I just adopted a Leopard Gecko, and this is my first reptile. (technically he arrives tomorrow)

He comes with everything, but the sanctuary is throwing in a UVB bulb as well for some added care.

Because of that, I have a husbandry question:

Do I dust his food with calcium without D3, or is it safe to do a multivitamin dusting on his food? I have seen conflicting info on the internet about this.

Leopard geckos are nocturnal. They don't need UVB lights.

It was provided by the reptile rescue sanctuary themselves.

I just got my Leopard Gecko and was looking at this online:
https://dubiaroaches.com/products/adult-leopard-gecko-variety-pack?variant=23914648453

50 Large Dubia ($14)
100 Large NutriGrubs ($5)
6 Large Hornworms ($5.95)
25 Giant Mealworms ($3)

I know how to store mealworms, but how should I store the rest of these?

My L.Gecko just shed the other day, and right now he's splooting in his moist hide and it looks like he finished his shed. I peeked in the entrance and he's got some shed on his fingers.

He also pooped recently which makes me happy, ate some of the calcium I put out, and drank some water, but I now have a question:

I want to pick him up, swap out his newspaper with reptile carpet, and soak him for a bit so I can clean his shed of his toes, but he pretty much just hangs out in his humid hide now.

I got him two saturdays ago, coming up on a third, and don't want to stress him out too much. What's the best way to handle this? I haven't had the chance to handle him since I got him.

Some people say they just pick up the hide and then pick him up but that seems like it might stress him out.

I'm not like, a lizard scientist, but I would think picking him up directly would be less stressful in the long term than picking up the entire hide, since it might damage his association with it as a "safe place" to see it completely uprooted more than being plucked out of it.

I just picked the hide up because he wasn't leaving the hide, and gently picked him up and put him in the thing here. He didn't like me touching his toes with a qtip but at least he got a soak so he can try doing it himself.

Cut off their heads/them into pieces if you’re worried. The issue I’ve often heard about is that once a worm- and its jaws- get to be a certain size they can actually inflict a nasty enough bite on your animal. I’ve heard of lizards getting mouth and throat injuries.

There were a bunch of hornworms at petsmart and holy poo poo they're huge. I have a 5y Leo and even those look too big for him.

Maybe I should get a beardie in the future. I like my leopard gecko but IDK if you can put them next to each other.

also in case anyone cares, petco/petsmart are "essential" open retail chains right now for food.

I still don't like actually touching mealworms directly, but think it's whatever.

I wouldn't probably mind like an ant farm, just not.....ants in my house.

Because it's been warming up ants have been trying to come in no matter how clean I am and I swear to god I will burn their loving house down. Which I wont, because technically that's mine but man am I upset about that lol.

I'm going to call a vet in the morning but I need an opinion tonight, I just got home and noticed my leopard gecko possibly vomited blood? I guess?

I don't see he's missing digits, I don't see he's got bite marks on his surface area or tail or anything

But there was a decent amount of blood in his water dish and, kind of all over the cage really, like, specks of blood. I don't think he bled from pooping too hard, but it does seem like he had a rather large bowel movement which is new?

I fed him about a week ago and he's about 5 years old. Could he have just pushed too hard? he has fresh water

The only thing I can think of is the humidity has been too high in my apartment but I'm getting a dehumidifier soon (next week) and the air conditioning is running to try and mitigate it.

Excess humidity shouldn't make your lizard pass blood. If there's no visible blood or injury on the animal's body and it looks like they were dripping blood then yeah it likely came from their mouth or cloaca/butt. Gonna have to talk to a vet about that ASAP. Right now the best thing you can do is observe for any behavioral changes or signs and really try to figure out where the blood came/is coming from.

Blood does NOT seem to be butt blood related, I took him out and he make kind of like a retching open mouth thing and then shook his head back and forth and sprayed blood everywhere. He's walking around, though he seems tired, understandably

I've called a few places and my closest bet is 2 1/2 hours away in boston so that sucks.

Edit: drove to Angell and brought him in. Really disappointed they didn't take him in immediately and wasted time getting me checked in first

Edit2: gently caress. That is all. gently caress.

How's your little dude? :(

The vet said it was either cancer, an ulcer, or something wrong with his GI tract. He wasn't the specialist per se, but it was like 5am and the reptile specialist "team" weren't going to be in until 8am and he gave me some options, such as saying it would be $1400-2600 for 3-5 days of hospitalization for them to figure out what was going wrong, and even then the outlook wasn't good. He had fluid in his stomach and they did an ultrasound I think.

I decided to have him put down because it sounded like even if I had tried I wouldn't have been able to help him. Shortly after he passed before they could do anything.

I was only away for a few hours, he looked fine before I left, and I came back and he was having blood pooling in his mouth and he'd shake his head to get rid of it, he ate a week ago and pooped recently too.

I told the vet and the reptile sanctuary everything and they said I didn't do anything wrong, just, he was likely hiding his symptoms until it was too late and there's nothing I could have done about it.

This month has been absolutely terrible for me, world issues aside.

Does anyone have a Beardie in a studio apartment? (like, 370 sq ft two stories)

If so.....how bad does their poop smell :itoilet:

I'm debating getting one but I keep hearing it's stinky.

Speaking as someone who had a breeding colony of beardies, but also has kept various lizards and mammals, cat poo poo smells the worst. Beardies, iirc, might have one or two shits every few days but it's easy to pick and clean up.

I used to have a cat with the ex and her poo poo didn't stink that bad.

In the Before Times, it was easy to have a ton of hand sanitizer around, and that will make almost any bite release asap.

There are tons of hand sanitizer in stores, I think everyone has already stocked up. I have like, two bottles in my car and at home. Probably won't have to buy more for a year.
