Well, not to go full wehraboo, but that's only fair when some nations get tanks that were prototyped in the late 60s. As far as I'm concerned, the only thing WG has to do to keep german tanks fun for everyone is to keep them balanced. I don't mind if something like the E50M exists, because it's legit fun to play and actually well balanced, but stuff like the WTE100 shouldn't have ever been put in the game.

Should I be gunning straight for higher tiers, or should I faff around within each tier before moving up? Or is it something best left to my discretion.

Once you get to like tier 5 (6 for some lines, I guess) you will pretty much only be playing tanks that actually have a fighting chance, provided you do your job, and you won't be feeling as powerless as you would have while playing some legit poo poo tier 3 and 4. Thing is, you have to understand what is the *quirk* of those tanks and use it to your advantage : don't bring a squishy hill fighter to a close range city fight, don't bring a low alpha sniper to a knife fight, don't drive a slow but tough heavy tank in the middle of a field and so on... Use that grind to learn how to play each tank to its best, how to use the terrain to your advantage, where you can kind of reliably expect to pen enemy tanks of you tier and above, what tanks should you kill quickly when they show up (protip : if you can get your team rid of a dangerous tank quickly, they are that much more likely to win. At least statistically)...

Also there's absolutely no shame in not immediately buying the tank you just unlocked and selling the current one, if there's a tank you enjoy playing, keep it, worst case scenario you're having fun while training your crew.

I think the mistake a lot of bad player make is rushing to tier 10 and wondering why they still can't play for poo poo. Tiers 1 and 2 are here so you learn simple stuff like how to drive and shoot tanks, 3 and 4 so you understand slightly more advanced stuff like gun depression and armor; 5, 6, 7 and 8 are here to basically be the advanced level class about hard to get stuff like armor angling, flanking tactics or camo/spotting mechanics. 9 and 10 are the endgame content where you have to constantly put to work what you learned before, and you WILL suffer if you get there too fast.

That's why I personally believe that WG should split the "first" german tank destroyer line in two : one "big tough TDs that don't need no man" and one "fast, low/mid alpha TDs that support medium pushes"

Big tough TDs that don't need no man : move the Ferdinand to tier 7, while removing it's 12,8 gun and taking away some of it's mobility. It gets to keep a 8,8 L71 with good rate of fire, and it's armor is now worth something at tier. Tier 8 is a now nerfed JTiger that "only" gets the shorter 12,8 and, once again, nerfed mobility; however it's now actually decent at keeping a lane closed down thanks to it's armor, gun and good DPM and it can still snipe with some degree of efficiency when it lands in a tier 10 game, but it will get mercilessly wrecked by mediums engaging it at close range because it's traverse will be garbage. Tier 9 is now a JPE75 (such originality), and I don't think there's a need to exactly explain how this would work, gets the long 12,8, good armor, gets recked at close range yadda yadda. Tier 10 is still our good buddy the JPE100.

"Mobile" TD,
Begins at tier 4 with a turreted rear end in a top hat : the Pz.Sfl.Ic, basically a PzII ausf.G with an open turret mounting the PaK 50L60, so an extremely mobile, high camo, low alpha, good RoF light TD that kinda mimics the M8A1, and apparently 2 prototypes were built, so it's relatively historically accurate. Tier 5 is mostly a matter of convenience and getting something cool : E10, that one german TD that WG already has a model for that had hydraulic supsension or some poo poo, looks rad, moves fast, no armor, 7,5 PaK L48 (maybe also a 10.5?) with good soft stats. About as historical as the rest of the Entwicklung family. Tier 6 would be the Stug. Auf Leopard, which as the name implies would be an assault gun/TD based on the VK1602 Leopard Chassis, armed with a 7.5 L70 and is kinda historical, as in "plans were drawn, wooden mockups were made, Hitler cancelled the project to give the Maus more fundings or some poo poo". Tier 7 is a basically unchanged JPanther that we all know and love, kinda historical except for the 105mm gun, but who cares. Same for tier 8, except I'd be tempted to have it get a TD version of the E50's top 105. Tier 9 is a JPE50, so basically an E50 mounting the 12,8 that we all know and love, historicity is uh... "yeah this was planned, kinda, sure". Tier 10 would be a JPE50-M and I don't think I have to explain what it would exactly entails, aside from the fact it would basically get an improved 12,8 main gun firing all APCR or some poo poo, or maybe a 15cm shooting low velocity HEAT. Anyway, something entirely unhistorical, but it's not like the WTE100 doesn't exist anyway.

At least that's what I would do if I was WG, but I admit I haven't done enough research on the topic yet (and that I'd rather see another medium or heavy line for the americans first).

Well, it IS a light tank, so it will pretty much always be at the bottom of the list, but as far as I remember the Leo was a pretty fun tank, even if it did take much more finesse than the Luchs. Now, I don't want to sound like a jerk, but you're using the 3cm gun, right? The 5cm is kind of a trap that limits you more than anything, the Leo is meant to be driven close to any distracted enemy so you can unload 12 rounds in a second into their soft, flabby rear, damaging the engine and possibly setting them on fire. Also getting marks of excellence is hilarious on such a tiny gun.

But yeah, German light tanks tend to be slightly harder to use than let's say american or chinese all-rounders light tanks because they always feel much more specialized. Leo isn't really good at passive spotting, VK2801 needs to shoot 105 HEAT like it's going out of fashion to survive instead of getting a reliable 75/76mm gun like its counterparts, Awful Panther had NO camo and feels like playing the regular Panther on suicide mode. Actually only the RU251 feels like an actually well thought out and reliable light tank, with a great gun, decent camo and good mobility.

Try to watch some good replays, maybe that will help to understand what the Leo is supposed to do.

Seriously though, I think getting those missions is less a matter of being extremely good and poopsocking and more a matter of planning carefully, bringing the best tank possible for the mission and getting lucky (good map/team that isn't too poo poo or too good). I mean, I managed to get HT15, TD15 and LT15 with honor (all of them) on the same day by playing the VK4502B (10 tries, maybe?) T30 (about 8 tries to get 5k damage) and WZ132 (that one was a real pain tho). Having a platoon of competent people to help you with some objectives is also a godsend (repping my good buddies GiantHurtBall and l33tc4k3). Also don't hesitate to be smart and exploit the wording of the missions : doing 3 times your hp in damage as a JPE100 is going to be much harder than doing about 1000 hp in a decent T67 game. Killing 5 tanks of 3 different types is going to be much easier and relaxing in a churchill III (it moves forward and shoots fast) platoon than in a E100 (it moves forward but doesn't really shoot fast) platoon.

Then of course you have the total rear end in a top hat missions like "set an enemy on fire", "capture the base", "do damage while unspotted" that only exist to be as annoying and luck-based as humanly possible.

All of what he said is solid advice. Other stuff that really helps :

- Platooning with someone good is like the best thing that can happen to you, because you learn faster, you can actually expect support from at least 1 player, and if you die you get to watch how a good player does it.
- Learn tank weakspots, their gun stats (mostly the alpha, reload and overall accuracy) and how they tend to behave in battle (drive fast/tank shells/snipe from afar?). Ideally you don't need to know exactly if that part of the armor of a particular tank is 85 or 92 millimeters thick or if the top speed is 34 or 38kph, just if you can reliably expect to penetrate it with the tanks you have or if you can reliably run away if you can't.
- Always have a plan, and be ready to quickly adjust your plan as the battle unfolds. If that plan fails, be ready to sell your life dearly, might win your team a few extra seconds.
- Make the best of your tank. That means using the best modules, getting camo when useful, using the best equipment you can afford and shooting gold when you have to. It's better to spend 4k creds on a shell and win thanks to that than only shoot 720 creds worth of standard ammo and lose. Also, get consummables, next time I see a full health Tiger burn to death because fire extinguishers are too expensive, I swear to god I will find where that rear end in a top hat lives and skullfuck him to death.
- If your odds are good, go for kills instead of damage (within reason, don't waste a 152mm shell on a 35hp target if you have friendly tanks near you that can take care of it), it's always good to remove one enemy gun from the battlefield.
- If there's a tank you don't like and do terrible in, grind it out then sell it and never touch it again. Don't force yourself to play tanks you can't play well in, no point in that.
