The Great Twist

Season Premier is February 25th on CBS!

What is Survivor?

Survivor is a reality show where a group of 18 to 20 or so contestants, from all walks of life, are stuck on a remote paradise and forced to live together for 39 days; gathering their own food, building their own shelter, and purifying their own water. The cast is split into opposing, equal teams, called tribes. The tribes must work together to form a community, in the hopes of one contestant becoming the Sole Survivor and winning one million dollars. At least one contestant is voted off every episode.

A typical Survivor season has three phases. Pre-Merge, Post-Merge, and Endgame.

  • Pre-Merge: Roughly the first half of the game. The tribes compete against each other twice each episode. First for a reward, and second for tribal immunity. Tribes that fail the immunity challenge will be forced to vote one of their own members out at the end of the episode.

  • Post-Merge: The tribes are merged together. Players are now playing for individual immunity and all players will participate in voting out a player from the tribe.

  • Endgame: Once 5-7 players or so remain, the show reaches the End game phase. Usually the very strong core alliances are shaken up here as people try to reach the end or placate the jury. The last nine players voted out before the final tribal council will join a Jury that will decide who will win of the final three (sometimes two) players.

White Collar, Blue Collar, No Collar

quote:

Host Jeff Probst explains the Worlds Apart theme: “The concept for this season of Survivor is White Collars, which tend to be the people who work in offices, might wear a suit, are in charge and they make the rules. Versus the Blue Collars, and this is really what America was built on and still what drives America, and these are people that work outside, they might wear a uniform, they work with their hands, and they tend to follow the rules. Versus the No Collars: These are the people on the outside that don’t have any interest in the status quo or tradition. It might be a jeweler, it could be a sailboat instructor, or somebody who works down on the beach. And they tend to break the rules.”

How the three types interact, says Probst, will be key. “The idea is, when you put these three very different types of people together, how will that play out, because it really is, I believe, a microcosm for what is happening in our country right now. Nobody seems to like the white collars—the rich. The blue collars are doing what they’ve always done, which is keep our country going. And the no collars have no time for either of it. They’re not interested in corporate America and they don’t really want to work in a normal job, so they just hang out on the outside sort of assessing and commenting on life and figuring out a way to get by.”

Supplemental Material

  • Rob has a Podcast: Available on iTunes or their website. He does a few podcasts a week discussing the latest episodes events, interviewing the player who was voted out that episode, and provides theories about strategy. This podcast provides insight into the game that was not aired on the show. It is heavily referenced.

Glossary of Terms

  • Bitter Jury: A jury that is voting against a player rather than for a player. Sometimes there is a perception that a player who "deserves to win" isn't getting votes because they were an rear end in a top hat and viewers/players will be quick to say it was a bitter jury. A bitter jury does not excuse a player who didn't win at Final Tribal Council. The purpose of the jury is to not piss them off so they will be willing to vote for you to win.

  • Blindside: When a tribal council seems to be set up so one or one of two possible players are getting eliminated, but somehow either a secret coalition or a surprising idol play makes it so someone else is voted out instead.

  • "The Edit": Survivor is a show to entertain. It is produced and edited in a way to give players a streamlined personality and to create as much tension before Tribal Council as possible.

  • Goat: A useless, awful, or crazy person that is not being voted out of the game specifically so a player can look like a more desirable final survivor to the jury compared to the goat.

  • HII: Hidden Immunity Idol. They are hidden around the island. Clues will be given that could reveal their location. One-use item that a player can use after the votes are cast (but before they are read) at Tribal Council to nullify votes against that person. They can't be used at Final Four player or later.

  • Mactor: Portmanteau of "Model/Actor". A player who doesn't know the game very well and are just using it to further their career.

  • Pagonged: Going into post-merge, it's the act of voting out the former members of your opposing tribe before voting out the former members of your original tribe. It's the reason it's important to win tribal immunity pre-merge so that you outnumber the opposing tribe members in post-merge.

  • Pony/Poison: After the new season's cast is announced, thread members will pick a "Pony" (someone they think is awesome and will win) and a "Poison" (someone they think will suck and/or be an annoying rear end in a top hat they hope will lose or just simply suffer)

  • Purple Rocks: In the event of a tie at Tribal Council, there is a revote, with only the people receiving the most votes being eligible to receive votes during that revote. If the revote also ends in a tie, Survivors draw rocks. Whichever player draws the differently colored rock is eliminated from the game.

  • Splitting the vote/Flushing the Idol: An alliance that splits its votes between two members to counter a potential idol play. If one of those two players plays a Hidden Immunity Idol, there will still be enough players voting for the other guy to vote them out. This strategy can be risky.

Like him, I love Survivor and all that it stands for. I believe that the game deserves to be honored by the individuals who are fortunate enough to play it.

Also, I’m mean enough to make it to the end but likeable enough to still get the jury’s votes. Plus, I can B.S. my way through just about any situation.

Name (Age): Joe Anglim, 25
Tribe Designation: No Collar (Nagarote)
Current Residence: Scottsdale, Ariz.
Occupation: Jewelry Designer
Personal Claim to Fame: I am most proud of winning a state championship for basketball my senior year of high school. In college, I played indoor volleyball at Northern Arizona University. After four years of being self-coached and self-funded, we upset the number one team in the nation in the finals of a Vegas tournament.
Inspiration in Life: My Dad. My whole life, he was incredibly hard on me and always pushing me to become better at everything I did. He grew up very poor and in a large family in which he endured a lot of hardships. Through the pain and sadness of divorce, family tragedies and death of loved ones, he was still able to keep faith and carry on. He has been an amazing father and role model to me and my sisters and he is a loyal hardworking husband who puts others before himself. I’ve always looked up to him and I hope that I can be as strong, loving and fearless as he is when I become a husband and father.
Hobbies: I enjoy anything that allows me to work with my hands. These include metalworking, painting, drawing and welding. I also love the outdoors- you name it: Hiking, climbing, hunting, camping, etc.
What is your favorite sport? It’s a true tie between basketball and volleyball. I love hoops but the last several years I've been playing a lot of sand volleyball which I love playing down here in the valley of the sun.
Pet Peeves: Bad hygiene, rude, inconsiderate people, that person with really nasty coffee breath who has no idea what personal space is, when the last person to use the bathroom doesn’t replace the empty toilet paper roll and when someone is telling a story and every other word is “like.”
3 Words to Describe You: Creative, compassionate and charismatic.
If You Could Have 3 Things on The Island What Would They Be and Why? 1. A fully stocked self-replenishing ice-chest 2. A toothbrush since I hate the feeling of my teeth being grimy. 3. Loaded up iPod because I love listening to music.
SURVIVOR Contestant You Are Most Like: There are so many players that I relate to in different ways. In terms of game play, I would have to say it’s a combination of Malcolm and Ozzy.
Reason for Being on SURVIVOR: Ever since I can remember I have wanted to be on Survivor. My primary motivation is that every day I dream about competing and earning the title of sole Survivor. With every season, my desire to play has grown more and more. The game is a true test of self-awareness as well as mental, physical and emotional determination. There is also a perk of a million dollars. I would honestly play Survivor for way less but the fact that it is one million dollars makes it that much sweeter.
Why You’ll “Survive” SURVIVOR: I would be an asset to the tribe because I am athletic and very competitive. I love competition and I hate losing. I am not lazy and I don’t mind doing what needs to get done in order to help others. I feel that I’m in decent physical shape, but I will work hard and will bust my butt in challenges and around camp. I have worked in different jobs that have focused on customer service and have dealt with a wide range of diversity in the workplace. This has taught me how to communicate and connect with people I don’t know. I’m a very social person and I enjoy getting to know people and their story. Being one of the most important aspects of Survivor, I feel my social game will be strong and lead to my success in the game
Why Will You Be the Sole SURVIVOR: With every season I watch, I can’t help but imagine that I'm actually in the game playing. My brain goes into game/strategy mode as I put myself in the shoes of the current contestants and analyze how I would deal with the conflicts each is faced with. Of course, it’s different when you’re sitting at home on the couch and know what every player is thinking. However, I feel that I am well rounded enough, athletic enough and mentally strong enough to adapt to the people I’m put with. I am confident in the life skills I possess and I feel I can maintain my focus despite all of the other personal and crazy things the game may and will throw my way. After being such a huge fan for so many years, I truly respect how complex and challenging the game is. I am ready to battle and I want my shot in the ultimate arena that is Survivor.

Name (Age): Hali Ford, 25
Tribe Designation: No Collar (Nargarote)
Current Residence: San Francisco
Occupation: Law Student
Personal Claim to Fame: Catching a huuuge wave last winter in Kauai.
Inspiration in Life: Clara S. Foltz- First female lawyer on the west coast and inventor of public defense. I admire her trail-blazing approach to law and life. My law school, UC Hastings, refused to admit her based on sex, so she sued them and graduated at the top of her class (while raising five children).
Hobbies: Surfing, jiu jitsu, motorcycles and whatever comes my way.
What is your favorite sport? Jiu-jitsu and surfing.
Pet Peeves: Not maximizing time and resources.
3 Words to Describe You: Tenacious, free and focused.
If You Could Have 3 Things on The Island What Would They Be and Why? 1. Law school bar review book - so I can stay sharp, plus it doubles as a journal 2. A pen and journal - to map out strategy 3. Ukulele - because it lifts the spirits and could become useful in other, non-musical ways
SURVIVOR Contestant You Are Most Like: Parvati Shallow because she is fun and vivacious, but more than meets the eye, always planning, calculating risks both strategic and social. She is physically strong and undaunted by rejection and resistance. We also have matching tats.
Reason for Being on SURVIVOR: The game itself. It is the ultimate personal challenge and something to tell the grandkids.
Why You’ll “Survive” SURVIVOR: I’m inimitably resourceful. Last summer, I caught a fish in a plastic grocery bag while camping and cleaned and cooked the fish for friends. I’m upbeat and fun, so surviving socially will be no sweat. I also perform well under pressure.
Why Will You Be the Sole SURVIVOR: I grab everything I do by the horns and don’t let go until I get what I want. Survivor will be no different.

Name (Age): Vince Sly, 32
Tribe Designation: No Collar (Nagarote)
Current Residence: Santa Monica, Calif.
Occupation: Coconut Vendor
Personal Claim to Fame: Traveling through 39 countries; all done on whim, wit and self-actualization.
Hobbies: Dancing, storytelling and Art of all kinds.
What is your favorite sport? Flying Rings / Rock Running.
Pet Peeves: Snoring, people who are lazy, passive, and entitled. Also, junk stuck in my teeth!
3 Words to Describe You: Magnetic, unconventional and intelligent.
If You Could Have 3 Things on The Island What Would They Be and Why? 1. Hair ties and clamp because my hair rapidly transforms into a monster mask that I can hardly see through. 2. Dental floss because I can’t stand junk stuck in my teeth. 3. Ear plugs because I want to kill snorers!
SURVIVOR Contestant You Are Most Like: I’m flirty and use my sex appeal like Parvati. I also have a bit of Coach and Fabio too.
Reason for Being on SURVIVOR: This is possibly the greatest challenge that I’ll face in life… and YES - A million bucks is a plus!
Why You’ll “Survive” SURVIVOR: I’m a pillar of support, nearly unshakeable. I’m a conflict resolver and controller. Also, my survival skills almost match my people skills.
Why Will You Be the Sole SURVIVOR: I can find a way to connect with almost anyone. I’m fit in body and mind. The “challenges” will be fun!

Name: Nina Poersch
Age: 51
Current Residence: Palmdale, California
Occupation: Hearing Advocate
Personal Claim to Fame: Overcoming my deafness. At no point did I let it rule my life. I did not let it bring me down. I have been able to educate people about the Cochlear Implant. I am very proud to say that I have inspired people to not let life’s unexpectedness beat them up, to find the positive, and to live life like there’s no tomorrow.
Hobbies: Running, hiking, reading, and photography.
Pet Peeves: Laziness, rudeness, and people who can’t park between the lines.
Three Words to Describe You: Persuasive, resourceful, and funny.
“Survivor” Contestant You Are Most Like: I would say that I can relate to Tina Wesson because she played the game how I would – strategically and with integrity. She’s also physically fit, active, and enjoys adventure, much like myself!
Reason for Being on “Survivor”: My primary motivation would be for the million dollars. I’d buy my parents first class tickets to Japan! My secondary motivation would be for the adventure and to be able to show people that you can overcome anything life throws at you. I would love for more people to know about the Cochlear Implant!
Why Will You Be the Sole “Survivor”?: I have always said that to win “Survivor” you need to sell yourself. That is something in my favor because of my own persuasive abilities. I also feel strategy is important and I have always been a proactive person. I don’t like surprises and therefore I am always thinking one step ahead.

Other things of note:
Long time fan of the show.

Name (Age): Will Sims II, 41

Inspiration in Life: God - for being the head of my life, my wife and daughter - for always believing and trusting in me and my parents for being great role models.
Hobbies: Basketball, karaoke and traveling.
What is your favorite sport? Basketball
Pet Peeves: People who can’t admit when they are wrong and people who don't tip.
3 Words to Describe You: Funny, loyal and caring.
If You Could Have 3 Things on The Island What Would They Be and Why? 1. Phone: So I could communicate with my family 2. Lotion: To keep my skin moisturized so I won’t be ashy on TV 3. Toilet paper: I think that’s obvious
SURVIVOR Contestant You Are Most Like: Earl
Reason for Being on SURVIVOR: Money! Money!
Why You’ll “Survive” SURVIVOR: I have great people skills and I am a team player.
Why Will You Be the Sole SURVIVOR: Because no one will be able to outplay my social game!

Probably unrelated to what a hearing advocate actually is, but there are deaf people very opposed to cochlear implants, or getting their hearing back.

Is it just me or have cast introduction videos gotten more obnoxious and homogeneous season over season? I watched most of these fools intro videos and I couldn't find a single person that I gave any shits about and find myself rooting for the girl who is like "if I win I'll buy....gently caress it....a jetski".

No idea what her name is though, because everyone was remarkably unmemorable.

I feel like that Survivor teacher fella should do good but no doubt he's going to flare out spectacularly in episode 2 or something (and I really hope he does b/c he's :smuggo: as gently caress).

Hopefully this season can channel the 3-tribe mojo to live up to the great BvBvB. Probably not though, but it can't be worse than last season.

Granted, a postal worker is hardly comparable to a steel mill worker but both jobs to me fit into the blue collar narrative.
I tend to lump all union backed jobs into blue collar so even a school teacher falls into that label.

I remember reading in the last thread that the blue/white/no-collar gimmick was added after casting, so don't try to read too much into it. It's just like brains/brawn/beauty. The attitudes the contestants adopt from their placement will be the most interesting aspect, and there will be a tripe swap soon enough anyway.

Yeah and I think they've all been great. Wiggler is a really great cohost and it's especially true during the Amazon chapter that was released last Friday.

I was worried that lovely seasons of Survivor would mean lovely chapters, but I think Thailand is probably the funniest out of the 6 released so far.

I'll start, why not

Ponies: Max (seems smart, low-key, knows the game and knows when to lie) and Joe (physical threat, likeable, something about him seems legit)

Poisons: Dan (too busy being a starstruck superfan to play the game or be interesting) and Shirin (will probably piss off her tribe in one way or another)

Haven't watched since Nicaragua, then came back for last season. Looking forward to this one.

Listened to Borneo for free but that season's already been so analyzed and discussed, didn't really pick up any new insights. Might try listening to the Amazon to get Cesternino's views on his own season.

Sorry, but I saw that picture and I want him to suffer for looking like an irredeemable hipster. Especially since he is sort of standing off by himself.

Actually, two out of the three guys in the white collar look like insufferable hipsters. And the third guy looks like a douche.

Also, how exactly is a law student 'no collar'? I mean, sure she's still a student but it's like the very definition of an aspiring white collar.

edit - Wait, how is a 'Barrel Racer' a blue collar profession? How many barrel racers can you name? I had to look it up to find out that it's a rodeo performer which seems like the very definition of no collar. Cowboys are blue collar, the rodeo performers are no collars.

Also, it sounds like they were grouping them more based on characteristics than profession... on RHAP, they were saying that Jeff described the White Collar group as the ones who are willing to backstab and do anything to get ahead... so the no collar group may be based more on how they come across than their actual professions.

I haven't watched the seasons since they originally aired, and I'm still really enjoying them! I ended up buying the whole first volume and I'm on Marquesas now.

You can download the entire first chapter, covering Borneo for free, so you can always just start by seeing if you find that worthwhile!

That being said, I am especially looking forward to them eventually getting to seasons that I've watched recently!
