I totally forgot about Todd Carney. Edited it in but I'm actually excited to see how badly he fucks up this season. I'm sure he will, it's just a matter of how long it takes.

In the first game of Super League, Widnes Vikings, down to twelve men early on after Patrick Ah Van was shown a very harsh red card for a high tackle, came from 16-0 down to draw against Wigan Warriors 22-22.

Excellent second half performance from the Vikings, and especially Joe Mellor, but if the refereeing performance was anything to go by, we're in for a shocking season.

It should've been a red, I think.

Even worse refereeing in the saints dragons game. The dragons had a perfectly legitimate try disallowed and, from the same incident, saints got a completely bizarre penalty, and pushed up to score. After that a shoulder charge to the head went unpunished, which should have been a red. Joel Moon of the rhinos received a red towards the end of last season for the same challenge. Im bitter.

Easy victory for saints really, and they're going to be difficult to beat again this year. Im off to rovers v Leeds on Sunday and I hope the ref doesn't impact the outcome, unless he gives us loads of decisions and not hull.

Also, my best ever Leeds player retweeted me ftw

Just on the way to watch Leeds Widnes. Overheard a big group of Widnes fans, all late teens early twenties, talking about causing aggro with Leeds fans.

Lovely.

You're allowed to tackle in the air in NRL? That seems like an odd thing to allow

An attacking player catching a kick can be tackled in the air in the NRL, but the rule about not lifting past the horizontal still applies. A defending player defusing a bomb can't be touched until he touches the ground.

This is stupid, and dangerous, IMO

The new super league rule which forces refs to give a decision before sending it to the screen, is ridiculous.

Cas tigers just scored a perfectly good try against the dragons, but because the camera couldn't see the (definitely onside) winger as the ball was kicked, the ref's original call stands. Even though it's really obviously wrong.

iajanus posted:

I like the attacking player being allowed to be hit in mid air as they're normally the ones with any momentum in challenges and it makes it a bit farcical to defend kicks into the ingoal if you have to let them come down (with the current levels of skill exhibited by the wingers/back).

I disagree with all of this. when a player is tackled in the air nobody has control of what happens next.

You're still allowed, in super league, to challenge in the air, but as soon as a player has control of the ball you have to let him land.

St. Helens are really bad, Souths are really good, or both?

Saints haven't been thrashed like this since last year's loss to Warrington at Langtree Park. Certainly puts the Salford result from last week into perspective.

Saints were shocking. Souths are a fantastic side and were a pleasure to watch (that defence, holy poo poo), but saints are usually much better than they showed here. Some of those lads should be embarrassed.

Yeah, right at the 79:15 mark the Giants got a massive breakaway that Leeds simply did not look prepared to defend, which almost cost the game. Leeds have so much talent and drive, they just need to focus on doing the basic stuff right. Like staying flat and tight on defense.

McDermott's interview at the end--especially his comments on Huddersfield's play style and the refereeing--was all kinds of :stare:

We got a decision right near the end that, having seen it again on TV, we should never have had. We need to improve, quickly.
