One concept for "Frontier but not terrible" is making the five elemental warriors that work for Cherubimon also teenagers with attitude. Keep Mercurymon voiced by Darran Norris though. Hell, those other humans who showed up in one episode were implied to be the ones who were meant for those spirits so use them.

The closest Pokemon ever got to what Kizuna was trying(?) to impart were those Eeveelution trainers in Sun and Moon who all have jobs and families and poo poo and are doing their best to make time for both their responsibilities and battles. Notably, the idea that once you turn 20 Pokemon suddenly vanish from your life is not present here.
