--------------------- Welcome to the 4th edition of the Pro Dota Thread (Previous threads 1 2 3) There are professional Defense of the Ancients Two events taking place every day all over the world, and this is the place for live reactions and commentary. Posting here is more relaxed than in the main Dota 2 thread, and more in line with SAS GDT or TVIV style posting. The main Dota 2 thread is located here. Since this is the next biggest tourney coming up, the OP will reflect on it likely up until TI5 rolls around. This is the Dota 2 Asia Championship, starting on January 5th with the American Qualifiers, and when all is said and done 16 teams total will be competing for the top prize in the event, which is currently at $557,788 but is a number that will surely be climbing due to the addition of Compendium sales which I will go over later. Games will be streamed both on Twitch.tv and in-client, links will be posted when available. http://dac.dota2.com.cn/announcement/index_eng.htm Schedule: January 5th-6th: American Qualifiers January 8th-11th: European Qualifiers January 10th-15th: Asian Qualifiers January 28th: Wild Card Qualifiers MEET THE TEAMS The Invites Invictus Gaming quote:iG sports the 2nd most tournament winnings since TI3. Highlights include 1st place at ESL Frankfurt, 1st place in the 2014 WPC ACE, 2nd place in the 2013 WPC ACE, and 1st in the Redbull ECL 2014. Ferrari_430 Feichi Luo June Shiyang Lin Ch Chen Li Xi Yinqi Luo ChuaNHock Chuan Wong LGD Gaming quote:LGD began as For The Dream, which won SMM 2009, later that year FTD was sponsored by LGD. The team has been a powerhouse of the Chinese scene ever since. The team was struck hard during the great Chinese reshuffle of 2011, when the team lost 4 of its players to Invictus Gaming. Despite the efforts of ZSMJ to rebuild, the team was unable to regain its former strength leading to the iconic carry to retire. He was replaced by Sylar, a move which eventually allowed them to regain their position as one of the leading teams in China Yao Zhengzheng Yao Sylar Jiajun Liu Faith Hongda Zeng MMY Zengrong Lei Injuly Xiaodong Yang Newbee Winners of TI4 quote:Newbee earned a direct invite to TI4 but struggled initially, finishing 7-8 in the second playoff phase before defeating LGD Gaming and Mousesports in tiebreakers for 9th place. However, they did not lose another series the rest of the way, first defeating Titan, Natus Vincere and Invictus Gaming to progress to the top 8 main event in the winners' side. At the main event, they defeated Vici Gaming and then Evil Geniuses to set up an all-Chinese grand final against Vici Gaming - which was also a matchup of two teams who enjoy forming deathballs. VG took the first game, but Newbee came back to take the next three and the $5 million first prize, including a 19-3 blitzing in the decisive Game 4 in just over 15 minutes.[/b] Hao Zhihao Chen Mu Pan Zhang Banana Jiao Wang Sansheng Zhaohui Wang Rabbit Zhang Wang Vici Gaming quote:Vici Gaming enjoyed some mild success at the start of its formation as a team but ultimately fell short in many tournaments. Despite placing at many events Vici would not achieve another title in the TI3 to TI4 season, however at TI4 they earned a direct invite, and there they placed first overall in the group stages and took second, losing to Newbee 3-1 in the finals. Black^ Dominik Reitmeier Super Junhao Xie iceiceice Daryl Koh Pei Xiang fy Linsen Xu Fenrir Chao Lu MVP Phoenix quote:Not a whole lot to say about them, they placed either 1st or 2nd at all of the Korean Dota Leagues held in 2014, and were able to qualify for the first phase of the TI4 playoffs where they knocked out Virtus.pro, but were eliminated by Liquid. However they are still pretty big fan favorites in Korea, so look out for a Korean cast whenever they are playing because the casters get pretty into it. March Taewon Park QO Sunyeob Kim Forev Sangdon Lee Heen Seunggon Lee Reisen Junyeong Lee Rave quote:I honestly never heard of these guys before the announcement of the Asia Championships so I'm gonna be pulling a little hard from Liquipedia on this one: "Rave is a Filipino DotA 2 team based in Korea with Korean management. The organization was formerly known as EoT Hammer. Half way through season 2 of the Korean Dota 2 League Rave recruited Michael "ninjaboogie" Ross as their hard support, with Jeyo rotating to the mid lane and pYung focusing on managing and coaching the team." Cast Mark Pilar ryOyr Ryo Hasegawa nb Michael Ross Jeyo Jio Madayag Chrissy Djardel Mampusti Evil Geniuses quote:Evil Geniuses has had a rocky road in the DotA 2 scene in the past, with a website dedicated to their old playstyle (http://whendidegthrowlast.com/ hasn't been updated for a long time unfortunately) they went through a big reshuffle. This reshuffle ended with a monster of a lineup that dominated with a 16-2 run. After losing a player to a self-sidelining with carpal tunnel (play at right angles, kids!) the team picked up a standin and carried him to 3rd place at TI4, netting a cool $1mil off of that run alone. The team has since gone through a pretty big shuffle of players, losing Arteezy and Zai to the next up team, while gaining players Sumail and Aui_2000 to fill the gaps. Time will tell as to how well this shuffle works out for them, Secret and the third team that was involved in the shuffle, Cloud9 PPD Peter Dager Fear Clinton Loomis Universe Saahil Arora Aui_2000 Kurtis Daniel Ling Sumail Syed Sumail Hassan Team Secret quote:Formed in the post TI4 player shuffle, Secret was composed of some of the most dominant players in their respective positions and it showed. Quickly rising to one of the top ranked teams, they have been showing strong performance after strong performance and look to be one of the more dominant teams as we move into the new year. By watching games in client or on Twitch, you can earn special ingame drops. These drops will be tied to specific ingame events, such as first bloods or multikills, and will be tagged with the time, date, and players involved. For most tournaments, you will have to have bought the ticket to be eligible for drops. I want to earn cool hat drops and level up my Meepo set but I'm stuck going to the movies with my wife. What can I do? You have two options. Using the console command dota_spectator_auto_spectate_games leagueid you can set Dota 2 to automatically join tournament games of a given tournament. See this page for individual league IDs. Alternatively, you can link your twitch.tv account to Steam, making you eligible for ingame item drops. What's worse than nerds talking about nerds who play video games for money? Nerds who are paid to talk over nerds playing video games for money! That's right, this section is gonna be about Dota 2 Commentators, commonly referred to as Casters. Here are some of the more prominent and well known ones: Casters: TobiWan quote:Tobi has been casting for Dota 2 since the earliest inception of it, even being able to commentate for a majority of the very first International, as well as the finals of the first 3. He is well known throughout all of the Dota community for many things, such as being a pretty good caster, being terrible at dota, and being a racist . Dota community being the Dota community, the last two are overlooked since the first part is redeemable enough for him to get by. Plus, hes Australian, its not like he can help it. The International 1 & 4 + Finals The International 2 The International 3 The Defense tourneys Ayesee quote:Probably has the most "Sports Commentator-y" voice out of all of the Dota 2 casters, and thats one of the few redeemable things about his casting. Is somehow worse in terms of game knowledge than Tobi, and likes to use repetitive one-liners and old sayings to pad out his casting. Rumors have followed him that he doesn't really care about the game as a whole either, most of these stem from the fact that he was nowhere to be found during International matches while the rest of the casters were gathered watching the games and trying to pick up on specific things to talk about. Nevertheless, hes still given charge of things although I personally haven't seen him in quite some time. The International 2 The International 3 The International 4 (? can't actually find info on this so this is an assumption) Hyperx Dota 2 League (D2L) Synderen quote:One of the few "Players turned casters", Synderen was originally only off and on casting, popping up during a few games of TI2 and during The Defense seasons 1 and 2, however he has been casting more often than playing as of late. Part of the very excellent XMG Captain's Draft, he's managed to carry along his co-caster's somewhat spastic and not-good casting style through sheer game knowledge and analysis. XMG Captains Draft Invitational XMG Captains Draft Invitational 2.0 The International 2 The Defense Season 1 & 2 The International 4 SUNSFan quote:SUNSFan co-owns the popular Dota 2 YouTube Channel DotaCinema, and is slowly becoming a more prominent caster as of late. Him and co-caster Synderen both cast for the XMG Captains Draft Invitational, which is run by DotaCinema, and he along with many others participated in the The Summit tourney as one of many casters. XMG Captains Draft Invitational XMG Captains Draft Invitational 2.0 The Summit 2 The International 4 Beyond The Summit Here lie the two major studios of Dota 2 Casting. First up is Beyond The Summit. They're in charge of The Summit tourney, which for people familiar with Homestory Cup is quite possibly the closest we'll ever get to that in terms of similarity sadly it will never match up to Homestory but w/e. They feature casters such as: LD quote:LD is arguably the best caster in the scene right now, with some of his casts being the highest viewed out of all Dota 2 games. Him along with GoDz have casted both Western and Eastern Dota, and were some of the first people to cast Chinese dota for western audiences. One of the few faults of his is he does tend to overhype and sometimes exaggerate in his casting. Nevertheless, Valve has acknowledged his casting popularity and quality, and as a result he has casted the finals for TI2 onwards. The Summit 1 & 2 The International 2 & 3(Finals) The International 4 G-League G-1 Champions League GoDz quote:One of the first casters to provide consistent English casts of the Eastern Dota scene. In 2012, GoDz formed the BTS studios and was later asked by Valve to come on to the analyst desk for TI2. He has since been brought on each additional year, as well as running his own events at the BTS studio The International 2, 3 & 4 (Analyst Desk) G-League The Summit G-1 Champions League The GD Studio Formed by James "2GD" Harding, the GD Studio has been part of several events, most prominent of them being DreamHack and by extension the Dota 2 DreamLeague. They have also ran the very popular EUHub during The International, where a majority of dota players and personalities gathered to watch the TI4 qualifier games. They formerly covered Quake back during the studios inception but have since moved on to greener pastures. Their casters include: 2GD quote:The man himself, 2GD has moved through several games before finally settling in to Dota. While he himself doesn't cast many events, he has popped up in DreamLeague casts from time to time. Runs the studio and has a few side projects as well. One of the most notable is a game that was last known to have been put on hold while he developed the GD Studio further known as Reborn, and was meant to be an 'esports game'. DreamHack(multiple and for different games) DreamLeague Seasons 1 & 2 The International 2, 3 & 4 (Analyst Desk) LuminousInverse quote:Lumi has been around for a while and has switched from BTS to GD Studio in recent times. Was one of the primary casters for TI2, as well as TI3 and 4, casting the finals at each of the events. In between TI's, he has been with The GD Studio for each of the DreamLeagues and has casted at the DreamHack LAN finals following the DreamLeague tourneys. The International 2, 3 & 4 (finals) DreamLeague Seasons 1 & 2 DreamHack Draskyl quote:Known as Dadskyl due to his love for old rock and roll (known as dad music). Originally a caster for the Raidcall Dota 2 League alongside Ayesee, he was picked up along with several other personalities during the formation of the GD Studio's Dota 2 transition. Was formerly a pro HoN player and is among the few casters with good game knowledge (and a 5k+ mmr rating). As a result, his casts are among the most informed. Has casted at TI2 and 3 alongside Ayesee and was on the analyst desk during the playoffs at TI4. D2L The International 2, 3 DreamLeague Seasons 1 & 2 DreamHack Dota 2 Lan Finals Sheever quote:Sheever has been casting Dota 2 for quite some time, and was invited to do interviews at TI2 and did casting at TI3. Unfortunately due to an overlay gaff and resulting angry tirade she directed at herself live on stream, she was relegated to the playoffs analyst desk at TI4. Has recently partnered up with The GD Studio along with Shaneomad to cast future events. The International 2 (interviews) The International 3 The International 4 (playoffs analyst desk) varius Dota Tourneys Statsman Bruno quote:The man with a suit for every occasion, Bruno has been playing Dota since 6.20. His interest in stats for the game wasn't sparked until the first International, but from there he began working on a project which was later to become the now defunct dota-academy, which created with the help of partner "shostakovich", was meant to be a "robust statistical system for the entire competitive scene." He originally met James at just prior to TI2, where after being able to meet with and get to know him, James offered him a spot on the analyst desk, and thus a legend was made. Since the start of 2013, Bruno has officially joined the GD Studio. Has yet to show up to an event unprepared. Arteezy is a cool dude. Instead of setting up a PayPal donation thing for himself on his stream, he's going to donate everything he gets to a charity. Better than EE's anime fund.

I don't think Liquid will be picking up a new team for a while. Who knows for Fnatic? With that being said I can't wait for mouz to pick up a team right before Ti5, only for them to fall apart 3 weeks after the event's over.
