http://www.ew.com/article/2015/02/19/empire-ratings-guess-what-just-happenedquote:If your guess was: “Empire’s ratings just defied all the laws of broadcast television to once again rise to a record number” … then you would be right. This show is literally breaking almost all the records possible as far as ratings go. I'm still shocked and holy poo poo is Fox over the moon right now and looking to ride this show to prime-time dominance. It's honestly competing with TWD, a show that for years has been untouchable by the big 4 networks.

It helps that the show is so good and the actors are stellar and things happen week to week. Though to be fair, a lot of it was to see if Cookie and Terrence Howard would bang and since it happened I'm sure the ratings will go down.

...this show is supposed to be a comedy, right? I mean I watched the first episode and I didn't loathe it or anything but laughed way too much for it to be a serious show. The whole "Lion in the Winter but with record business" marketing thing kinda led me to expect something bit more dark... Then again when you discount all the wars and blood and death thing the Plantagenets were pretty silly.

There's plenty of comedy, it's not a bad way to react. The ratings were adjusted up to 5.2.

I really love this show. With a lesser cast or writing it'd be loving atrocious but I really really enjoy it. Music's great, too. The ratings are SO good I feel like they have to bullshit their way to keeping Lucious healthy though, and I dunno how they'll do it.

There's no way Terence Howard is the only draw this show has, is what I'm saying. Not with numbers that gargantuan. If this keeps up by the end of the season they're going to be competitive with The Walking goddamn Dead and they off major characters on the reg. Also "competitive with The Walking Dead" is not a phrase I thought I'd ever type with regard to ratings.

That's actually a really good point, I guess it's just that Terence Howard is SO loving GOOD that the thought of the show without him is weird right now. Also he'd lose his speech completely even before dying, which...that'd be quite the thing if it gets that far. Also "Money For Nothing" is way better than it has any right to be. I'm not really a Timbaland fan in general but Jussie Smollett and Yazz, Jussie in particular, are just...awesome.

Latest episode definitely got more interesting. With Lucius as the main character, the show clearly signals to you that he's wrong about the homophobia. So with Andre, there is definitely a sense that being mistrustful of 'whiteness' - a concept that seems to be accepted - leads to the conclusion that racism towards Andre's white wife is justified. Maybe my reading here is wrong though. The show currently depicts Andre as the evil son without the musical soul, and I wonder if he will get a more nuanced character arc going forward.

Which is nice, since he's gotten the least characterization so far, other than bipolar, menacing businessman.

That was pretty shocking but definitely something I've heard about being a serious deal in the black community, and how most people view diversity in America as "we'll accept any race or creed so long as they dress, talk, and generally act white". It'll be more interesting to see how different TV reviewers approach the subject.

I love this show so so so much, and yet at the same time, I want an entire seperate show that's all set in the 90s flashbacks world and directed that way. Seeing how they got to the place they're at in the beginning of the series, including Cookie in jail and Lucious as a single dad, is like a zillion times more interesting to me as a premise. I'd love a prequel.

I think this show has done an amazing job at capturing the black TV audience. Don't get me wrong, I'm white and watch it as well. But I have a lot of black friends (without having that come of in the, "Really guys, I'm not a racist" way) and every Wednesday when this show is on, they blow up FB talking about it. And I'll be honest, most of my black friends are hood friends (as in I met them in the hood when I still lived there), and I think that's what appeals -- these characters came up off the streets

Being black and gay isnt as big of deal as it was in say, the 90s. I'm so tired of this stereotype. There is a huge black & gay community. Chances are anything that became cool within the last 5 years started there. (Basic, twerking, on fleek etc) That's not to say there's no homophobia at all but there is this old stereotype that Blacks are more homophobic than white people and in my experience that's just not true. If you are ever in Detroit, we have a huge scene here. It's great. The lack of awareness and stigmataztion of mental illness is really bad though, and it's hosed up. Now that I think we're definately worse than average on.

I am enjoying this show over all but I do think the really high quality that I felt was established in the first couple of episodes hasn't really been sustained. I guess I have a hard time embracing the extreme soapiness of it. Having said that, I want to see Porsha and Becky take over Empire when Lucius kicks the bucket.

This past week I was serving on a sequestered jury (very interesting experience), and some love song by a gay singer (aimed at his boyfriend/lover) came on the radio and all 4 of the deputies (who were all black) who were escorting us around were totally fine with it*. I think that there are actual statistics that also prove that homophobia isn't any more common in the black community than it is among whites as well. I've been kind of irritated at the forced drama of the Lucious/Cookie/Aneka situation. I don't like it when shows have drama that could be really easily solved by just talking things out or making reasonable decisions. I also wish that Aneka was more sympathetic; she's more or less consistently portrayed as just being an absolutely reprehensible human being (spiking that addict singer's drink pretty much cemented her as being irredeemably evil in my mind), and it's hard to figure out why Lucious is with her in the first place. It also means that she isn't a very interesting character. On the other hand, I was really happy to see the Cookie/Hakeem and Hakeem/Jamaal relationships improve (as a result of the simple "being honest and talking it out" solution I just mentioned). Hakeem congratulating Jamaal on coming out was a really heart-warming moment. *Not just in the sense of not saying anything about it; they were talking with us jurors about what the song was about after someone asked about it.

Andre's actor is loving nailing it as someone's descent into full blown maniac depressive. His excitement during that sales pitch seemed creepy as gently caress when you realize its his manic behavior, and when he was finally breaking down everything he put into those scenes, the twitching, the body language, and changes in the tones of his voice was loving amazing. It was like watching a human being slowly start to unravel, and it just made the scenes with Jamal talking him down even sadder because him and Hakeem knew this was some serious poo poo that won't go away. The last scene with him and Lucious was intense, especially given that Andre's actor is inches away from Terrence Howards, big time movie star and Academy award nominee and still knocked it out of the park. I'm worried they won't be able to keep the pace for this show. I think we're going to get an amazing 13 episode season but what comes next will feel underwhelming. pentyne fucked around with this message at 07:05 on Mar 5, 2015 |

Yeah, Empire's unprecedented ratings growth, the fact that it's happening with an almost entirely black cast, and that it's being driven mostly by an undervalued minority audience that network TV tends to ignore has certainly not been a topic of discussion in this thread and elsewhere.Rurutia posted:I can't get over how much I love this show. It sounds fine when it's nicely produced, but when it's just them singing it it just really falls flat for me. With that said, you're crazy if you don't love Conqueror. Estelle's version is awesome as is, but Jussie just really props it up. With that said, I agree that Jamal and Hakeem really complement each other. They did a great job with that casting. My favorite songs before Conqueror was No Apologies and Money For Nothing.

The other artists and the people in Jamal's life simply don't care about it and even Lucious is happy to suck it up if it meant signing a major artist. As for the love triangle, the scene between Anika and Lucious made her pretty sympathetic. She was an ordinary innocent person before she was caught up in Lucious' bullshit and who knows how much she had to sacrifice and compromise for the sake of their relationship and Empire. This show should really end with Lucious death and everybody living happily ever after.
