Super interesting analysis, I was definitely looking at the board in a very different light. Are spectator posts common in Diplomacy games?

I've seen them often enough here on SA, though I'm not sure Pintrest wants me coloring people's decisions. Not sure where viewers would be able to go see your own confessionals, but in the older versions of the hobby in fanzines you'd see analysis and after-action reports all the time. There's tons of neat analysis out there, the game's older and was more popular than you'd think based on its relative obscurity today.

I'd love to hear how you were seeing the board, but that'd be tipping your hand to the other players.

I guess this is on me for not specifying it on the OP, but please no spectator posts commenting on the game/player strategy.

Whoops. Removed. Is there anywhere planned to discuss this?

I mean don't get me wrong, I'd love to give a yearly analysis if people enjoy it, but I just want to preface further discussion by saying my opinions are more based on decades-old strategy articles than on a wealth of practical experience.

Not that I should be butting in again, but my 1902 review is definitely marked by a burgeoning Western Triple alliance, most likely as a response to the initial cries of Juggernaut. But in lieu of a full analysis I'll just offer an old poem:

The Juggernauty posted:

'Twas Autumn, and the Turkish fleet
Did thorn and threaten in the Black:
An army in Armenia,
And Russia seemed under attack.

'Beware the Juggernaut, my friend!
The roll that steams, the plots that hatch!
Beware the pseudo war, and end
The devious center snatch!'

They took their rattled swords in hand:
Long time the battle fake they fought-
Unsurety plagued Hungary,
And the Archduke paused in thought.

And, as he paused with waffling thoughts,
The Juggernaut, to his great shame,
Came crashing through the Balkan dots,
And gobbled as it came!

Spring, Fall! Spring, Fall! And all to all
The Juggernaut just grew and grew!
The nations died in R-T tide:
The game, alas, was through.

But canst thou slay the Juggernaut?
Hark to my words, my I-A hearts!
Ally today, with no delay!
And stop it 'ere it starts.

'Twas Autumn, and the Turkish fleet
Did thorn and threaten in the Black:
An army in Armenia,
And Russia seemed under attack.

I remember once seeing a Diplomacy variant that had the sea waters rise each turn, and whoever had control of the final extant supply center won the game.

The Variant Bank is busted, but you can still navigate using the Wayback machine. The name of the variant is Deluge

Thanks! I googled it and found this:

I haven't cross-referenced the map with your link to see if it's accurate but it looks certainly like a very interesting setup regardless.

Considering the page you posted links back to the Variant Bank, I'm inclined to think they match up.

I think I'm more interested in the Sahara variant though
e:That, or Seismic Diplomacy

I'm thinking about hosting a game of Diplomacy this weekend. Anything I need to know about running it irl? I plan on fixing Milan on the board and having that software JJ linked earlier handy.

Have lots of snacks and booze. Diplomacy takes a couple of hours, so you'll have to keep interest up. Hopefully by the time the knives come out your buddies will be tipsy enough to take the betrayals in stride.

Am I correct in saying that England, Germany, and France could claim a three-way victory right now?

I mean, if they wanted to sit on their hands a couple turns, they've nearly established a stalemate line and could wait out any conflict in the east and draw with the survivor. The question becomes if every party involved is willing to wait that long.

I think I drastically overestimated the importance of Trust this game. I made a promise to myself to play as legitimately as possible and that was kind of dumb. If I had betrayed bowmore at some point I might have had a shot, maybe? I was also dumb to let Taste talk me into allowing Hal to live.

Doubt it would have held up much better, seems like almost all the countries were interested in upholding their alliances this game. But you're right that most people need to watch out for their self interest rather than deferring to someone else in order to keep the game fun. Otherwise it becomes a pub-stomp without the entitled rage that makes pubstomps fun.
