Wikipedia posted:Hitler and Franco met at Hendaye, France on 23 October 1940 to fix the details of an alliance. By this time, the advantages had become less clear for either side. Franco asked for too much from Hitler. In exchange for entering the war alongside the alliance of Germany and Italy, Franco, among many things, demanded heavy fortification of the Canary Islands as well as large quantities of grain, fuel, armed vehicles, military aircraft and other armaments. In response to Franco's nearly impossible demands, Hitler threatened Franco with a possible annexation of Spanish territory by Vichy France. At the end of the day, no agreement was reached. A few days later in Germany, Hitler would famously tell Mussolini, "I prefer to have three or four of my own teeth pulled out than to speak to that man again!" It is subject to historical debate whether Franco overplayed his hand by demanding too much from Hitler for Spanish entry into the war, or if he deliberately stymied the German dictator by setting the price for his alliance unrealistically high knowing full well that Hitler would refuse his demands and thus save Spain from entering another devastating war. Also, Abwehr chief Wilhelm Canaris, who secretly relayed information to Franco about the German plans, might have convinced Franco not to agree to Hitler's demands. I am curious what would've made Franco actually join the war, though I don't think the pressure from the racialists and other fascists in Spain (the country protected Jews historically) would've been enough, even in the event of the fall of Gibraltar (all other things being historical). Franco also disliked Hitler for his intense cultism (positive Christianity?). --- So are you going to be playing as all sides? Readingaccount fucked around with this message at 13:21 on Jan 6, 2015 |

Thanks for the chit! Why are the frogmen destroyed upon completion? I understand they must've had pretty drat high casualty rates, but to be rendered completely ineffective? Though they are Italian units, so...

Where ya planning to send me? I don't mind any place really, as long as my air wings get to see action (ship itself too if necessary). Huh, whaddaya know... wikipedia posted:The French fleet was widely dispersed. Some vessels were in port in France; others had escaped from France to British controlled ports, mainly in Britain itself or Alexandria in Egypt. At the first stage of Operation Catapult, the ships in the British ports of Plymouth and Portsmouth were simply boarded on the night of 3 July 1940. The then largest submarine in the world, the Surcouf, which had sought refuge in Portsmouth in June 1940 following the German invasion of France, resisted the British operation. In capturing the submarine, two British officers and one French sailor were killed. Other ships were the two obsolete battleships Paris and Courbet, the destroyers Triomphant and the Léopard, eight torpedo boats, five submarines (the Minerve, Junon) and a number of other ships of lesser importance. Sordid history for the largest submarine of the time. Was looking up Free French Naval forces, but it wasn't very informative: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Free_French_Naval_Forces This List of Ships of the Free French Naval Forces was better: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_ships_of_the_Free_French_Naval_Forces There's two battleships, the Paris and the Courbet. They're kind of obsolete though. Readingaccount fucked around with this message at 08:59 on Jan 15, 2015 |

Hmmm, we need to make sure the British Empire is strengthened from this, and avoid decolonization in the future. C'mon guys, we need more British units on the board so we can give Her Majesty's Government the best advice!

Why did neutral countries allow warships to operate routinely from out of their ports? Did they pack up their tiny guns and hide them below deck or something? Though with armaments that small I suppose it'd be easier to claim self defense than disassemble. Readingaccount fucked around with this message at 09:40 on Jan 23, 2015 |

Thanks guys. Can the USA send Britain aid immediately each impulse/two months? Also, can the allies annex territories? It'd be really cool to oppress the Irish again and help America dominate the hell out South America. And expand their colonial Empires! He means the F3F chit on the Béarn. I've seen bits of this game be played. With strategical hindsight (not tactical, German units were not that superior, if French doctrines could have been corrected...) France stopping Germany is more likely than historical with players of even skill on both sides, but it is very hard. Readingaccount fucked around with this message at 09:27 on Jan 28, 2015 |

Yeah, I could be flat out wrong, it was a long time ago. Some players thought France might have a small chance if the weather is really bad, and Germany/Italy prioritize other targets first and the allies go all-out on holding France. Though if it can even work it would mean huge territorial losses around the Mediterranean at the very least. Btw., is the Ark Royal on the map? I can't seem to find it. Advice to High Command: Aggressively defend the Mediterranean, engaging at sea if the situation is favorable or even (port strikes are to be considered of course, but should be secondary to a warm welcome to any maneuvers the Italians voluntarily makes in the open sea, in particular offensive Italian maneuvers). Our outposts in the Mediterranean must be protected. I hereby request the Ark Royal and Plymouth Battlegroup set sail to reinforce the Mediterranean Theater for patrol duty from the Gibraltar to the Suez. I also advice that we reinforce the land forces in Egypt and engage the Italians in Libya. Readingaccount fucked around with this message at 20:54 on Jan 31, 2015 |

Acknowledged HQ, reinforcements to the Med and the Libyan border as logistically convenient. As regards Generals Pig Nog's suggestion we must vote against/refuse our participation on the grounds that if France falls, not unthinkable given their mass mutiny in the Great war, then Spain will be next. And the communist dominatrd republicans there could have just not turned an election victory into an overnight revolutionary massacre anyway. Welcome to the Commonwealth, free ships! Could we work out a deal where you don't advice Washington not to give us full aid when it becomes possible? A healthy Commonwealth is a powerful launching pad for America, our areas directly border you and if lost would simply be restored at greater expense, limiting your ability to conquer more neutrals. I do agree we should maybe not max aid to the commies if they do well, but we wasps should stick together.

Both low countries to GB, fighters & bombers to GB It's only natural... Btw., I assume the penalties for declaring war on Italy preemptively are harsh? Did we really need that bomber over starting repair on more of our damaged ships? I think we might need those ships back if Germany decides to try a Battle of Britain and succeeds, more than reducing German production resulting in units being deployed from 1941 and onwards. Well, we shall stand loyaly with our allies. Mighty France shall show those German and Russian autocracies what for! Their alliance after all proves the hollowness of their ideology. They seek only to spread their power and conquer our righteous democracies! Readingaccount fucked around with this message at 09:00 on Feb 27, 2015 |
