This is some pretty shambolic running from some extremely experienced players. I guess they're thinking about bowling already.

If you have spent more time outside of Australia than you have spent in Australia in the last 12-24 months, for the sake of this rule you are not considered a resident of Australia, and thus are allowed international travel. It is this exception I am personally hoping to make use of if/when I get a new job. So possibly Shane "it was only one pill that my mum gave me" Warne either has a property in England, or has been galavanting around the world long enough to qualify for this.

Yeah, a good captain wouldn't have had a bunch of fielders on the boundary when England needed less than 10 to win. It just looked like Azhar hadn't actually watched any footage of England being England. The way you defend a total like that against England when the batsmen are attacking is to hide the ball outside off-stump with an 8-2 field and wait for them to get bored and nick behind.

goatface posted:Joe Root is not a good captain. I think he is a limited captain. He should never have been made captain, it was done simply because his face fitted. Captaincy is like everything else in cricket, it takes experience to get good at it . Before being made test captain he had only captained Yorkshire twice. They were a wining team at that point and both times they lost. He's had to learn on the job (like Cook before him) and he doesn't have a natural flare for it. He is probably a good man but you need more than that to be successful.

Yeah. For all that people justifiably poo poo on his captaincy, the only other option punched his way out of contention. I dunno. I think his captaincy has gone alongside aimless and unfocused leadership throughout English cricket. They've been so focused on growing the television audience and making money that all the sporting decisions have been made with only superficial attention. Root, Strauss, Silverwood, Giles were all *fine*. But they were obviously picked because they were the first names that the ECB came across that fitted the brief. Like, they've not completely hosed up, but they have forgotten that being the best at any professional sport involves investing time and attention in finding the absolute best solution, not just "good enough"

ShaneMacGowansTeeth posted:I don't think Joe Root is a good captain That was from 8 days ago, probably when Root brought himself and Bess on to use up the five overs post lunch to get to the new ball and got tonked for 27 runs after the England had conceded just over 40 in the entire morning session. Now Buttttttler and Woakes got England to safety but Root makes so many questionable decisions, and there are periods where he lets the game just meander along with his solitary plan of "well, hope Stokesy/Jimmy/Broady gets a wicket here, I'll look a loving genius" and nothing to fall back on if that doesn't work ShaneMacGowansTeeth fucked around with this message at 18:55 on Aug 14, 2020 |

Root feels like he should be the transitional Captain until they workout who should be the real captain (*cough* Burns *cough*), apart from they will stick witj him as his face fits and that's why England won't reclaim no.1. That or they are just about to ruin Pope.

It's like he gets instructions during breaks and then follows them until they don't work, at which point he falls back on the most basic and bland strategies until he can get inside for more time with the coaches.
|
# ? Aug 14, 2020 19:46 |

That's probably true, but his best captaining decision was probably letting Ben Stokes bowl that stupidly long spell on day 2 in the Headingley test against the Aussies in 2019, but I doubt that Root had anything to do with that
