Excited for a day of faux panic* about England having to try and hang on days removed from when they literally batted for a day and a half.

*They'll be all out by lunch.

Somehow Australia will manage to be 100 all out in their second innings so I'm not panicking yet.

Probably not a popular opinion, but why isn't Swanny on Ashes TMS? He had quite a fun level of banter with Isa and Aggers and can sometimes have some actual insightful things to say about bowling.

Well it was nice to have some early wickets, but I'm expecting they'll be the last we'll see for the next few hours with these two at the crease.

Time for a dumb question, but something I've been wondering about.

Rulewise, do pace bowlers always have to bowl pace, and likewise, spin for spin bowlers? Can they change their delivery type and/or run up mid over?

Basically, if we had the power of science to build the best bowler that ever was, would the rules of the game allow them to bowl off a short run-up and vary ball to ball with the spin of Warne and then the pace/swing of Anderson the next?

Would this actually be an advantage?

Ah awesome, I just love the idea of a guy wanging one in at 90mph and then booping one in with some serious turn the next.

I know it will never happen, because they’re both extremely specialist skills and opposite ends of the spectrum but hey cricket.

Edit: of course it seems from the one guy who actually could do it. Cricket history is awesome.

Yeah, giving Broad the keys to the DRS decision making definitely would not hilariously backfire 2 balls into him opening the bowling...

Good to see that Lyon is taking getting jeered by the crowd every time he catches the ball in his stride...

Here's my dumb new to cricket question for this test.

If a bowler bowls a bouncer, and in the batsmen's reaction they take a hand off their bat to shield their face and inadvertently end up clean catching the ball in that hand... what happens? Are they out? Can they just chuck the ball and go for runs?

Any idea what’s going on between Root and Wade? I get there is usually a fair amount of sledging but the Umps don’t normally get involved do they?

Is Denly playing well or is this a cunning plan by the Aussies to make sure he keeps his place for the next 2 years?

Also lol at the Aussies showing no interest in reviewing 2 decisions that would be out and then getting lovely with the umpire about a ball 3m away that was missing the stumps.

I will laugh and laugh if he did what some of the NBA players have done which is get bored of the hotel food and get caught getting stuff delivered from UberEats.

Edit: BBC thinks it happened between moving from Southampton up to Manchester, so I'm guessing he either popped in to see a mate on his way up or couldn't resist stopping off for a Greggs on the M6.

For as long as I care to remember, the galaxy brains on sky and the like have been harping on about needing players who can bat time and now we have one and its all :hurr:

Hopefully Anderson is fired up like Broad in the last match to prove his place with some wickets.

I doubt it – or no more than normal. On Tailenders this week he pretty much came out and said that it was a joint decision between him and the selectors not to play the 2nd test because he's old as poo poo and they need to manage his workload if he's to make it to the next Ashes.

Good match to watch, the sides having pretty much zero depth past the openers also makes for some hilarity if they get out cheaply like they did last night.

The scoring graphics are really obnoxious though and need to go.

Given where they are now they'd have to work REALLY hard at it.

I don’t know - Root’s hand was well strapped in the afternoon so he might not be able to play an innings as well as his last few and we all know that the other fuckwits can get themselves out for a combined score of 50 so it’s still well on the cards.

Only went and got myself tickets to day one of the test didn't I? Excited to see my first international cricket in probably a decade.

My tangible fear though is that the likes of Broad, Anderson will have all retired/broken by then but excited nonetheless.

Nearly a perfect cluster gently caress ending to the T20 blast at Edgbaston.

Lancs needing 4 from 1, swing and a miss. Celebrations, stumps, fireworks etc.

Called back for a No ball.

Sadly Lancs didn't convert on the free hit for maximum hilarity, but its quite up there.
