My first real online gaming experience in Quake 2 went something like this when I finally joined and loaded the server map:

Spawn to see a guy with the human male model somehow blended with the strogg infantry skin jumping towards me with a rocket launcher, then freezing in mid air. The ominous brown "unplugged" connection problem symbol taking up the top corner of my screen. I sit there staring at it for like 5 minutes waiting for it to get going while Cow & Chicken is playing on the living room TV behind me. Every minute or so the game twitches with a quip blip of noise then freezes again.

Ahhh, dial up with AOL on Mplayer and Heat.net :allears:

Oh yes, I think all of us who remember the dial up days went through that. We didn't get DSL in my area until pretty late. I vaguely remember Mplayer, from when I first started gaming when I was really young. I did use gamespy though! And of course I went to planetquake to read Lowtax articles :D

Well no, someone just needs to make a game where most of the gameplay and plot elements are dynamic and randomized, so that writing walkthroughs and solutions is impossible.

Then people would complain about not seeing everything on their first playthrough. Listen, I will not dispute that EA, Blizzard and others are lazy and simply want a Streamlined Content Delivery System so as to garner as much money as possible. "Just have ten or so different plot points and conclusions" and have it not be purely text-based or with simplistic 2D graphics and the coder mumbling into a circa 2000 microphone is impossible on any schedule. If I proposed anything like that on Kickstarter, people would roll on the floor laughing, that poo poo is a pipe dream, and these are the people that gave $2.5 million to FTL

It's why Minecraft was so popular, the illusion of freedom without the need to create a story or actual graphics that represent things coherently

the omaha beach landing in 2002 was pretty crazy. now, in the future, it's pretty poo poo. the better omaha beach landing is that pointe du hoc level in call of duty 2. but call of duty 2 is utter dog poo poo, apart from that level.

return to castle wolfenstein owned in 2001. and it owns now. and will forever own

Throwing pipe bombs into an elevator to surprise the assholes on the next floor was always fun :colbert:

Plus I always loved all that cheesy interaction poo poo you could do with the environment. And Return to Castle Wolfenstein does still rock, but gently caress that "fat wall edge" issue when sniping.

those are cool things, but then you spend 15 minutes circling the same area to find an exit, and when you find it it's only a secret area.

in one level there are two paths. i took the one on the right and ended up in a giant chasm with plenty of paths but no escape.turns out i had to take the one on the left first, and then, through no action of your own, the terrain of the right path completely changes so you can progress. gently caress you.

It helped LPers make fucktons of ad revenue so it can't be all bad, right

Seriously, though, outside of Easy Mode FTL is pure punishment and, like Minecraft, creates the illusion of depth and complexity while doing nothing to convince the general public that video games are indeed An Art Form and not Expensive Electronic Hobbies

Far Cry 4, Alien Isolation, Castlevania: LOD2, Ground Zeroes, Shadows of Mordor, Dragon age 3 and countless other games that came out last year were amazing. Same with movies, Whiplash and Birdman, Guardians of the Galaxy and John Wick.

I had fun with Borderlands 2. Mr Torgue owns. I was having a good time on Diablo 3 too before I just abruptly stopped playing it because I had just built a PC. Maybe I'll buy it on PC and just start over.

Destiny sucked big balls though for sure. I don't even want to trade it in because Gamestop is the worst and I don't want to have some other poor soul make the same mistake I did in purchasing the game. But mainly because Gamestop is the loving worst.

Dare I suggest that Titanfall is a good game?. The multiplayer campaign was a let down and had really cheesy dialogue, but the potential is definitely there for the sequel in terms of the world-building, and it has been done successfully before in Conker: Reloaded (which everyone has forgotten about) and Wolfenstein Enemy Territory.

In a few years I can see Titanfall being viewed as a cult game that didn't receive the recognition it deserved, because it's so easy to hate on due to it's connection to CoD and EA. They put a great deal of effort into the whole conflict between miners/colonists and the environments, and there's tons of stuff going on during a match, dropships, ziplines, mechs stomping around, drop pods crashing down. It's really exciting stuff.

Most people in this thread seem to be the type that would blow it off because it's a shooting game with men in future armour, but if you have an appreciation for good sci-fi design and atmosphere, it's definitely worth playing. They've added a whole new co-op mode that's similar to ME3 co-op as well if you're not into PVP.

I did this with my PSP and now I can have the hand held experience of mah childhood all over again.

I used to have that 'Super Gameboy' add on for SNES which let you plug gameboy games into it to play them on TV with a controller.

There are still a lot of good old games which conviently can be bought from goodoldgames.com - Though I've found that I genuinely do not like some of the games I used to play anymore, which kind of suggests that gamers put up with old games because there wasn't anything else.

Being young also helps because your imagination is good at making its own fun.

That looks like crap.

Ultra-hard retro platformers are all the rage these days but some of them are just loving lazy. VVVVVV, super meat boy, IWTBTG, just don't seem interesting. Woo, die a hundred times until you can play a level from muscle memory and get to the next... identical level that also looks as interesting as a lazy newgrounds flash from 2005.

The retro throwback games that actually build on the best aspects of old games they draw inspiration from and add clever things to the formula are the ones worth playing. Freedom Planet, MURI, Shovel Knight, MegaMan Unlimited, etc.
