I only kinda-sorta-not really follow college golf here in the states, so I knew who Matthew Wolff was and I had heard he had a weird swing. Now that I'm seeing him tearing it up in Minn. this week, though, wow. That's a wild rear end swing.

Today was the weirdest scramble I think I've ever played. I played really well, I think I probably would've shot low-80s on my own ball, but I was ultimately almost useless outside of three 10-15 foot putts. Every other time I hit a good shot someone in my group got it inside of me. On back to back 175ish yard par 3s I hit it to within 10 feet only to have one guy hit it to probably a foot and then my dad hit it to like four feet. It was weirdly frustrating.

I’m 100% sure that as my dad has lost yards on his driver and irons to old age and two reconstructed knees he has gained all of that back in the ability to punch balls to two feet from under any tree and casually stroke 25 foot double-breakers, so he’s actually way more frustrating to play against.

Failing that he’ll usually have a putt for first in that’s of a reasonable distance. I’ve paid him way more quarters in my 30s than I ever did in my teens when I was a worse golfer.

Ugh. It's bad enough that it's such an epidemic on tour, but worse when that poo poo filters down to people in my golf league or randos I get paired up with on weekends. It's awful. God drat people struggling to break 100 insisting on the flag being put back in the cup for 2 ft putts.

I think that’s completely normal as a new golfer but it’s probably the main reason you feel like you’re losing distance. That follow through is usually a high push and/or fade for right handlers. Staying down and letting the loft of the club do its thing takes awhile to learn but it’s worth focusing on.

When my chipping confidence is down I go in the back yard and just swing the club at the ground, not even hitting a ball. I’m looking for the right kind of thump that lets me know I’m letting the bounce do it’s thing and there’s no negative reinforcement for the ball not going where I want it to.

Not sure how many people here are fans of No Laying Up, but if you aren't, now's a pretty good series to get in with the launch of their newest season of their extended golf vlog, Tourist Sauce, this time in Ireland. They're joined at some point by Tom Coyne, author of the great golf book A Course Called Ireland, which really everyone should read if you like golf.These are always a lot of fun with plenty of drone porn, local golf interviews and insight, and fun golf antics. Also my new MP20's are supposedly somewhere on the delivery truck and I can't wait to hit them, though sadly it'll probably have to wait mostly until next year. Probably like most people here I am of the perfect age that watching Tiger go full on Tiger like this is increasingly nostalgiac in a way that little else is. When he tapped in for the Masters wIn last year my daughter asked why I just broke down crying and I couldn’t really explain. So any time I get to watch this it’s a blessing.

Presidents' Cup has been pretty solid golf so far if you can ignore the absurd number of commercials. That last bunker shot by Tiger was nuts. I don't even really know how to tell when to criticize a captain. I guess if you don't try varying up partners or something? At some point people that aren't Tiger need to hit some irons or at least make some putts. JT has spent two days looking like me playing with my scratch friend, it's embarrassing.

Yeah the tour needs to become way less PR managed. poo poo like taking down the video of Rahm blowing up his caddy after trying to hit a 100 yard roping hook out of the trap last year. That was gold and it just vanished because everyone has to remain a professional class act at all times.

Anyone else listen to the NLU podcast? This episode with Peter Kostis from yesterday is something amazing. Just non-stop annihilation of the tour and CBS for their coverage. “I don’t think anyone at the tour or CBS gives a rat’s rear end about the viewer experience” might not even be a top-10 most critical sentence. I’m sure there’s some bitterness there and he talks about that a bit but it’s not he’s saying stuff that tons of people haven’t said for years now.
