Welcome to the Miscellaneous Auto Racing Megathread of 2015. This is the place to discuss racing that isn’t NASCAR, F1, or Indycar. Mainly it’s been Tudor United Sports Cars Series or the World Endurance Championship or British Touring Car Championship. Other stuff is welcome like all the GT3 championships in the world (Pirelli World Challenge, Blancpain, regional GT3 championships), WTCC, Formula E, what have you Racing Series’  This is the premier that all of the manufactures want to compete in and win. This is the 3rd year under the FIA this championship is running with . This year will have 8 races and America gets a race back with IMSA running at the same time, but not Sebring probably thanks to the merger. Classes include LMP1, LMP2, GTE-Pro, GTE-Am. LMP1 is getting a resurgence of manufactures with Porsche joining this past year, Toyota and Audi being stalwarts, Nissan joining this year with a possible roadster, and other manufactures rumored to run since F1 engines can easily be run here. LMP2 has seen a drop down in the amount since it’s much cheaper and easier on the teams to run the ELMS. But Le Mans is when you get a big swarm of them and actually is decent to watch. GTE=Pro and Am is business as usual with many teams and a couple manufactures having their big dogs running for the championship and many fans crying Corvette isn’t running full time. Well they’ll get the old Vipers now. Schedule April 12 — Silverstone May 2 — Spa-Francorchamps June 13-14 — 24 Hours of Le Mans August 30 — Nürburgring September 19 — Circuit of The Americas October 11 — Fuji Speedway November 1 — Shanghai November 21 — Bahrain  The European Le Mans Series has seemed to make a recovery from being on its deathbed to being a respectable series. Helps having a super strong LMP2 count since it’s the cheaper alternative for teams to run this series and Le Mans rather than go everywhere with the WEC. With the driver ranking system allowing a silver or bronze driver in the car, it makes guys who have wads of cash from their totally respectable, not breaking any laws whatsoever businesses and race fast cars. Also GTE Pro which are the GTE cars and GTE Am cars which are the GT3 cars. No one drives LMPC but LMP3 cars will be eligible this year. Schedule April 10-11 — Silverstone May 16-17 — Imola July 11-12 — Red Bull Ring September 5-6 — Paul Ricard October 17-18 — Estoril  The 2nd Season of TUSC, IMSA, whatever you want to call it. Lots of controversy, bitching, complaining, trolling by Jordan Taylor, and what not kept us pretty focused on what this season will bring us. Last year the Daytona Prototypes, to be specific the Corvette DP, dominated all of last year. P2 teams are still looking for the breaks so they can be a little more competitive to the DPs and looking at Mike Shank’s team, looks like they’re doing better. LMPC cars are dwindling and good reason since they were complete dumbasses on level with Ferrari. GTLM continues on sans defending champions Dodge Viper but still has the strongest manufacture presence in it’s class. Cars You’ll See LMP1 - These are the most powerful and unique of the Le Mans Prototypes. This class is mainly fielded by the manufactures but there are some privateers who usually gets curb stomped by the manufactures and now more so since they got rid of the LMP-L and H distinctions. These cars can produce up to 600hp with the combustion engine alone but can go to 800 and 1000 hp with the help of the electric motors, reaching speeds approaching 200mph or higher, and feature top teams using diesel and petrol engines with hybrid capabilities. Last year Toyota poo poo kicked everyone winning all but two races. Unfortunately for them one of them was Le Mans which Audi yet again snagged. Audi was way off pace this year probably in due of abandoning a hybrid system that they lost a lot of power and made pretty mediocre compared to the Toyota. Porsche had a decent first year back in the top ranks and got a win at the last race. No real big changes this year and Nissan is joining the fray with 2 cars and up to 3 at Le Mans. It’s rumored the car will be a front engine roadster without a wing a la the DeltaWing. We’ll see if this is all a rouse until we see the Super Bowl ad to reveal the car.  LMP2 - Nothing much has changed in the regulations and won’t change until 2016 when regs start unifying the P2 and DP cars instead of the wacky balance of performance we got now. Still it's about the privateer teams and cost control. A race ready car should not exceed $550k and minimum engine runtimes are slated to increase steadily over the next few years, with one engine eventually required to last 50 hours by 2015. These cars should be producing somewhere in the neighborhood of 400 - 450hp and should hit speeds of at least 170mph. As this class will almost exclusively feature privateer entries, there should be makes and models of all types. P2 teams will also be required to field a gentleman driver; see the driver class section below for more on that. As with the P1 cars, P2 cars are increasingly becoming closed cockpit cars with the Ligier, HPD, Lotus (  ). The ELMS is most popular with these. IMSA has a better grasp at balance of performance with these cars managing to get one P2 car a win and actually competitive to the DP in racing conditions when it’s not a heads up battle on the straightaway. Though the series with the gimped P2 cars has discouraged them from racing them here so ESM is only doing the endurance races, OAK is focusing on WEC, Muscle Milk left after 2 races, Though to fill in the gap Michael Shank has switched from a Ford Ecoboost DP to a HPD Ligier that proved very competitive in the hands of OAK and Krohn getting a Judd Ligier. HPD has also made a goofy looking one to say the least that has been far off the pace in testing. DP - These are cars with a spec (or at least tightly regulated, a la NASCAR) closed-cockpit prototype-style chassis. They produce around 550+hp for a top speed of 200mph. Engines you'll find in this class include all of the normal DP engines but the main ones are used are the Ford Ecoboost V6, Chevy V8, and since BMW-Dinan V8. Main bodies you’ll see is the Riley DP, Ford Ecoboost DP which is a modified version of the Riley, and the Chevrolet Corvette C7 DP which was updated from last year’s car (this body can be placed in any DP chassis so that’s why you’ll see Dallara on the Wayne Taylor team, or Coyote for Spirit of Daytona or VisitFlorida.com team as they’re referred to now). Rumored that Action Express with Millenium Racing was working on a generic body for the DP chassis but that was dead on arrival since next year could be changing all the cars anyway. This car will be running in the P class with LMP2 cars and the DeltaWing in the IMSA series.  GTE - The highly-competitive GTE are split into two divisions. These cars are based off of production vehicles, so a Porsche looks like a Porsche, and Corvette looks like a Corvette, etc. At full wick these bad boys can hit speeds approaching 180mph. Nothing of note has been changed this year for the GTE cars so teams aren't shuffling around and making wholesale changes to their cars unless they are getting new cars and stuff such. If you can think of a performance car manufacturer, then they’ll likely have a car running in this class in one country or another, very likely with full factory support. Manufactures include Chevrolet, BMW, Aston Martin, Porsche, Ferrari, and next year Ford. Last year there was supposed to be a finalizing of GTE and GT3 but complications from manufactures mucked it up and reorganizing of classes has been shelved. In WEC, there is Pro which are for the manufactures and privateer teams that want all professional drivers and Am teams with at least a year old car and an amateur driver with pro drivers. In IMSA GTE is referred as GTLM.  LMPC - Le Mans Prototype Challenge this is a spec class with all teams using the same Oreca LMP chassis and Chevy LS3 V8 engine. These cars look like LMP cars but have less speed and power compared GT cars. As such, their top speeds are only around 165mph, despite their looks. It’s not surprising to see GT cars pass these guys. FLM cars are designed to be cheap to run and last a long time, to help newer teams break into the business. Despite their name, these cars will not be allowed to run at Le Mans, but IMSA runs them. In a year or so it will not be surprising they will be replaced by the LMP3 class since they have no relevance outside IMSA. Group GT3  Started in 2005 this class of GT cars was built with the intention of bringing in several one make series cars and really any racecar under homologation rules to run in this series. In this way you get a vast amount of cars from McLaren 620’s to Bentley Continental to Chevrolet Camaro.. Usually not ran by a factory team but by privateers and rich people who can fund these cars. That’s why at Spa you get 60 some odd cars for the running and most like to get Ferraris and almost kill people with them if the 2014 race was any idea. Cars of all sorts can be made put into GT3 by homologation rules and balance of performance so you get such a wide array of cars, but it’s preferable to get newer cars with development closer to the manufacture (looking at Bentley, Cadillac, and McLaren). Also similar to GT3 is the GTD class in IMSA which is GT3 cars for the most part but with a spec wing and diffuser. I'll get you a new write-up on Super GT, and add in some links where you can follow stuff. Radio LeMans and NISMO covered a couple of the final rounds, and SuperGT has been better about putting up English clips after races too. One thing I do know about - the No 2 GT300 team will be running a Lotus Evora (!?) that probably is JAF certified because wow, nobody made a GT3 of that.

Is there anywhere to get the one hour highlight shows of BTCC either on TV in the US or on the internet? I miss that lovable series on my TV in the winter. Also, is there a list of teams eligible for the championship in TUSC (or whatever they called it last year)? There was some list posted in a PDF showing who the full-time entries were and listing the "alternates". The GAINSCO guys pissed me off, but they were a good entry which doesn't look like it's coming back anytime soon. Plus, their rivalry with Ganassi never really exploded in earnest. Racing is full of downers.

GAINSCO is off to World Challenge with a Hyundai. As far as season entrants, probably lot of them are finalizing for the season and run at least Daytona and Sebring.

That's another reason WEC has squeezed some cars out, with a hard limit of space for fly-away races they have a smaller grid for some races than they otherwise could. It wouldn't be worth adding two or three cars in versus the cost of another plane. So it seems like some of the P2 guys are sticking with ELMS instead, and the GTE grid is slowly becoming pro-only. [Edit] it was confirmed last week that the 95 Aston, the Dane Train, is gonna be a GTE Pro entry this year.

But also doesn't help having a camp grounds on a hill overlooking at the track. I'd say secret car testing will end at COTA.

CotA, like the 'Ring, is where manufacturers take cars in that short window between secrecy and release to drum up public interest. Nissan absolutely knew those shots would come out.
