The real tragedy is that Angel Cabrera is going to take someone's spot this year.

Good news is that a buddy got Friday tickets and he invited me to go with him. :smug:

It's getting harder and harder to find tee times in my area (at least tee times that are early enough to finish before sundown). I had a look at my stats for last year and I only managed to get in 13 rounds for the entire golf season (March - October) simply because that was all I could get. So this year I'm looking into joining a private club. There is one about 20 mins away that is within my budget and they offer a service where they store your bag and cart so all you have to do is rock up and all your poo poo's out front and ready to go. If I do it, it means I have to play at least 1 round a week, every week, rain or shine to justify the cost to myself but it also means I'm playing at least 32 rounds per season. I'm trying to line up a tour of the facility and get some more details on the membership itself and I want to see what the vibe is like from the other members. It's not a super exclusive club, but if everyone else there is going to be snobby rich fucks I'll probably bail out. Fingers crossed though that people are chill.

Update: I went to have a tour of the facilities and had dinner at the clubhouse with the family. The course is beautiful and maintained at a level way above the usual cornfields of the local muni's and public courses. Lots of families and kids running around and playing with each other. The sales rep said their membership was dropping because it was primarily seniors and they're ramping up their junior golf leagues and academy in an attempt to swing the membership base younger (which is why people like myself are able to afford it now). My daughter (8) saw all of the kids running around and has now shown an interest in wanting to play (membership is free if you're under 18). I didn't get a chance to actually play the course or talk to many of the other members, but the ones I did talk to seemed pretty chill and the GPS map on 18 birdies looks moderately difficult.

All in all the food was good, the people seemed chill, and now my daughter is showing an interest in the sport. I signed the membership application yesterday and am now waiting on getting our ID's made, and everything registered.

I guess I'll be playing a shitload more golf in the future.

I'm huge in Japan
We do a lot of things to combat sandbagging in our club tournaments (i.e. we have a separate Club Index calculation that only uses tournament scores and if that is lower than your actual Current Index you play to that, ...etc.), but it's always fun when you run into the reverse sandbaggers. For example, we have two guys in our club who are twin brothers. They've both had a GHIN index of around +1 for years and neither one has ever broken 80 in a club tournament, but all of the non-tournament scores they post are like 67s at random courses in rounds they're playing together with their buddies or whatever. It's been a running joke amongst the club for a while, but it's harmless since they never win anything. Anyway...

A new guy joined the club recently who caught our attention because he came in with a +4.1 current index, which is pretty impressive. He played in his first tournament yesterday.

We played from the blues yesterday (MUCH easier course than from the blacks) and new members always get put with other players in similar handicap ranges, so he played with me, another guy who's a +1.5 and our fourth is a 67 year old scratch index who just shot 66 against me in our fourball playoffs :argh:

New guy tops his drive badly on the first tee - no big deal, probably some nerves playing in his first tournament in a new club with new people. Takes him 3 more shots to get to the green and then rolls his first putt 10' past the hole from about 20' and makes a triple. Next hole he tops his drive again, followed by three more shots to get to the green and a 2-putt for double. At this point we're paying a little more attention to his swing and it's pretty clear that this is not the swing of a competent golfer, let alone someone who's supposed to be a +4. I know a lot of very good golfers with some funky swings, but they all are getting into a recognizable position at impact. This is not that.

We tried to keep things light with him and joke about how we all played like poo poo in our first tournament, but it didn't do much to help. He ended up being +15 after 8 holes and walked off without saying anything to the rest of us.

After the round, I checked his GHIN and his last 10 scores at our course that he'd posted from the black tees were:
72 / 75 / 71 / 66 / 69 / 67 / 68 / 78 / 68

Very strange!

That’s my dad in a nutshell. Doesn’t count drops or when he kicks his ball into a better spot, so he’s a single digit handicap. Until he plays with me and I keep score and he gives up before we finish the front 9 and he’s 15 over.

Most people lie in the wrong direction about their scores. Of course, most people never need a handicap, so it's all ego stroking.

So many players don't count rehits, or foot wedges or give themselves putts "in the leather" that they're likely 50% shooters on. As long as they move it along, and they're having a good time, I'll encourage that.

Got hit into two or three times over nine holes today. Walking off the seventh green, we hear “fore!” and then a ball flies two feet by the head of one of the guys in my group.

Then on nine, we hear “fore!” again while walking off the green. I hear a *thump* and see someone landed a ball about ten feet off the back of the green. Maybe ten yards over us.

I think they hit into us while we were approaching the green on nine as well, but never saw the ball or heard anyone call out. I just heard a “thump” nearby.

Honestly I was just so weirded out/confused by it to react. I thought about teeing up the ball on the green on 9, but by that point it was too late. The other guys I was grouped with were playing 18. Hopefully nothing more came of it.

Our league bylaws have that kind of stuff built in. Basically "don't be a dick" is the general rule. If you are playing an amazing round, everyone is going to hold you to earning it. If you are shooting a 50, everyone encourages making the best out of your next shot. Its a great environment.

We had some dudes get kicked out of my indoor league for extreme sandbagging. We set handicaps in the first 3 weeks, and then the next 9 weeks are competition. These guys were rolling with 6 shots on 9 holes and turning in a gross 5 under for a total of -12 to -14 every week on 9 holes.

Once I’ve figured that out I’ll need to work on my course strategy and layup distance.

Once I’ve done that I’ll sort my driving out, ad infinitum.

Fallen Rib
Played St George, UT courses last week. 10/10 golf overall.

Black Desert is incredible. Definitely pricey ($350 for the round and each group has a forecaddie so you've gotta tip them out too). It's the third Expensive with a capital E round I've played (Harbour Town and Red Sky being the other two), and it was the best experience of those. Really cool scenery, red cliffs and mountains in the background, the course winds through fields of black lava rocks with (obviously) really pure fairways and greens. They're playing an LPGA event there next weekend so it the conditions were approaching perfect, and while the rough wasn't quite as long as it'll be for the tourney it was still pretty nasty, especially on touchy greenside shots. The course design was really cool - tee shots were generally wide enough that you weren't terrified of losing a ball (and I got at least one really lucky bounce off a lava rock back into the middle of the fairway), but there were definitely good and bad spots to be in for your approaches. Big undulations on the greens, one of the par 3's has a bunker right in the middle of the green which was pretty neat. There's a 19th hole, just a little shot over an artificial lagoon which is pretty cool, and one of the guys in my group holed his shot which was a fun way to end the round.

The price does include all the food and non-alcoholic drinks you want, the breakfast sandwich was good and the tacos + churros on the turn were great. They also give you a really nice bag tag with a complimentary custom engraving.

Copper Rock is a newer course, nestled up against a big cliff with a bunch of expensive looking new houses around it. They're hosting an Epson Tour event in two weeks so again, it was in really good condition. Extremely fun layout with some absolutely massive greens (at least two of them were 70+ yards front to back) - it's a course I would probably try to play alot if I lived out there. The scenery was good but not on the level of Black Desert or Sand Hollow, but just a really fun course. They did use gas carts which seemed weird for a newer course but that's just a small knock against em.

Sand Hollow was probably my least favorite course from a strictly golf standpoint, but only because the other two were so good. That said it was still a 9/10 experience, the scenery is absolutely incredible, and 12 thru 16 is probably the coolest five hole stretch I'll ever play. They're famous so everyone's probably seen pictures (look it up if you haven't), they're literally on a cliff. I had chills when I hit my tee shot on 12, and 16 is maybe the coolest par 3 I've ever played, it has like six different spots they can tuck tee boxes in, above, or between rock formations. It seemed like they have been doing some work on the turf, most of the grass was in good shape but there were quite a few spots where you could tell it had been recently resodded, and overall the hole designs weren't as memorable as the other two courses, but it's still amazing and I'll definitely make it a point to play it again when I'm back out there.

Anyway go golf in St George, and then go to Zion

I’ll repeat something I’ve said at least a couple of times in this thread before: Wednesday is easily the best day to attend the Masters if you ever get the opportunity.

Everyone’s out on the course getting in their last practice round and you’re allowed to bring a camera. Then you have the Par 3, which is insanely fun to watch and on a part of the property you don’t get access to any other day.

Being there on Sunday might barely edge it out in overall coolness, but I’d take Wed over any other tournament day if given the choice.

I went to Sunday at Oakmont the last time and I'd take Wednesday over anything. I imagine its way more laid back and you actually can enjoy the course and the atmosphere. We ended up listening to it on the radio on the drive back instead of sticking around (mind you it was 95 degrees and there was nooooooo shade).

Went to the US Womens Open at Lancaster Country Club last year (Saturday?) and that was an all around superior experience (minus the store). Made watching the final round on Sunday way better because you had a 3D image in your head of the course contours.

Ok, after my brand new glove was stained by my cracked grips on the first use I think a regrip is way overdue. Gonna try regripping them myself, bought a table clamp, the regripping kit and a bunch of tour velvet 360 grips because I dont want to think about alignment when gripping these. Lets see how it goes, I was going to regrip these standards to midsize at some point and they came on the used clubs. Finally I'll get to use new grips for the first time ever

false alarm, just cancelled my orders. the nearby pro shop gave me a quote for regripping and reattaching my 50 degree clubhead that was 20 dollars lower than buying all the regripping equipment. Since I was going there anyway for the clubhead, this project can wait for another day. I might even go for the tour velvet aligns now since a pro is doing it

Tape is firmer than grip rubber, midsize and oversize grips can be mushy. Generally compressed air is only for the type of grips made by Star and Pure (rip), but making the size of the shaft big enough to make a standard grip midsize will also create enough tension to hold the grip in place without the solvent/glue. Compressed air rules because if you want to swap grips, because you are a tinkerer, it becomes super easy.

Cougin it. You love to see it.

A guy I work with got into golf a couple of years ago and got some hand me downs and decided to regrip all of them. He did a baller job so I asked him to do mine if he had the time so he could get more practice (obviously I paid him materials plus time). Did a baller job on those too.
