Nonsensical Space Powers, Activate! Form of Friendship!

Darth Walrus posted:

I doubt our new additions to the cast are (officially) paying for the sins of their ancestors - their outfits, names, and appearance all suggest they're descendants of the original Yattermen, Gan-chan and Ai-chan. Even the guy's thing with the die is a nod to the Yattermen's die-shaped robot companion, Omotchama.

Well, I wasn't meaning just them, but the other people we saw too. Ie, was your grandfather a criminal? To the wasteland with you!

But yeah, those sorts of allusions you mention are why I think Galina might know something, at least vaguely, on what went wrong. There's enough about the second usage of the die, since we don't hear his thoughts, that I think it may not have been about whether or not he and Alouette could tag along.

Yeah, so far this is definitely my favorite new show of this season. I just love the fact that the Donburo gang just manages to still keep that essence of being the quirky villain team and still be the main characters, down to the fact that they don't necessarily have to win, they just have to get away to mess with the "heroes" another day.

It this could be closer to Tekkaman Blade than Gatchaman Crowds in terms of remake of Tatsunoko show that is somewhat more serious that'd be much appreciated.

I-I just have something in my eyes, I swear.

Jesus loving Christ, that's just a depressing ending to the episode. I mean, sure, reinforcing the Yattermen as a threat, but drat...

This show is depressing as gently caress. Like, it's goofy about 75% of the time and then it hits you in the gut to remind you how hosed up everything has become.

It's telling how completely oppressive Yatter Kingdom is when the four other guys being escorted to hard labour didn't even think of running away from being literally worked to bones. Or even attacking and overpowering a half-broken robot. If that was a Nazi, they'd sure as poo poo bash its skull in and make a run for it.

God this episode was perfect. I hope they keep this formula of humor and depressing reality, the animation quality sticking around would be great too. General Goro's voice seemed familiar, anybody know who it was?

VVV: Thanks! His yell tipped me off, but I wasn't sure if it was just me/couldn't find a credit for it.

New episode is out. To continue the notion of villain schemes from a protagonist perspective, the gang engage in more moneymaking schemes.

Too bad everybody is dirt poor in the Yatter Kingdom.

This one certainly felt more... all over the place than previous episodes. Like, not the series doesn't vary in tone a lot, but the transition between the comedy and such felt more noticeable this time around, particularly whenever Takeshi got on screen (sometimes it worked, sometimes it didn't).

If there was a key development this episode, it was that the Doronbow have now exposed themselves before an audience, rather than a select few. People might actually know who they are in future.

GROSS BOY

On a different topic, does anyone else get really hyped over how the show displays the episode's title at the start of the OP? I don't know why, but that tiny thing is so cool for me.

It was a silly-rear end episode but I enjoyed it. Some bit of levity was probably needed at some point, though it jumping back to the parody world of the original Yatterman where every bit character is kind of weird and crazy was a bit off-putting. I just like to imagine as the Doronjo gang's influence spreads, more of the original crazy silliness starts creeping back into this depressing world. Didn't actually expect the Doronjo gang to win in a straight-up fight though, though I guess they technically lost by not keeping the reward.

Nah, they're trying to play hero, so that was a win too. Their Team Rocket moment came when the general caught up with them, though even then, the fact that they were leading him away means reduced odds on the village suffering reprisal attacks.

It wasn't an amazing episode but I felt like it helped cut the depressing dictatorship with an absurd festival/one-off characters. It would be nice to see more like it in the future, maybe just more coherent than this was. More fights need a Whispering Reporter narration too.

Apparently Whispering Reporter is from a different show, Yattodetaman, which is also part of the Time Bokan series that Yatterman is in. Takeshi might be a reference to the main character from Hurrican Polymar, which is another Tatsunoko show.

I'm surprised the tournament wasn't just a plot by the Yatter Wan to find the strongest air slaves and send them to the power plant.

Are you kidding me? We need a light hearted episode. Make a depressing world a neverending cavalcade of horrors and you just stop caring about trying to change the status quo. The villagers do have a tiny amount of power and will, and Doronjo has planted the seeds of rebellion and hope.

That's how I feel about the ep too. I'm just genuinely surprised the Yatterplan seemed to just be to humiliate the villagers with their OP fightbots instead of something more sinister.

My only issue is that this episode didnt really advance the story itself. It was entirely filler, but it was enjoyable none the less. Also the series is following a "Depressing but hopeful episode, entirely depressing...." episode scheme so next one will probably be incredibly depressing to balance this one out.

Darth Walrus

It did advance the plot, though? It's Doronbo's first big, public win, their debut as the anti-Yatterman resistance. That's fairly important.

It didnt introduce any new lasting characters and it was about as much as a victory as the other matches. Which is they blow poo poo up and eventually are back on the run. Compare it to EP 1-4, not nearly as eventful.

I wonder whether Elephantus asked for his leather getup or if it was all Galina. It would be really cute to see new outfits every episode though, just as a semi-gag.

Well, if the writers are smart then this episode is supposed to be our first hint that the people of the Yatter Kingdom aren't so thoroughly oppressed that nobody even thinks about fighting back. If that's the case then who knows, maybe Takeshi's gonna' show up again later as part of the kakumeidan.
