This doesn't really work with vanilla, unfortunately. However, and not really relevant to the original idea, with the right mods you can totally do this. I once tried to play a merchant who was only a merchant. I crafted some stuff, but basically hired a bunch of mercs to do all my dirty work. "I'm the Dragonborn you say? Wonder how I can monetize this..."

Also Skyrim on Switch is fine. A really good way to play if you're good with vanilla.

Legit curious, which mods are these? What does hiring mercs to do the dirty work mean? Like you enter dungeons and progress through the quest markers but NPCs you hire do all the combat?

Yep. I'm not at my PC at the moment but can post you the mods that really make it possible tomorrow. The main one is Follower Framework, which allows me to have up to 10 followers and set it to pay them a weekly fee (that I also set to not show up in their inventory so I'm not tempted to cheat). I also installed some trading and merchant mods to make trading and prices more dynamic. Mostly the loot we find in dungeons goes to my crew and I sell the rest (I have a pack animal mod too). I used Live Another Life alternate start and was part of a shipwreck, so I started from nothing. Bootstraps!

I roleplay it pretty hard core and don't even equip weapons unless I have to (because my dude didn't train with weapons, but is a coward and great at sneaking.) It gets pretty tough sometimes because my money gets eaten up quick, so we have to make a quick turnaround on dungeon loot (for which I also have a mod that gives better and more loot - it balances out really well). I do not pay Lydia because she is one of the perks of being a great and awesome hero (I am building my brand in-game).

I always wear my wedding ring. It's my trademark.

In my last run, I played a non-combat khajit thief with fast travel disabled and survival mechanics. I took carriage rides to other cities (so to avoid combat and why walk when you can ride), rented a room in the local inn and took a nap there until after midnight.
Then I snuck around the city, breaking into rich houses to steal jewelry and vases, and pickpocketing people in their sleep.

Whenever I got caught, I would just spend some time in jail.

It was a super fun playthrough.

So I started playing Enderal recently and its kind of blowing my mind that 10ish people and a bunch of pro bono voice actors seem to have basically made Skyrim 2 with the same level of quality as the main series (so far) and its totally free.

I really like some of the changes they made to the mechanics too. The skill system is really creative and the perk trees are cool and pretty unique. You can become a badass soul-eating werewolf quite easily.

If anyone is looking to play more Skyrim, but also different, I definitely recommend this from what I've seen.

It doesn't take that long. I think I spent a few days just installing and testing stuff. A lot of mine ended up being things to just make the game look a tiny bit better and add more interesting items.

Besides the basics that everyone should install like Static Mesh Improvement and Unofficial Patch I have:

Alternate Start: For coming up with some cool roleplay reason to basically have nothing and not have dragons flying everywhere from the get go: https://www.nexusmods.com/skyrimspecialedition/mods/272

For some added difficulty I put in: Mihail Monsters Liches, Bone Colossus, Dwarven Colossus, Draugr Patrols and Pahmar Mercenaries. I did this because they were lore friendly and I didn't want it to be easy for my hirelings to carve through everything.

Trade and Barter: This was to make it harder for me to own the merchant game in Skyrim. This has some really granular settings that allowed me to skew the trading game against me. You have to balance it off the other mods for the sweet spot. https://www.nexusmods.com/skyrimspecialedition/mods/23081

Better Vanilla Perks: I just really, really like this mod and some of the improved perks that it gives. If you don't install other mods to balance this out it can get really broken higher in the perk chain. https://www.nexusmods.com/skyrimspecialedition/mods/3939

Perk Points and More Gold for Bounty Quests: Again, just to balance out the added difficulty. This may seem like it breaks the game until you factor in that I don't fast travel and that a roving draugr patrol from Mihail Monsters can absolutely decimate you. Makes bounties totally worth doing (especially if all I have to do is escort the hired help) https://www.nexusmods.com/skyrimspecialedition/mods/2743

Complete Alchemy and Cooking Overhaul: I am a merchant crafter so I use this and smithing to help level (it's amazing how slowly you level when you don't use a sword or bow). I also like this because it has a lightweight hunger and tiredness structure built in. Things were already too hard to add something like iNeeds or Frostfall on top. This also stops me from completely abusing potions unless I work my butt off for it. https://www.nexusmods.com/skyrimspecialedition/mods/19924

Nether's Follower Framework: This, in my opinion, is the only thing that makes a trader playthrough possible. Super granular, but once you get it set up and balanced off of everything else it is like a mini game managing pay for hirelings. Has some shortcut commands for everything so you don't have to trudge through menus for every hireling. I turn on paying hirelings (when it makes sense, though I try not to take too many "free" ones) and the setting that makes them killable and stay in the 'defeat' pose until battle ends or I heal them. In a way they are more of a main character than me. It also allows you to set roles, so Lydia, for example, can taunt enemies and keep them away from me, or I can set her to stay by my side and defend me. This also has hireling horses built in. Amazing mod. https://www.nexusmods.com/skyrimspecialedition/mods/18076

I also have ESO skyshards in there because I was like, what the hell, and it ended up being a lot of fun. It's another way to (very) slowly get perks because I don't level quickly. https://www.nexusmods.com/skyrimspecialedition/mods/6331

Loot and Degradation: Makes it where I have to repair my armor or pay a blacksmith to repair it for me. Can get pretty granular with it depending on how hard or easy you want to make the game. For example I do not have it set for armor to break completely, but do have it set so that It takes a few days for the blacksmith to repair something and have the courier send it to me. Those few days are days were we aren't getting loot but I still have to pay my workers! Time is money! https://www.nexusmods.com/skyrimspecialedition/mods/21744

Rebalanced Leveled Lists: Very important if you don't want to go broke quickly with the other things installed. Makes the danger totally worth it. https://www.nexusmods.com/skyrimspecialedition/mods/26

Everything else on my list are little fixes like making textures look better and adding cool lore-friendly weapons to the loot table and stuff. Unless I'm missing something those are the ones that I have found a super sweet spot for a trader character. I haven't had too many issues either and have not really been forced to swing a sword yet. I do use restoration spells, but that's just to keep myself alive.

The beginning of the game was HARD. Jenassa was my first hire and I pay her a weekly wage of 500g on top of the initial 500 to hire her. For a long time at the beginning we were riding the edge of bankruptcy almost every week. I have somehow made a really nice feedback loop with all these nutty mods.

A big part of Boethiah’s deal is proving your supremacy by killing anything that threatens it, however they are also definitely the “gently caress the police!” Daedric Prince.

A big part of Boethiah’s portfolio is using violence to topple authorities, effectively proving that “The Man” isn’t all that by killing them, and in particular they are known for doing this to stick up for the underdog. The first big example of this is the Eating Birth of Malacath, where Boethiah “ate” the elvish god Trinimac because he was talking poo poo about Lorkhan, and shat him out as Malacath, the god of being the eternal Underdog. Not only did this create the Orcs, but it also stopped Trinimac’s persecution of Veloth and his followers, who would go on to be the Chimer.

This isn’t the only time Boethiah’s showed up to help people kill their persecutors. In ESO, there’s a quest line where an avatar of Boe that comes to the aid of a clan of Giants. So yeah, they’re definitely the god of the violent end “gently caress the police” in the Elder Scrolls.

🚣RowboatMan: ❄️Freezing time🕰️ is an old P.I. 🥧trick...

Last night, I was playing Skyrim, picked up an old save from over a year ago, maybe 2. I don't have many mods installed, and I'm not running the special edition (PC is old, which is one of the reasons I'm interested in the Switch version).

I went to Solstheim for the first time, got the story from the guy who greets you when you're still on the boat, and then spoke to the guy who watches the builders building that temple nearby. I then went into the Retching Netch, learned of the history of the name (lol) and slept for 24 hours.

Then the Dragonborn quest completed and I was transported into the main dungeon for the Miraak quest, that ends with reading the book.

Wtf? I checked the wiki briefly (I'm at work, so I skimmed it) but none of what I experienced showed up there, not even in the bug section. Did this happen to anyone else? Did I just miss the explanation for what happened?

Boethiah is kind of a weird one because on paper she's gently caress the police, but in actual gameplay she's just straight darwinist. In just about every game, anything task related is boiled down to you proving your strength by killing others.

One feature from Skyrim that TES 6 should drop.

It's the experience system :psyduck:

Levelling up poo poo by DOING things with that skill is one of the best things about TES series, so what the hell is this person on about? Sure, the handling of it should be done better, and I hated how enemies auto leveled with you in Oblivion (and Skyrim, though less so), but sheesh.

leveling restoration sucks

especially in oblivion where the expansion that adds restoration-focused gear kills off the only people who can reference you to a master restoration trainer

Orcs and Ostriches

The Great Twist
There's something lost between Morrowind and Oblivion/Skyrim that changes parts of the levelling system. Yeah, levelling Restoration sucks. It's terrible. In Morrowind, I could easily get trainers to boost me affordably. Hell, most of my levelling in Morrowind was done through trainers. My idiot attack-only Barbarian would train in axes and medium armour, the only two things I was constantly using, just because it was more efficient than levelling.

Trainers exist in Oblivion and Skyrim, but they feel prohibitively expensive unless you're doing weird poo poo with money, and you're so restricted in how often you can train per level. Contrast to Morrowind, where one of the first quests you do are find the Blades trainers Caius tells you about, and you're expected to use some of them. Plus I found it way easier to make money in Morrowind than the others, so even if the prices are comparable, I'm better off using them.

I jumped everywhere in Morrowind to level Acrobatics, I found it pretty fun. A good test was being able to jump over the river in Balmora. After that I could RP a ninja and jump from roof to roof, there were even roofs with an entrance to the house. Pro gameplay that.

I just went and created "Fortify Jump by 100 pts for 2 seconds" spell (which is actually something you could do in Morrowind). It allowed you to clear roughly a third of the distance the unique super-jump scroll did, but it was still more than enough leap over a mountain or a castle with a single cast. It also stacked with Acrobatics, a character with several levels under the belt could usually survive the jump without any tricks and cost only something like 30 magicka, allowing you to do several jumps before having to recharge your mana bar.

Basically from mid-game onwards my default method of travel was Hulk-leaping everywhere and it's still one of my favorite memories of Morrowind. :allears:

This is normal for Solstheim. Until you've done some stuff in the expansion's main quest then sleeping in most places will transport you to one of the strange temples being built and temporarily turn you into one of the mindslaved laborers. It won't always take you to Miraak's Temple, but it certainly can.
