SWORD OF SMATTAS. CAN YOU NOT HEAR A WORLD CRY OUT FOR JUSTICE? WHEN WILL YOU DELIVER IT?
Yam Slacker
Morgan Datametrics departmental private log

Well, we're here, which is an amazing achievement in and of itself. Mankind's first venture to an extrasolar world, and we are extremely fortunate. Terran crops can grow here, there's an atmosphere, liquid water, livable temperature ranges. Still getting used to the gravity, though. It's close enough to Earth to be viable, but there's an uncanny valley effect, it just feels off. Hopefully that will fade in time, or at least our children will get used to it.

So, now what? For all we know, we are all that remains of humanity. So, we act like it. Use what tools we have to make better tools. Use what knowledge we have to gain a better understanding. I'm glad for the societal triage of the Compromise: A society shorn of isolationists, fundamentalists, radical greens, excessive authoritarians and bureaucrats has the space and freedom to truly grow and flourish. I do hope we can make contact with the Scientist pod, though: Zakharov and his team worked marvels to get us here, and if I didn't respect those with the nous to cut through the nonsense and do what needs to be done, I wouldn't have signed up with Morgan.

That's what it boils down to. Getting stuff done, plain and simple. Cut the Gordian knot. So, here at Morgan Datametrics, the stuff we get done is research, applied science to produce tangible results. We must examine the planet's resources and our own to see what we can discover, and build upon the foundation we have of the human learning that got us here. The Boss has diverted considerable resources to our labs: We won't disappoint him. We're in this for the long haul, but remember, always, that we need to come up with practical solutions, as much and as often as possible.

CEO Morgan,
Firstly, I have to say that introducing competing research labs was a masterstroke, a marketplace of knowledge where we need to remain efficient and focused. The stuff Dr. Kimberley's people produced on the local ecosystem was revolutionary, although I have high hopes my own company will soon have a similar breakthrough to showcase.

Onto other matters. Whilst I am concerned about Dr. Skye's unorthodox perspective (I refuse to call her 'Lady', we didn't travel four light years just to re-institute feudalism!) She has successfully established another human outpost beside our own, which given what we now know about the native wildlife, was by no means guaranteed. I'm wondering if we could start up a quid pro quo exchange of ideas and technology? We don't buy into their exceedingly conservative and retrograde platform, they don't buy into our own liberal values, but we could both benefit from each other's knowledge. Have we considered a technology trade with them?

Finally, I've been looking over the proposal from the Tellus collective. On the whole, their business plan is sound, growth projections are good, I'd be willing to invest in their venture, maybe even establish a branch lab there if it seems viable.

AJ Kusisitiza, Coordinator, Kusisitiza Datametrics.

I think we may have something. Building on our rediscovered networking capability and our current manufacturing ground work, we may yet be able to substantially increase our industrial capabilities through a level of automation undreamed of even on Old Earth. It's going to take a while to get all the bugs out, but the benefits are potentially massive. Remote resource-gathering operations, living space optimisation, potentially making everyone's lives richer and more productive. Ambitious, certainly, but I believe all this is in our reach in relatively short order.

Kusisitiza Datametrics will be doubling down on this line of development, so any and all of our unutilised lab space is up for rental to assist your own endeavours at reasonable rates. Let me know if you need to tap into the extra capability, and we'll see if we can arrange something. But please, no live mindworm research.

The logistics behind an undersea base pose some truly fascinating problems. Perhaps some kind of amphibious supply unit? We'd need to make our standard living modules water-tight and pressure-capable, ensure our colonising resources are equipped for aquatic deployment, to say nothing of water-based terraformers. Defence from seaward threats would give even Marcus Li conniptions! A most worthy endeavour, we would be happy to assist with making Project Xochimilco a reality.

My fellow colleagues and competitors, our recent work has uncovered a possibility for greatly improved energy storage and distribution which will form a much-needed cornerstone of our automation project. Subject: Phase one of Kusistiza Datametrics' enhancement program is complete

Esteemed colleagues and competitors, I am proud to announce the rollout of the new KD energy distribution hubs, the very latest in efficient storage and transfer of the energy upon which our colony is built. Already we are reaping the benefits of their entry into the marketplace, but perhaps their greatest strength would be in creating centralised storage and distribution nexi, 'Energy Banks', if you will, which could enhance our energy-based economy to a whole new level of efficiency.

Now, onto phase two. Here at Kusistiza Datametrics we have long believed that progress massively enhances quality of life, and thus we will continue to build fo(u)r the future. Why be happy with the lesser pleasures of today when tomorrow will bring ever greater wonders? Thus, to better bring about the advancements I have mentioned in my earlier missives, I advise each of you, and officially endorse, a proportionate distribution of Labs 5, Energy 4, Psych 1. A free market requires constant consumption, which requires constant new product, which requires constant innovation. Our prototype remote resource gatherers, for example, would be an exponential game changer once we have them perfected and released to the market. We cannot be satisfied with less, and cannot sit on our laurels, and we cannot fob off our customers with yesterday's product because tomorrow's product was underinvested.

Colleagues,
I am sending this message out to those who have dedicated the most effort towards mastering the potentially hazardous native life of our new planet. I will be brief: Our remote resource gatherers need to be fully and completely native-proofed, to the best of our abilities. I am turning to you for help, properly renumerated as a matter of course, as to how to achieve this. The benefits to the future of our colony, and in some cases your own ventures, promise to be massive, but as HCS Carson's demonstration ably proved, that doesn't help if the promise of incredibly efficient resource gathering becomes so much worm food. Let's solve these problems.

Subject: Remote Resource Gatherer prototypes: Field testing volunteers needed.

Colleagues,

After many years of iterative development, and with a minimum half a decade if we're lucky before public release, our remote resource gatherers are sufficiently advanced for me to permit and authorize field testing out in the xenofungal growths. This will be potentially hazardous to the point of life-threatening, but I guarantee you that our colony's foremost experts on native life have been consulted at length to ensure the risks are minimised. We now need to put in the hard graft here to see that those risks are eliminated, as near as we can manage.

For those unfamiliar with the project, the basic chassis of the RRGs is similar to that of the most popular Former vehicles, and we may invest in licensing the blueprints to ensure cross-compatibility of parts for the commercial model. The resource gathering and transportation module, including the crew seating for the crewed versions, will be protected by a geodesic sphere of plasma-steel, reinforced by lead shielding. You will be as safe as we can design for at this time, and we will be improving that design as we go on.

This project is critical to our future, both as a company and as a colony. We've been working towards this for years: Let's take it home and make it perfect.

Additionally, the resource allocation votes are coming up. You are, of course, free to choose the path that you deem most profitable, but as a company, I believe that Build 4 Labs 4 Econ 3 Psych 3 would be the most beneficial for us.

Things to bear in mind about the 'dunk':

*Your body is essentially remade on a cellular level, going from the verge of senescence to the end of adolescence. The saying, 'Youth is wasted on the young'? It no longer has relevance. Youth is now the provenance of the inexperienced, and the successful.

*Loved ones. If you can book a session at a similar time to your spouse, it will save a lot of heartache. If your spouse chooses not to take the treatment... accept their choice. I strongly suggest the both of you seek counselling in this instance. We have some of the finest psych specialists in the world, make use of them.

*With youth comes the need to be careful. Hormones have been mentioned by other posters, bear in mind why that is and act accordingly. If your grandkids end up with some brand new aunts and uncles, make sure it isn't by accident.

*Recog software. Fingerprints are still good, voice-ident can struggle, retinal scans are generally okay. Make sure you have a fallback in case something goes awry.

*Judging by appearance just got a lot harder. That callow youth might have been born on Earth. There's something in the eyes, the weight of years, that remains even after the treatment, but it's hard to describe, almost uncanny valley, wise eyes in a young face. This has security implications: Corporate espionage with old vets going for intern positions. The limits of the possible are now much broader.

Personal Log, AJ Kusisitiza, Coordinator, Kusisitiza Datametrics

It's true. It's actually true. Those maniacs in South Pholus have actually done it. They weaponised the mind worms. They literally saw what those... things... did to human beings, literally and figuratively burrowing into their minds, a death filled with unimaginable horror and pain, no, scratch that, all too imaginable, and they thought, 'That's useful, let's use it against our fellow human beings, let's deliberately inflict this pain and misery and suffering and horror upon our fellow sentients from Earth'.

We cannot coexist with people whose minds and morality are that warped, willing to stoop to such horrific atrocities. The Spartans were right, the diplomat must have been telling the truth about it being used against them. We're better off out of their conflict, and neither of them in their right mind would want a two front war, but if it came down to it, if it really became impossible to avoid, I'd stick with the humans against those who would abuse the very world they revere into becoming a truly horrific alien weapon for them.

Our grand project is so near to completion, but we're going to need more backing to commit our lab resources to the final push. Time to glad-hand my peers and see if I can get them to back Build 4, Economy 3, Labs 4, Psych 3. The benefits of our industrial automation program making it to public release would be massive, I only hope we can get people to see that.

Viewpoint pans in on a globe of Chiron, the detail resolution is mediocre at best. There are huge swathes of Terra Incognita.

"This is Chiron. Our planet, our home. But look at it: We know so very little about it!"

Viewpoint zooms in through the cloud layer, North Pholus a shining jewel between drab greens to the south and gunmetal grey on the mountain.

"We've established ourselves here as a beacon of sane humanity, with a free and democratic society amongst squabbling autocracies. Should this be the only place where that which is good in humanity is allowed to flourish unfettered?"

Another zoom, on the docks at Morgan's Landing. Gleaming hydrofoils skim the surface, sailing outwards across Keynes Bay in an ever-widening fan.

"Thanks to our hardworking industries and talented R&D companies, we lead the world in technological innovation. We have the means to go out and fill in the blanks. Do we have the will?"

Fade out to the voting slip.

"On Democracy Day, cast your vote for the Expansionist Party. The future of our world is in your hands."

The Cavalry arrives: Along a brand-new, freshly laid road, a squadron of armoured rovers roar onto the scene. The elated garrison forces join up and support the fresh advance

Has anybody ever seen the AI actually use supply crawlers to deliver resources from remote tiles to settlements? Please spoiler your own replies.

Aww, after all the buildup I've been doing for them? Yeah, the AI doesn't use a lot of stuff. Don't think I've seen them use hovertanks or copters either, but it'd be a shame to skip those as well. Can we have some limited use at least, maybe some sea crawlers for the Xochimilco base? I'm fine with not spamming them, but there's no harm in using a few. After all, the AI does use orbitals, which are much lower risk.

I know they use orbitals as well, so I feel no guilt about using them. Don't worry, supply crawlers will still be vital for delivering materials to Secret Projects- at least, once we get the tech. If I'm going to compromise on Supply Crawlers at all, it will be specifically so they deliver resources from special resource tiles, on the premise that those are rich enough supply points for remote exploitation, and will be limiting the number of remote resource points exploited by any given settlement. Even that, I'd like to put up to a yea or nay vote by the people reading these spoilers. What say you all?

Leonard,

I'm growing increasingly concerned that the Expansionist Party is skewing dangerously towards the right. You know what my support is worth, but I'm not willing to countenance getting in bed with the Federation whilst a state of war exists. We don't want to be like the 20th century United States, showing up late to major conflicts then having to pour in huge amounts of resources and materiel, forcing our economy into the shoddy military-industrial-centric state which led to their downfall. We need to take our cue from Switzerland, a policy of armed neutrality, no-one's fool, no-one's doormat, but everyone's banker, with by far the wealthiest citizens. As it stands, I cannot support the Expansionist manifesto. If need be I'll found or support another party with less inclination towards shoving our personnel into the meatgrinder, but I'd prefer to maintain our working relationship. I find the amended proposals to be acceptable: Better training for those tasked with our protection, greater awareness of what's out there, and keeping pace with expanding North Pholus through new colonization efforts on sea and land. Let's be frank: The last thing we need is Spartan jackboots marching through Gaia's Landing or Dominion Mindworms devouring the populace of Sparta Command. The last thing our neighbours need is to be fighting a two-front war. Having them at each other's throats is fine, so long as neither of them tears out the jugular. Allying with either would be too much of a shift in the balance of power, but we should be watchful, and intervene to prevent either of them crushing the other, preferably through our strengths, namely economic and industrial support, rather than their strengths of brainlessly sending people off to die."

Not involved in the dirty work, Avery? Hell, who do you think funded and masterminded the adverts that took us from rank outsiders to neck and neck with Morgan's anointed back when you were still rubbing shoulders with the RSP? I've been doing far more to back the Expansionist Party and for far longer than your demagoguery for this electoral cycle. Now, don't get me wrong, I do appreciate what you bring to the table, and I pay attention enough to realise what that is. Between us, we appeal to different sectors of the electorate in different ways, and the best outcome for both of us is that meshing well with each other's efforts in order to get Leonard here elected. We need both camps, disaffected ex-RCP as well as our central base. Without the huge part of the electorate that nearly got us in last time, you're basically just splitting the RCP vote, which was the smallest of the three to begin with. We turn ourselves too eagerly into RCP-lite and we lose out on the votes of the people who saw us as the sane, positive alternative last time out.

We're not disregarding the ex-RCP, but RCP failed where it mattered the most, thus RCP policies do not have the popular mandate. Expansionist policies, though? We split the electorate right down the middle, our policies can claim equal validity with the party which controversially edged it. And as for wanting to be like the late lamented US of the 20th century, if you're looking at the wealth of a nation, you don't look at the ones on top, you look at the ones on the bottom. Millions living in poverty, a police state which fired on its own people so much that they rose up and tore it all to shreds. Switzerland, though? The US barely managed two and a half centuries and was undisputed hegemon for less than one. the Swiss? Eight hundred years as a cohesive nation, and at peace backed by armed neutrality for the same length of time it took the US to be born, grow up, flare briefly and die. They were still there when we left, they still had the cities with the highest standard of living in the world, they still had the highest per capita number of millionaires and the lowest per capita rate of poverty. I want to emulate the Swiss because I want us to actually last, and I want us to all be the wealthiest people on the planet. You don't get prestige for being a smouldering ruin that tore itself apart.

Colleagues,

Firstly, commiserations Leonard. With a lower turnout, it seems we didn't retain as much of our base as we needed to. We need to reinvigorate the party: Bringing on board the RSP was not successful: We split the RSP vote, but at the cost of disappointing too much of our base and appearing as too much of an 'all things to all people' populist party. We need to retake and entrench the centre rather than either wing, we need a cohesive and consistent manifesto right from the off, and we need a bold statement of intent. To this end, I propose:

*A Planetborn candidate. We need to connect with the majority more, and let's face it, the three of us can remember old Earth. I have some promising prospects willing to step up, but I'd leave the final decision here in Leonard's hands.

*A manifesto more in keeping with the powers of the office. Keep the command centre plank. Keep the expansion mindset. Lose the exact precision on which units where, lose specific alliance proposals. Those smell too much like central planning, and we are not the Spartans. Make sure people know what we stand for: Strong defence, outward-looking ethos, willingness to explore and expand. No warmongering.

Thoughts?

I had hoped never to have to send a mail like this on this planet. It is with great regret that I confirm the reports that we are in a state of war. The aggressor delivered a final ultimatum to the Colony Executive moments ago. Those of you with loved ones in the security services or who wish to volunteer have my leave and blessing to down tools and go with immediate effect if you feel it necessary. Those of you wishing to be reassigned away from (or towards) the relevant border will be with all expediency.

Most of us have had the fortune never to experience war firsthand, excepting those who have witnessed the Federation-Dominion conflict. It is a seemingly inescapable part of human nature to factionalise and to go to extremes, to bring about conflict when peace would benefit all. Weapons designed to cope with the hostile native life are going to be repurposed for use against our fellow human beings, and that is one of the greatest tragedies to befall North Pholus in its short history. Never forget that our opponents are human: Their twisted ideology has incited them to violent action, but if we demonize them we become no better than them. We will end their lives not because they are 'different' or 'wrong' but because they threaten our homes, our family, our children, and the values we as a society hold dear, individually and collectively.

I hope for a swift resolution to the present crisis. Our security forces are well paid, well equipped, and well motivated with our lives and homes at stake. We will support them every way we are able, through our industrial capacity, through the innovations of our researchers, and through the support of every person here. It is on them that we now trust our lives and livelihood.

Be sure to tell your families that you love them.

Sure, I'll take it over and take it back to the centre.

Expansionist Party conference, Keynote speech, AJ Kusisitiza

"Colleagues, friends, citizens of North Pholus, we stand at a crossroads. This past decade has seen massive, sweeping changes to the world, to our colony, and to our party. As you well know, the scandal of opportunist warmongers even amongst our own ranks, people willing to use the utter tragedy of the Dominion invasion for political capital, forced us to winnow our ranks and clean house. We are not a party of cynical opportunists, nor should we ever be. The actions of the Federation illustrate all too clearly what lies down that path, yet appeasement, utterly distasteful as it is, remains a better option than a two front war. Nonetheless, we will not forget their blatant thievery when once more we are on more stable footing.

Our own internal struggles rightly pale into insignificance in the face of Dominion terrorism. They have scorched our forests, destroyed our recycling facilities, their actions giving the lie to their hypocritical agenda. We cannot, must not and will not tolerate such fundamentally anti-human behaviour, and we will hold the line as best we are able until we are in a position to restore democracy and sanity to our South Pholus kin. The perihelion of our secondary stellar body is an advantage to the eco-fanatics, as the proliferation of mindworms plays into their hands given their deplorable willingness to warp them into a weapon to use against their fellow man. They will answer for these war crimes, this I promise you.

But we will not merely react. Ours is a progressive nation, looking to the future, seeking to do what is right by our citizens. We will cooperate with our security industries such as the redoubtable Talon Securities, who have sacrificed so much for our safety, and the venerable Rat Patrol, heroes for generations since our first landing, in the installation of command and control centres to give those tasked with protecting our loved ones the best support and training we can manage. It is an investment in the protection of our most vulnerable by strengthening the aegis of our defenders.

Even in this time of turmoil, we must not become introspective, insular and isolationist. We must look outwards, look beyond our shores and our borders. Whilst I will not pledge the accelerated and demanding rate of expansion Leonard Smith advocated, our policy remains to find out more of our world through exploration, and to send out new colonies as and when the time is right to do so, properly defended, to extend our reach and strengthen our nation. If we do not do so, our hostile neighbours will, and we simply cannot afford that. This remains secondary to our struggle with the Dominion fanatics, but even in the heat of battle we must not lose sight of the human desire to make a better world for our citizens.

Finally, I am glad to step down as Interim leader, knowing the party is in safe hands. Charles Ackinwade is a great man, a veteran of the Rat Patrol, born in Tellus Cooperative, a genius economic theoretician. I am hopeful that he will become a truly outstanding Colony Executive, his mix of hands-on experience in the most hazardous of duties coupled with his undoubted intellect make him one of the best candidates for leader our colony has ever had. Please join me in welcoming the new leader of the Expansionist Party, Doctor Charles Ackinwade!"

Political Broadcast, Dr. Charles Ackinwade, Expansionist Party candidate

"Citizens of North Pholus, a choice stands before us. The old ways or the new, the policies of those who left a dying world a hundred years ago, or a new philosophy, a new way of doing things, born, nurtured and ready to blossom here on Chiron. Look at the choices our neighbours have made: One adopting a way of life from three thousand years ago, of primitive austerity masterminded by a militaristic state, and one from a quarter of a millennium ago, the ancient hippie culture of mid-20th century Earth. Do we want to turn our backs on the road ahead and cling to the relics of another world, unimaginably far away, which only a handful of our people remember, or do we want to forge a new destiny, a new way of life for the place which for so many of us is the only world we've ever known?

Humanity has been here a hundred 'years', though even that measure of time seems arbitrary to the sensibilities of those whose parents and grandparents were born here on a world with a different orbital period. Yet in that time, we know of barely a fraction of the human societies on this, our own world! The Spartans, who idolise ways of life so utterly primitive that it precedes the advent of iron, know more about the human cultures of this world than we do. Is that not shameful? Here we are, sane, rational and reasonable beings, that have grown so insular, so inward-looking, that we don't even know what happened to the four colony pods of legend, barring that one of them successfully made it. I propose we do the one thing we should have done one hundred years ago: Look for them! Make contact! Establish ties with our fellow human beings!

Our party has, in the past, advocated an aggressive stance. No longer. Our demands for better resources for those defending the lives of our people have been met, with command and control centres established along our southern border. I believe it imperative that we take politics out of the war: Our misguided opponents attack us on ideological grounds alone, and our defence forces, headlined by Talon Security and Rat Patrol, have proven more than equal to the task. Let them wear themselves out against our defences, whilst we put our resources towards better understanding our world and our universe. The technologies of today are insufficient to wage an offensive war, so we buckle down and work on improving the lot of our citizens, and if that gives us tools to better prosecute an offensive campaign, then and only then is that option even on the table. Killing our fellow human beings is a tragedy of the highest order, and never a path to be taken lightly except when preserving the lives of our own people.

Our enemy, our greatest enemy, is ignorance. It is blindness. It is a lack of knowledge, of education. It manifests in the misguided attacks of our southern neighbour, in the massive blank spots of terra incognita on our globes and maps, in our limited understanding of both Chiron and ourselves. This is the battle the Expansionist Party was formed to fight! Giving our defenders the wherewithal to do their jobs is the baseline, for before we can thrive, we must survive. Beyond that, supporting the geniuses and innovators who will give us the tools to shape a better world, and sending out scouts on sea and on land to map out the lay of the land, to recover the bounty of century-untouched resource pods and to make contact with the rest of humanity, are our next highest priorities. We have been insular for far too long: Let us look outward, see what this world truly is, and stake out our place in it. I thank you."

A reminder: we ARE having Colony Executive elections this time around. I'd also appreciate if the Expansionists and RSP would get me a coherent platform, OOC, that I can refer to like the NPCP platform Night10194 provided.

Expansionist platform for this election:

* No offensive war at this time, given the necessary time for research and training of sufficient units. Ensure our defensive units are kept well equipped and supported.
* Possibly start building up a strike force if the tech falls into place, but this is solely at the discretion of the CE under advisement from the security companies, not an obligation.
* Sending out scouts on sea and land to find the other factions, locate good colony sites and exploit resource pods is a priority, too much of the map is still dark after a hundred years.
* Improve cities to enhance research and quality of life where possible. Build colony pods if a city is at max pop and high growth to prevent horrific Zee Pee Gee scenarios.

Edit:

Another vote:

Civilian investors and consumers in Tellus have an opportunity to influence what project the settlement pursues next. Possible directions of development are 1) a new colony mission to break new ground further up the Great Pholus Ridge, 2) a sea colony mission to settle western waters, 3) similar maternity and early educational services to those now, or 4) an exploratory salvage and diplomatic mission to seek out Unity cargo pods and the possibility of finding human settlement on the coast of the continent of Chiron Minor.

Anybody interested, please vote, representing where investment and consumption money is going.

1. New colony on the Pholus Ridge.

Yeah, the primary difference between the NPCP and Expansionists in this cycle is 'Do the same thing about the war, then Build.' or 'Do the same thing about the war, then Explore.' Yeah, the effective split is the Broad party versus the Tall party versus the Aggro party. The thing is, the Morganite pop cap really hurts going tall until we hit Kusitiza Datametrics' grand project tech.

There's definitely room for slow and steady growth as an option: The current rate of roughly one new colony per update is absolutely fine.

Edit: and I've been voting build four every single time for ages for probably exactly the same reason, as well as writing fluff R&D posts.

Also to AJ Impy, I apologize if the sea exploration proposal seems a bit like it's sniping your party's territory, I just happen to agree with them that it's a good point to put into practice.

It's all good! Changing the paradigm of political debate so that a given area of policy becomes a broadly accepted norm across party lines is a longstanding tradition, such as when in the '90s and 2000s the UK parties were trying to establish their green credentials when the Green Party was on the upswing.

Kusisitiza Datametrics strongly trends pacifist: Their infrastructure projects have little military application (Aside from the incidental benefits of better energy storage and distribution, and the potential for the eventual remote resource gatherer modules being used as another nonmilitary scout option) and whilst there is a strong backing for the units responsible for defence, going on the offensive would be a hard sell..

Nwabudike,

We're at a crisis point here. I know we've been going on about this for literal decades, but I really do believe we are on the cusp of a revolutionary breakthrough that will change North Pholus forever, and not a moment too soon. We are fast approaching the nightmare scenario of having more population than we can comfortably accommodate, even with people diverted to the newest settlements through societal pressure. But the fact is, we've been starved of research funding and lab time. Yours is still the voice that resonates loudest in North Pholus, and I believe that with your tacit or overt support, Kusitisiza Datametrics' grand project can at last come to fruition.

Warmest regards,
Adhama

PS: I know we haven't always seen eye to eye politically, but I really do think Dr. Charles Ackinwade is on the right track. Would you ever consider an endorsement?

New Party: Progress

Speech by Professor James Ackinwade, Colony Executive candidate for Progress

My fellow citizens of the republic, the time has come to embrace the future. Within this next decade, economic indicators predict an explosion of growth and development throughout North Pholus, touching upon every aspect of our lives. It is our duty to foster, encourage and harness this growth so that all may benefit. The spectre of zero population growth will be forever banished from our lands, and new technologies mean shortfalls should soon become a thing of the past.

War still looms over our nation, not only with the misguided Gaians but also with the so-called Believers under Miriam. This war was the price of our pact with the Spartans: In exchange for getting in bed with a warmonger, we get more war. Funny how that works, isn't it? What the hell was our present executive thinking?! As ever, I believe firmly in keeping politics out of war and leaving its prosecution to those best equipped to do so. Talon Securities and Rat Patrol will have a free hand and all the support we can offer until Dierdre Skye is willing to come to the negotiating table in good faith to create a lasting peace. We know nothing of Miriam and the Believers: This is not our war, and it is not our way to declare war without ever speaking to a given faction. Our relations may have been permanently soured, a bridge burnt before we could even think of crossing it. Nonetheless, we deal with what is, not what might have been. We must find them, and if they are amenable to a fair peace, grant it. If not, then we will be paying for Cal Foster's folly for decades to come.

Our platform is this: The best possible society for our people, the best standards of living, and a wilful, concerted effort to continue to improve across the board. Allow those entrepreneurs who wish to stride forth and set up new member settlements for the Republic to do so. War out of the hands of the politicians. Trade, industry and the economy are our strength and our bastion, and maximising our endeavours to support them is our main priority.

It is time for North Pholus to upgrade. It is time to vote for Progress."

Platform:
*Hab domes! Our cities have a cripplingly low population cap. Hab domes remove it substantially. More people mean more of everything.
*A Remote Resource Collector in every base. let's make shortfalls a thing of the past, without leaning on this particular tech too excessively.
*A fair peace is better than war, an unfair peace encourages war. No tribute paid to aggressors, but do what is necessary to secure peace, up to and including taking bases until they come to the table.
*Colony pods at a sustainable, manageable rate. We don't want to swamp the world in low quality cities, but we don't want prime real estate to be squandered unused or claimed by rivals either.
*Build up infrastructure to increase quality of life. We want Republic citizens to be free, happy, healthy and wealthy.

Morgan,

I'd like to file a request for a new colonial venture: A fully automated city, or at least one that can eventually become one. You've seen, both with our energy storage and distribution projects and with the successful rollout of our remote resource gatherer tech, that my people tend to be very forward- thinking, innovative and above all patient, given the decades of extensive development and testing which has become our hallmark. Working with our partners in the Xochimilco base was an eye-opening experience: The city had been expertly tailored to suit both the needs of its environment and the requirements of its founding company. I think for the next phase of our developments, we'll need that operational freedom. We're looking at both human and artificial intelligence, interlinking them with our automation processes. The benefits, long-term, will be of incredible potential for us all. Please, look over these plans and let me know what you think.

Kusisitiza Futures: The City for all our Tomorrows

* A city with double the allotment of Remote Resource Gatherers, with the Kusisitiza prototype stock repurposed for the good of all.
* Research and networking installations a priority, a place of learning with extensive R&D potential.
* A place free of native life research, enabling a concentration of focus on technological solutions whilst freeing up our old lab space for such utilisation back in Morgan.

My warmest regards,

Adhama J. Kusisitiza
