One Nation, Under God.
Mortal Kombat Ekkusu is a 2.5D fighting game, developed by Netherrealm Studios and published by Warner Bros. It's a followup to the hugely successful MK9 game from 2011 and will offer an enhanced version of all the features that made that game such a commercial success: not-terrible 2D fighting gameplay, a big ridiculous story mode, tons of content and lots of "ironic" murder porn.

The game is set for release on PS4, Xbone and PC on April 14, 2015. There's also an X360/PS3 port in the works, which has been delayed until June. NRS is doing the PS4/Xbone versions, with the last-gen/PC versions being handled by High Voltage Software.

UNPAID PR BLURB

-Next generation! MK9 was a reboot/nostalgia show, but the devs are pushing MKX as the next evolution of MK in terms of introducing lots of new characters and progressing the designs of the old ones. The new character seem okay right now but there's still plenty of time to stink up the roster.

-Fightin'! MK9 was the first MK in a long time to even make an attempt at being a competent fighting game, and MKX is set to build on the foundation set by MK9--2D fighting, three-tier super meter with EX moves, breakers and x-rays, etc--while adding systems from Injustice as well as new systems, most notably the ability to choose between three "variations" of each character. Scroll down for more details!

-Storytellin'! The events of MKX are a direct continuation from the end of MK9's story mode and stretch up to 25 years into the future. Who are these new characters? Who's running poo poo? Why are all these dead characters walkin' around like nothing happened? Hell if I know!

-Content! The game is set to have lots of single-player content, just like before; arcade latters are back, Test Your Luck is back, the Krypt is back, etc. Challenge towers have been replaced with Living Towers, online-integrated challenges that rotate hourly, daily and weekly.

-Online! Again, they haven't said a whole lot about the online feature set but we do know they'll be rolling out a goofy clan/faction system that lets you win points for your favourite MK faction by playing online. One would hope the netcode is better this time around but I wouldn't get my hopes up.

-Kiefer Sutherland! Apparently! http://au.ign.com/articles/2014/02/22/24-star-kiefer-sutherland-involved-in-mortal-kombat-game

-Tremor! (DLC, available, May 10, included in the Kombat Pack season pass)

NEW SYSTEMS

-Character variations! Each character comes in three "variations" that determine various special moves and other attributes that augment the character's core moveset. As an example, Sub-Zero has a "cryomancer" variation that gives him various weapons formed out of ice, an "unbreakable" variation that uses ice for defensive moves like parries, and a "grandmaster" variation based around the ability to craft ice clones. These variations are unlocked by default and are chosen before each match: think isms, not stances.

-Stamina! There's a new stamina gauge underneath the life bar that regulates the use of runs, backdashes, breakers and interactibles. The bar is segmented into two sections; some moves will require the entire bar to initiate (breakers), others will drain whatever's there (running). Stamina automatically regenerates while idle, or all at once a few seconds after being hit.

-Running! The run from MK3 has returned and exists alongside MK9's forward- and back-dashes. If you press the block button at any point during a forward dash you'll initiate a run which lasts until you release the button or run out of stamina; a dash can only be cancelled into a run, but a run can cancel into any move.

-Interactibles! Interactible stage items have been carried over from Injustice but have been scaled back quite a bit; their use has been standardised across all characters and they're now fully blockable. For the most part, they seem to exist at the edges of the stage as a means of allowing players more ways to get out of the corner and don't have a lot of offensive utility.

-Meter burn! MKX features both MK9-style EX moves and Injustice-style meter burn, with their applications being character-, variation- and move-specific, and there are moves that can be both EX'd and MB'd (Scorpion's spear, for example). You can also MB throws to reset a character to standing at the end of a string, among other things.

PRE-ORDER BONUSES AND OTHER BULLSHIT

-Goro yeeeeeeeeeeeah this is hosed

-Special Editions! There are a bunch of these things and the contents of each SE/LE differ between region, platform, etc so rather than list them I'll just direct you here: http://community.wbgames.com/t5/Official-Announcements/Mortal-Kombat-X-editions-All-the-information-you-need/m-p/396836#M17

(For reference, the "Kombat Pack" includes 4 future DLC characters and 15 costumes.)

-Controller! PDP is once again manufacturing an offical MKX controller for PS4, PS3, X360 and Xbone; this controller is based off their last-gen Fight Pads but now has a d-pad instead of a digital nub. They haven't yet shown off the Sony version but the MS version has a X360/Xbone toggle switch, so you'll be able to use that pad on either console, a first for any FG controller, I think? Here's a clip:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zZnpbT5sS3I

-Comic book! DC is running a Mortal Kombat X comic that ties into the events of MKX's story mode and explores the backstory of some of the characters. The comics like to tease the presence of new or returning characters but it seems like it's mostly just a vehicle for them to deconfirm terrible characters that were never gonna show up in the first place. Each new issue is available digitally via Google Play and Comixology (99c each) and they're also available in print but I don't know anything about comics so don't ask me about this stuff! http://www.dccomics.com/browse?content_type=comic&keyword=MORTAL-KOMBAT-X-2014

I just looked into the Injustice comic (which is still going!) and apparently this is the first time anyone ever thought of taking out Black Adam by just putting the lasso of truth around him and forcing him to expose his power word? That seems like such an obvious thing so it's kinda weird to find out it hadn't happened until this forgettable game tie-in comic was written.

I don't think MKvDC or any MK since the arcade days got a Japanese release, and even then I'm guessing it only ever came to consoles, not actual arcades filled with a million other real fighting games.

Freddy sold way better than all the other DLC characters and Scorpion outsold all the DC characters in Injustice so they're gonna keep doing guest characters and you're presumably gonna keep buying them.

Why were the post MK3 games so bad, before Warner acquired Netherrealm? Was it Midway's fault?

Midway was one factor towards the end but it's mostly that they went from barely knowing what they were doing in 2D to having no idea what they were doing in 3D, plus most of the competition from other fighting games had dropped off at that point so there was no incentive to improve because people were buying their games anyway.

Emmett Graves from Starhawk would actually fit really well.

I read that Netherrealm approached Microsoft about having an exclusive character the same time they did with Kratos from Sony, but Microsoft wasn't interested. Nicole in Dead or Alive 4 was actually pretty popular so this surprised me, I wonder if they'll do something this time now that they have like zero popular franchises left. I guess a car from Forza. :laffo: It seemed like a no brainer thing since apparently Netherrealm did all the work regarding Kratos and all Sony had to do was send them like a "this is canonically what Kratos is all about" person to inform them of lore and provide them with assets to look at and stuff.

There were definitely restrictions on what they were and weren't allowed to do with Kratos. A lot of the fatalities are toned down when performed on Kratos and they also weren't allowed to diminish his hardcore badass image, so in instances where the regular characters would do something silly they had Kratos shake his fist menacingly or grimace like an angry idiot instead.

I don't read enough comics to know if this is typical of comics with such short page counts but they're quite terse, so it feels like you're reading a wikipedia summary of an actual comic book. The later issues have been much better, purely because they've been doing multi-part stories.

They recently switched to a new artist so the art took a hit, but I think the old guy is supposed to be back before long.

NRS has managed 60FPS at 720P with vsync on both last-gen consoles, which is pretty much unmatched as far as third-party UE3 goes, I think. Even MK9 Vita runs at 60FPS, but the sacrifices they had to make to get the game running on Vita are very obvious. (I haven't seen or played Injustice Vita but I hear it isn't quite as hideous.)

We haven't seen the last-gen version of MKX but NRS is outsourcing it, so it'll probably suck.
