My coach finally managed to get some good footage out of me after months of trying. If you turn the audio on you can hear how happy he is and my unusually crisp hit. I'm starting to get some more distance and speed with my short and mid irons with no speed training, just working on the technique. https://i.imgur.com/C9IWDPg.mp4

It feels like poo poo to hit it thin or on the toe, why would they not want to chase the feel of hitting the center of the face? Have they only ever played rock hard distance balls and don't know? Seriously buy the dude a sleeve of ChromeSoft or DuoSofts and see if he can tell a difference or not. Hitting the middle of the face feels amazing.

Yeah when I moved from forged to cast I lost a lot of feel but after playing with the new irons for a few months I started getting a pretty good feel of exactly where I hit it on the face and how open/closed the face was. During practice I only have two priorities, work on stuff coach told me to and hit the sweet spot every time. If I start toeing too much then I know I'm messing up my posture and grip. Most of my practice when figuring out new stuff is like 50-70% effort swings and they still go far enough to be playable since I'm getting over 1.4 smash factor on them. And I know where they're coming from, it took me so much time and effort to stop my tendency of just trying to hit the ball harder and harder after I was toeing too much. The toe hit feels so bad it makes you annoyed then you want to punish the ball for it, so you increase your grip pressure, muscle it then suddenly toe hits feel good again since you're not feeling anything

Good news? I had a phenomenal day lag putting. I never had a second putt longer than 3 feet, and most within a foot. Bad news? From 6' plus, they were all lag putts. I had a few 20+ footers just miss. I had a bunch of 7'/8' putts just miss. I had good birdie looks over and over, and nothing dropped. Not bad putts, just never actually falling in the hole. Maddening. The difference between a really good score and an average score. Oh, and note for Max, one of the guys in our four ball: if you're the shortest golfer, you should really try not to also be the slowest golfer. So, if we're waiting for you to hit, maybe don't take a couple of minutes to get the old ball retriever out, especially when your ball is in play, not in the water.

A couple of weeks ago, I made a change to my driver by committing to a longer backswing and a bigger shoulder turn. I had multiple practices and rounds on the simulator where I was hitting the best drives of my life. Consistent draws with a low-spin penetrating ball flight with the strikes coming off the center of the face or maybe the tow. After a busy week and some time spent on short game stuff, I am now completely unable to hit my driver. Spent a half hour humping the golf ball and hitting 90% of my shots off the heel. No idea what I’m doing differently or why the swing has regressed so dramatically. Unbelievably frustrating.

I’m working my way through Ben Hogan’s Five Lessons, and realised the reason that I’m not getting distance and speed is because I’m not flicking or whipping my wrist at the last minute. Started doing this and added about 30 yards to each shot, I’m still a short hitter. But really feel like it’s going to help my game. I’m still getting a launch angle of 22 degrees with my driver, but it’s going 180 yards, so if I work on the face angle now I should really be seeing some improvement. Also, Ben Hogan has swag. Think I’m going to rock a flat cap and pale hues this summer.

Yeah I think ideally that’s never a conscious thought so much as a natural byproduct of getting your body turning through impact. But I guess so are all of our dumb swing thoughts lol
|
|

my coach first taught me how to intentionally whip it with wrist rotation then taught me how to let that happen naturally with body rotation along the proper swing path. I think you benefit from knowing it's a thing that has to happen on your swing but then take the club manipulation out of the equation. Once I learned what the club has to do I could see that I was actually preventing the club from releasing due to a bad grip, excessive tension, grip pressure, bad swing path, lack of confidence and a thousand other things in the first place. I think the only constant I've noticed in my progress so far is that I always feel that I'm one fix away from having a good, consistent swing but then I see how many little things I've been fixing along the way. If someone asks me how I fixed my over the top swing I can't even trace it back to one specific thing but you always see swing advice on youtube saying that one weird ol' trick will solve all your swing issues at once

I got a VoiceCaddie TL1 on a screaming deal for just over $200 and I love it, but I wouldn’t pay the $350 list price for it. It does have waaaaay better optics and the pin detection is basically automatic vs the old $60 Amazon special that I had and lost, but even the cheapo ones gave good distances, just wasn’t a nice to use.

It works just fine and it's cheap enough that I don't feel bad when I inevitably leave it attached to the golf cart. It's getting harder and harder to find tee times in my area (at least tee times that are early enough to finish before sundown). I had a look at my stats for last year and I only managed to get in 13 rounds for the entire golf season (March - October) simply because that was all I could get. So this year I'm looking into joining a private club. There is one about 20 mins away that is within my budget and they offer a service where they store your bag and cart so all you have to do is rock up and all your poo poo's out front and ready to go. If I do it, it means I have to play at least 1 round a week, every week, rain or shine to justify the cost to myself but it also means I'm playing at least 32 rounds per season. I'm trying to line up a tour of the facility and get some more details on the membership itself and I want to see what the vibe is like from the other members. It's not a super exclusive club, but if everyone else there is going to be snobby rich fucks I'll probably bail out. Fingers crossed though that people are chill.

Muni golf in and around the NC triad is an embarrassment of riches. I live on a private course and won't consider joining because of initiation fees and monthly dues being way more than I spend on golf at an array of munis and public courses. Good luck on your club tour, and be sure to ask about assessments as well as any capital improvement plans (that might take some or all of the course offline in the near to mid future). Edit: If I lived on The Cardinal I'd join that one, as the fees are reasonable and it's a challenging Pete Dye course, but clubs like that (which are "just" golf and not the whole CC lifestyle thing) are rare around here. Played a round with my cousins today and had the best round I've ever played. Felt like a good one was coming since I shot a PB 80 in the sim yesterday and my form translated a bit to the course. Made my first ever birdie on a proper full sized course. 125m par 3 (guarded by 2 8 ft deep bunkers), dropped it to 6 feet like a dart and centered the cup on the putt. Made myself look way, way more competent than I actually am. No idea what the scores were because we were playing team scramble match play, but had the most fun I've had in ages and hit some genuinely good shots. First time I feel like stuff I've been doing in the sim has been translating a bit to the course.

![]() It’s light enough for 6am rounds now lads. This will be my life for the next 6 months. Managed to get 10 holes in before work today. Golf was bad, but getting out on the course was good. A great tip for getting my weight correct is to place the club head where I want impact with the ground to be. Then get the feel, then move it so the ball is then in the way. Seems to work for me. I also hit GIR on both par 3’s, which is very exciting for me. I’ve still got my fade, and I really need to work on that.

Have a goal to buy no more golf clubs in 2025, and to sell down to a max of "two sets" to try and fund at least part of an HMT add-on for my gc2. Made a big ol for sale post on WRX, not sure if its an infraction to cross post a link, but now that I've (mostly) settled on the clubs I'm playing, its time to divest of the stuff that was not a good fit for me.

and one day, pigs shall fly. I too have to sell some extra clubs this year. There's only 2 things I'm kind of curious about - a lie angle balanced putter of some description - maybe LAB or maybe the new bettinardi blade like putters. Also kind of interested in a fitted driver, though the priority on that has decreased a little since I finally feel like the one I have is starting to get properly comfortable for me.
