billy Bob Thornton. Puff Daddy was a con waiting to be executed. Heath Ledger had an insanely bit part in the movie, to such a degree that it seemed odd that a guy with a bit of a name was even in the role and he disappears for good VERY early. It looked like Hale Berry & Angelina Joilee's ex hosed FOR REALS on camera and the original score, especially over the end, was very stirring. But nothing you give Academy Awards over.

I remember it being a pretty good performance. Certainly not the worst academy award performance. Super uncool to imply that she slept her way to an award.

Halle Berry is just noticeably in over her head in every action role she's ever been in. Which makes it incredibly strange that there have been multiple attempts to make her an action star

I would imagine it's mostly that starvation at work, plus Berry having been legitimately bankable for a couple years helped.

The formula of "fund a shitton of microbudget movies, repeat until one is successful" seems to have given us a ton of male stars, visionary directors and comedy leads, why the gently caress not a black female action star. The call for more films helmed and staring people of color is loud as gently caress. I legit do not understand the issue with trying to put together something to meet a market like that. Is the fallout from Scott Pilgrim so bad that "never trust the internet" is ingrained in every studio's marketing plan right now?

It doesn't help that right now Hollywood doesn't make many low-budget action films; at least, ones that get theatrically released. There just isn't as much hunger for down-and-dirty no-frills action as there was in, say, the 80's and 90's, where most of the people you think of as action heroes got their start.

I'm not saying they shouldn't do that to many more, I'm just offering a justification for why Berry was getting an action star push in spite of... not really being suited to it.

Were there any other casting choices for Jinx? Or was it Halle Berry, done and dusted? I always like the idea of a competent female partner (or adversary) for Bond - I absolutely loved Michelle Yeoh in Tomorrow Never Dies. Its a shame that the rot had well and truly set in for Brosnan's Bond by that film. She deserved better. But then, I guess, so did Pierce.

Halle Berry is the highest profile Bond girl at the time of casting that there has been, so it makes sense that they had to give her more to do in the role than other Bond girls. I think the problem is they just really needed to go in different direction with her character than female American Bond, because she could not pull that off at all.

I like it, but it's in a weird place where it's a really well-made movie with classy actors built to showcase Carano's ability to convincingly gently caress people up. Her acting isn't great, but she's playing a one-note badass like Dirty Harry so I don't really think it hurts the movie. It's like if one of Steven Segal's early movies before he got fat was cast like Oscar bait and directed by someone good.
