I went to a weather interrupted part of the first round of day/night games last year at the Rose Bowl and 25% of the crowd was a family of four watching the game from the balcony of the hotel at the far end of the ground

if they want to attract new fans to the game they might want to start making sure all of the crickets actually on free to air tv, rather than inventing new games nobody will watch. India and Australia both turned T20 competitions into big entertainment products that have brought new fans to the game, the ECB's solution is just well what if it was shorter?!

Kicking around some ideas on /r/cricket

My favourite idea so far is five twenty ball overs, swapping the bowler after every five balls, so four bowlers have to bowl one over (disclosure: totally me on reddit suggesting that idea).

I am 100% certain some of the 100 ball games will take longer than some T20 games, with how slow over rates can be sometimes. The 10 ball over will probably take 20 minutes to get through

the ECB has to be the stupidest governing body in cricket, and this is a sport with Zimbabwe and the Windies in it. making changes for the sake of change, plus totally mis-reading their conservative audience (who if going by Guardian comments want nothing more than only Test matches, only on free-to-air, and only with commentary from Aggers and Blowers and Johnners and Another Old Oxbridge Typers), all while somehow killing off youth interest in the game.

If the ECB were sensible, they'd realise that there is gently caress all on TV on Sunday's during the summer and force Sky to simulcast the broadcast of a Sunday's play with a terrestrial channel, and also ensure that all Tests start on a Thursday so Sunday's play should at the very least see a result or close to one (and in turn drive viewers to Sky's coverage for the final day if necessary). Hell they should go further and do terrestrial simulcasts of Saturday and Sunday play in tests

Why are the ECB letting TV companies drive their silly "growth" agenda when TV is shrinking?

Airstream Driver

They should make it a single 120 ball over where they have to change the bowler every 6 balls. The catch is each bowler can only bowl a maximum of 24 balls.

The issue is that the ECB like the money they get from TV too much to want to do anything that would mean less money for the game.
As part of that, everything has to be as easily packaged as possible - George Dobell's got a piece on cricinfo that points out that a 100-ball game could start at 18:30 and finish by 21:00, so BBC or ITV could still have a prime time drama afterwards.

The problem I have with it is that it's basically impossible - unless you've got Sky - to have more than a passing idea of what's happening in First Class cricket in England/Wales. A couple of the counties have wickets or selected highlights on their Twitter feeds, but it's rarely more than a single, fixed camera angle to the point where if a catch is taken in the slips, you can't reliably see what happens. If you can't watch either domestic or international cricket on terrestrial TV (and Sky keep putting their prices up), how are you going to sustain a high level of interest in the game?
My dad thinks that first-class cricket isn't appealing to the general public because "no-one's got the time to sit and watch cricket for 4 days", but no-one apart from retired club members and cricket correspondents has ever gone to watch the entirety of a first-class game regularly. Throw an extended highlights package on iPlayer or something similar and people will watch it - poo poo, throw the full game up with a 'next ball' button (hire an intern to set bookmarks) and some people will watch it.

So yeah, the issue isn't that people aren't interested, it's that the ECB aren't interested in an option that results in less money. Even if it fucks the game over in the process. The stupid fucks.

I wonder how much money / effort it would take to get just one more camera in to provide a wider view once the ball is hit out into the field.

Watching the Surrey vs. Hampshire game on the Surrey CCC YouTube channel at the moment and it is good, but yeah, even that one extra angle would be nice to see.

The Surrey stream obviously has a camera at each end, as the bowler is always running in from the bottom of the screen and the batsman at the top - I'd almost rather the second camera be a wider view but whatever, it's good enough.

I watched bits and pieces of the Middlesex game last week on their website and they just had the one camera at one end, very reminiscent of vintage footage you see on YouTube.

I don't think the county lads are wearing trackers (I'm not even sure if anybody does) so you'd have to do it by direct recognition from an overview image. Certainly doable if they wanted to, you're not doing anything fancy, just roughly picking out the not green bits in the image and coordinate mapping. Nobody would give a huge gently caress if you're a metre off their actual location either.

Yeah, that would work. I'm surprised the IPL or other big time leagues haven't done something like this.

Yeah golf needs this also, a camera set further back so it doesn't look like every shot is a shank. You'd see the ball flight etc.

I’ve been wanting to check out some cricket games and to gradually learn more about it, but I don’t know what the big leagues are, when the games air, or what the season is. This thread is a bit huge to get thru so I hope it’s okay to ask this here...

Where should I go online (I don’t have a tv) and what should I watch in May?

In May, the Indian Premier League is your best bet. It's a T20 competition so there will be at least one game a day I think that's usually played in the evening India time. That should be good to learn cricket basics. There should be paid streaming services (ESPN maybe?) and free online streams of dubious legality.

The easiest to watch right now (and basically the only thing running outside of county) is the IPL, because even if you're not paying for a channel the streams are pirated loving everywhere.

You're a bit out of season for god's own format of the international test match series, but that runs for most of the rest of the year. Cricket is weird because most of the general national tournaments - even in the primary playing nations - just ain't very good.
