So here's what's up:

It's 11 AM and the five of you are hanging out in the security building inside the festival grounds, pretty close to the gate. This repurposed chunk of the industrial park is supposed to be home base for the people keeping it all together, but in practice, the concert organizers are mostly schmoozing with the talent on the stage, and the Wallkill cops are set up outside the gate and not very interested in coordinating so far. It's you guys and a crowd of volunteers that keeps ducking in and out and generally not giving the vibe that they have this "security" thing under control.

See, there's a lot of people here. The organizers, mainly a pair of fresh-faced 20somethings called Lang and Kornfeld, promised the people of Wallkill that 50 thousand people would be showing up to Mills Industrial Park this weekend. That's about how many were camped out on the grounds last night. But today's the first scheduled day for music, and so many cars and VW buses are driving in that the roads around Wallkill are clogged for miles. Rivers of people are hiking in through the humidity, and it turns out that not all of them want to pay the $24 for tickets at the gate. People are starting to get pissed, traffic is unreal, the cops aren't being very diplomatic, and Richie Havens is gonna open the festival at 5. Lang and Kornfeld said you could come find them on the main stage if there's an issue, but they're juggling a dozen things as it is, and they don't even have superpowers.

One of the more with-it security volunteers, a big white dude named Harvey in sunglasses and a cowboy hat, hurries over to you guys looking quite distressed.

"Hey, Justice League- i'm not your boss, but we've got trouble out front, you want to give the greener guys some reinforcement?"

Ed wasn't happy. The crowds of people are severely over estimate, and a violation of the town's agreement with Lang and Kornfeld, and Ed didn't know if it was mendaciousness on their part or just incompetence. Either way, it was the town's problem now. Plus, on top of that, the police were proving to be totally useless in crowd control, the people Lang and Kornfeld had hired had no idea what they were doing (yet more evidence of their incompetence), and, as icing on the cake, he had never gotten around to making the specialized flowers he had hoped to use to screen the crowd....not that it would likely do much good now, given the number of people involved.

Still, they just had to get through the next few days, and the crowd would leave, thank goodness. Then it would just be a matter of cleaning up the mess. Oh well, sufficient is the day and all that. "Yes, Harvey?", he says with a sigh. "What's the problem?"

He glances over his shoulder- you can hear shouting from the gate.

Leslie Stanton

Les was off in his little corner of the room with pen and paper, finishing up a logistical diagram for processing the massive influx of people; lines go this way like so, admission stations go here, direct the cars there and so on. It was efficient, but with this many people, that only went so far. More importantly, it was designed to give the impression of forward momentum to the people waiting in line - hopefully cooling some tempers. He had just handed it off to Lazenby for his review and opinion; Les was a little fixated on the man as an intellectual puzzle to be solved. Every twitch, every sigh, every micro-expression, everything Lazenby had done in the short time they'd known each other had been subtly observed and then added to an increasingly complex cognitive model Les was constructing in his head. Well, 'subtly' wasn't quite true; he'd been varying degrees of subtle and obvious about it, and then he collated and quantified Lazenby's reactions to being observed to further aid in his understanding.

Les perked up as Harvey came in. Counterfeit tickets were definitely an issue he'd anticipated, but if not dealt with properly, it could further agitate the crowd. When they went out to deal with this, Les would hang back a bit unless absolutely necessary. The police near the gate would definitely recognize him as their boss's son, though with these crowds they'd have to be practically on top of him.

Lazenby Adams

Lazenby took the diagram from Leslie, nodding. He still hadn't quite figured the other man out. It was painfully obvious that whatever it was event that made him into a metahuman had greatly increased his intellect, the same as it had for Lazenby himself. But his thought process, in as much as he could tell from the things that he said and the way that he acted, seemed very different from the photographer's. Lazenby found himself liking the man without really understanding why, a development he found both interesting and disconcerting. There were very few things that he didn't understand, now.

"Well, that's certainly the most efficient way to do the ticket kiosks, love," he said after a minute, smiling warmly. "Maybe not the most elegant, though? If you move this one here 2.285 meters to the north, there'd be a lovely sense of symmetry for my establishing shots. And only about 4 percent less efficient, yeah? Your average concert goer will spend three and a half minutes longer in line, but that's a small price to pay for art, I'd say."

Case in point, he thought, as Harvey said his piece. The whole ticketing thing was probably not going to work long term — it was only day one, and with more and more kids streaming in by the hour they were even now just barely holding it together. But a fight at the entrance would accelerate things needlessly: the whole thing was more workable the slower they could get it to unravel.

"Well, let's go talk to them, then," he said. "I'm sure it's all just a misunderstanding."

Not going to allocate any gadget points for the time being, (still sort of wrapping my head around the rules) but I may declare that he has something in the next scene or so.

After all, it *was* his job and he really did want to make sure everyone has a good, safe time here.

He waited till Watts spoke up to contribute though. "Bennet groks the scene," he said, following him and Martin as they walked out of the security building. "Even if they're bogus tickets, we've got to be cool. People already are starting to freak out or get pissed. Showing we're not the bad guys will make things go down smoother the rest of the weekend."

"The problem with letting in people with counterfeit tickets is twofold, though", Ed explains to Lucas. "First, it's not fair to the organizers of the festival, who aren't getting any of the money from the counterfeit tickets. But even if we put that aside, there's a more practical and immediate problem, which is that there's only so much space. More people are showing up than we expected as it is. If we let in everybody, it's going to be mess, and everybody's safety and health is going to be endangered. Not to mention the fact that, while we have to keep the concertgoers happy, we also have to keep the people of Walkill happy. A lot of people in town are having second thoughts about having agreed to host this in the first place. Wallkill people are some of the nicest and most welcoming people in the world, but we're also a pretty small town, and not used to having such big crowds. And we have our hotheads just like everywhere else. If people's patience runs out....well, we want to make sure that doesn't happen.

Leslie filed away Lazenby's response to his diagram for future reference; his model was getting better. Then he handed the paper over to Ed, smiling a little at his praise. "Maybe you should take it - they'll be more likely to use it if it comes from you." He was trying to maintain a façade of relative normalcy for Ed's benefit - Les didn't want to alienate him with how much his mind had developed, especially not a powerful person like Ed. And even as he thought that, his brain produced a little metaphorical file card breaking down Les' actual reasons for doing that; avoiding alienating a powerful metahuman was part of it, but so was a deep-seated desire to maintain a semblance of his old life and relationships as long as he could, and a genuine human response to praise from authority figures.

"It's not going to work, longterm," Lazenby said. "Lang and Kornfield underestimated the turnout by a factor of ten, at least, and there's probably more coming on day two. Leslie's model ought to buy us some time to work, but it's a bullwark of sand we've raised against an advancing tide. All we can do is insure that the collapse happens in an orderly fashion, which means we can't have any major conflict in the lines this early in the process. So, QED, no counterfeit tickets."
