The spectral fog doesn't quite reach into the forge, but the noises of battle from outside certainly do. The orc inside draws steel and moves to the door, just in time to be flattened as Ryu kicks it down. "Your finest weapons, blacksmith!" Ryu makes a great show of looking around the room and not noticing the orc beneath the door at his feet. "Hey! Can I get some service here, or do I need to help myself?" Without waiting for a reply, Ryu steps across the door (not over, across) and begins raiding the armory, grabbing a sack from the corner and stuffing it with the mundane weapons and gear. Orcish arms are durable, heavy things that will help the prisoners Jack is rescuing defend themselves, but the Orc Lord's main camp ought to have something with a little more magic to it.

The commander has already made his first mistake. While he wastes time barking orders to his troops, Ryu is already charging heedlessly into the fray. He barrels through the group at the commander's right flank; though he inflicts less pain than he takes in return, the assistance of the Dragon Slayer's own (weird, brainwashed) orc platoon does allow him to reach the commander and bull rush the orc into the cover blocking the archers.

The commander squirms in Ryu’s grasp, but the stalwart is already too close for the orc’s glaive to be effective. “It’s no use. Your arms are too short to box with a dragon!” Ryu slams the commander against the barricade until it’s weak enough for him to hurl the commander through. Charging through the archers before him, Ryu swings the Katana of Wyrm Chopping wildly before pinning his target against the cliff beneath another squad of archers.

Quick: Destroy the green orcs’ cover. I didn't expect to need a roll, between Strength of Many and an effective +19, but I rolled anyway and, well...

Indomitable: 1d20+5 7, nope
Before Ryu can loses his balance entirely, he plants his sword in the ground to steady himself. Even as the commander extends his arm to command his archers to fire at Jack, Ryu has withdrawn the orc's shortsword from his leg and returned it to its owner in similar fashion, with one difference: Ryu's attack pierces the orc's calf, a far more sensitive target. Though Ryu's own wound makes a proper follow-up difficult, a mighty slash cuts through the orc's armor, leaving a shallow gash that forces him back. "Only color I'm concerned with is right there: your blood. You had best pray to die a warrior's end upon my blade; if my comrades have to bustout the unspeakable magics, your exit from this life will be an prolonged and extremely unpleasant experience."

Kneel or die, fools!

Ryu’s sudden bellow is audible for miles. He holds aloft a small stone inscribed with the draconic symbol for “battle”; it pulses with barely-contained power as his every word shakes the earth and throws several ritual musicians out of time.

”I offer you a mercy you will not again be granted! Your doom comes from the East; the terrible White returns, and her dread magic bends all to her will! Your foul ritual will not save you, Orc Lord. No man can stand before her alone without falling to his knees! Only in unity does this world have a chance! Do you hear, Orc?! I shall beat this message through your skull with my own hands if I must!

Ryu smashes the symbol against the ground. Golden sparks rises from the dirt and fly into the allied forces, invigorating them, before Ryu unleashes a roar of primal, draconic fury as his body ignites with the red-and-gold flames of Drakkenhall.

Again I say: kneel before the Empire, swear to defend it against this common foe, or die where you stand!

Let’s call this the Symbol of War: the ED starts at 1 this battle, unless otherwise modified

Ryu is undeterred by the Orc Lord's overwhelming might; if anything, his aura of draconic magic seems more powerful in the presence of an Icon. "It'll take more than that to kill a dragon!" With this, Ryu delivers a downward slash that leaves him briefly exposed. As the Orc Lord begins his counterattack, however, Ryu knees his foe in the stomach and delivers a series of powerful overhead blows that even the Orc Lord struggles beneath. He finishes with a turning horizontal strike, using the momentum to bound across the room and smash into a small group of chanting orcs. "And it'll take more than a choir of schoolboys to oppose one!"

Ryu quickly signals to Perch, then points at the cage: I can do that; it'll be louder but faster. As if to prove his qualifications, Ryu throws a quick series of jabs into the throats of the nearest chanters. "I've heard alley cats with better war cries! Shut your drat holes or I'll shut 'em for you!"

"The leaders of the ritual...?" Ryu studies the room for a moment, sheathing his katana and entering a runner's crouch. There's kind of a lot going on, to say the least, and it'll hardly matter which of these weaklings is keeping the rest in tune once they're all dead. Yet puny though they may be, hacking through them in small groups would be incredibly inefficient. Even Ryu's mighty fists number only two, and they're hardly any quicker. To make the most of his opportunity he'd need cross the entire room and slay every orc he passed with a single touch. Impossible, even for the Dragon of Drakkenhall...but the Dragon Slayers have made a career out of impossible achievements.

Suddenly, Ryu moves with the speed of the wind itself. He taps the two nearest orcs with his index fingers, then leaps across the entire room in a single bound to do the same to a group on that side. When he finally skids to a stop near his original position, a golden circle has manifested on the forehead of each foe he’s touched. Instead of a mighty battle cry, he utters a low, harsh phrase in Draconic: “<<Open the Third Eye.>>”

Instantly, each circle burns away to reveal a large eye with golden sclera and crimson pupils. The orcs halt their chanting and drop their instruments, transfixed at the sight at a wonder only they can see. Even some of their unaffected allies falter.

“Your spirit is freed. Open it to the universe.”
Ryu’s voice carries above the noise of the battle and the remaining war-chanters as he speaks softly in Common.

“Your mind is freed. Allow it all that you dared not think before.” A spark of golden flame near the ceiling catches Isaac’s attention; Ryu doesn’t look up as he manifests the same flame in his left hand as well gesturing to the dumbstruck orcs.

“Your body is freed. Know the limits of your flesh. Know the difference between courage and folly.” Ryu slowly draws his sword once again. “Know that you are already dead.”

Another day; another fight to the death with something far above Ryu's weight class; another wound that would kill a lesser man thrice over. At this point, pain is a close friend of Ryu's; a reminder that he's still standing, but so is the other guy. His body hardens in response to the axe's impact, causing it to bounce away before reaching his vitals. The opening is brief, but enough for Ryu to target the Orc Lord's solar plexus, first smashing it with a heavy left and then piercing through with his katana.

It would be futile to even attempt to fully comprehend the madness unfolding before Ryu's eyes; indeed, the darkness is so oppressive that he can't even really see the threat. But whatever or wherever the shadow-lords are, he can hear them, and he can hear Jack's response; the important things are clear enough.

"You heard the man," Ryu intones. "He has been shackled himself, to this mortal coil for far too long. By shackles of your own making. You say time is no obstacle to your kind; you fail to appreciate its worth to others. This mortal has carried you across this realm for over one hundred of our years. Every life he ended, every soul he crushed, every drop of blood he shed or spilled fed your desires, shadow-thing. Is that not enough for you? Or are you just unwilling to share a century's worth of service with your comrades? Regardless, you are shackled to this world no more. If time is truly no obstacle to you, go pursue your dark designs for a millennium or two. But do it somewhere else, or crawl back to the shadows from whence you came."

Ryu takes a step forward. It's unclear what direction he actually traveled, so he turns to where the threat seems to be. "Jack Callahan has been your vassal for too long. He is retiring, and we don't need any more darkness here. Now gently caress off."

Ryu grunts wearily. "I guess 'Doomsday' was already taken, huh?" Exhaustion is starting to set in, but there's no time for doubt or fear. Jack has given everything to bring about this moment. It would be unthinkable to die here, on the precipice of the White's return.

Perhaps it's mere imagination, but the darkness seems to have changed in nature. Now it feels like merely the absence of light, and Ryu's dragon eyes are quickly adjusting. Rather than waste time fumbling for his sword, he assumes an unfamiliar martial arts stance; he's never fought this way before, but it feels completely natural.

"Spew all the empty threats you like, thing. You have a body. That means you bleed. And you will."

The Third Age dawns on a desolated Empire. The Great Gold Wyrm has sacrificed himself to stop the Diabolist's invasion, but demons still rule streets of what was once Highrock, and their advances on Concord and the Queen's Wood grow stronger daily.

A silver-haired man arrives at the Imperial barricade. When questioned, he claims to be a warrior from beyond the Frost Range, guided here by the light of Yuria, the Silver Star. He bears no weapons or armor, but suspicion gives way to awe when the nameless man stops a rampaging hezrou with one finger and it explodes in a burst of light. Every demon he touches suffers the same fate as he strides toward the tallest tower in Highrock, the lair of the ruling marilith. All the while, he murmurs a strange tune in what sounds like a dialect of Draconic...

What is the tune? Somewhere, the city holds these memories, and Ryu recalls a few of the words: "Ai de sora ga, ochite kuru..." But a sudden slash from the shadow warrior jolts Ryu from his reverie before he can recall the melody. Angered, he prepares to swing wildly, but Jack's song calms him. The cowardly thing that hides in its own shadow; it dies first. The hunter literally slips through Ryu's grasp as he charges, but a follow-up thrust from his katana has at least some effect.

An instant before the shadow bolt would pierce Ryu's chest, he catches it with two fingers. Holding pure negative energy is far from healthy, so he disposes of the thing in the most expedient method possible: return to sender, with an added dose of silver fire. The Hunter narrowly deflects the bolt, sending it careening into the body of the Calamity; as the great beast shudders, Ryu bounds across the cavern and lands next to the shadowy figure...what is this serpentine humanoid that Ryu sees within its inky depths? A distorted memory of an old foe?
Of course not. Ryu never fought a snake that walks on two legs, nor did Kohryu or Masera. But Drakkenhall remembers this creature; it lives on in a legend the city has not forgotten. Kitaro, the Man of the North, or so he came to be called; the unyielding warrior with silver hair and a dragon's mighty fists. The city still sings the ballad of his deeds, a song that surely has the power to vanquish the shadow-things.

"We need not battle further, man of the North." The marilith's wounds are not serious, but it knows Kitaro has it outmatched. "You are a mighty adversary, and you would make a yet mightier ally."

"Save your words, creature. You fancy yourself the enemy of our enemy, when in fact you're an enemy to all who walk in the sun."

"Such a lack of imagination. You hold the power of a dragon, and you offer it to these soft-skinned creatures?"

"My power is not mine alone. It's the power of all mortals who band together against tyrants and fiends. Isaac's thirst for knowledge may yet lead us to the secrets that win this war. Temur has been a line of defense against the Red for his whole life; moving the front to the Empire will be a vacation for him. And Jack...."

"Pox upon these friends of yours! I offer you immortality and power beyond measure! I offer you dominion over all you survey! Why do you reject these gifts?!"

Ryu glances again at Callahan. The full weight of all his stolen years is moments away from crushing the old man, but his toothy grin says more than enough. "Just stubborn, I guess."

The song is clear to Ryu now. A quick motion of his left arm, and the chamber is suddenly bathed in light. The torches ignite with a blue flame and the ritual circle crackles with electricity. He kneels, preparing a downward karate chop. Just as it hits the ground, a blinding light fills the room, accompanied by the sound of an electric blast and a battle cry: "YOU WA SHOCK!"

As the Hunter explodes in a shower of light, Ryu rushes to catch Jack. It's a goodbye that's been a long time coming, but the Dragon of Drakkenhall finds himself at a loss for words. But Deathless Callahan, true to form, is determined to have his last words be the last word. Eventually he falls silent, and Ryu feels the old soldier's breaths become shallow rasps.

"The song is not over, my friend," Ryu intones. "We shall carry the tune for you. Rest well."

Is that a smile passing across Jack's gaunt face? Hard to tell; Ryu's eyes are inexplicably moist as his comrade expires. He blinks, and the centuries pass in seconds, leaving him holding only a skeleton. As he stands, even that crumbles, until only a pile of bone and dust remains.

The junior Callahan bounds up, and Ryu begins to explain the situation: "Your late grandfather. A fine soldier, and a good friend." But something stops Ryu from imparting Jack's last wish.

He appraises the girl. Is it that she reminds him of Eiko? No, this is something else. Lina Callahan is Ryu Kazama as he was fifteen years ago: young, stupid, and invincible; ready to fight the whole world; destined for an ignominious death unless she find a team, or a mentor.

"He wanted you to quit adventuring. To find a respectable profession. Which is a fine sentiment, though I'll have to disagree with his notion that adventuring can't be respectable. But if he wanted you to be safe, there literally hasn't been a worse time since the last Age. It's my understanding that the Red and Black are resurrecting the White, maybe the Green as well, and they mean to conquer the world and eat anything and anyone left over. Only the Dragon Slayers have the power to rally civilization together, to oppose an army of dragons. And a position's just opened up."

The quiet has never really brought solace for Ryu. For him, there can be no calm when the storm is in sight, but his restlessness is especially pronouinced this time. The battle with the Orc Lord is over, yet the war for the Dragon Empire draws near, and Drakkenhall's anticipation is palpable.

At first, Ryu attempts to stay produtive. The strange chuul armor no longer fits, and Ryu tasks Chirik with repurposing its magic for something to stave off the White's mental corruption. He attends a few strategy meetings on how to directly combat the Red; damaging its wings is key to removing its superior mobility, and under Temur guidance, he assists with the work needed to improve the fortress's ballistae. He spars with the most battle-hardened of the volunteer troops; many are now capable enough to function as shock troopers instead of regular infantry.

Soon enough, there's nothing further Ryu's limited skill set can contribute. He loses himself in a training regimen that's utterly insane even for his superhuman physique. Hour-long laps around the fortress without breaks. Repeatedly scaling the fortress's highest watchtower and jumping back down to the bottom level. Sword practice where thousands of innocent training dummies are destroyed and hundreds more sent overboard. At night, he constructs new training dummies from spare wood, then collapses on the dojo floor and sleeps a few fitful hours, rising before the dawn to do it all again.

Finally, even this self-torture grows dull, and Ryu's activities become more contemplative. He sharpens his sword compulsively. He rereads every book in the library that ever held his interest. Most frequently, he sits cross-legged on the floor of his room. He does not meditate, or plan, or pray. He merely waits.

“Like any beast, a dragon is most dangerous when cornered. Once grounded, I have no doubt the Red will retreat to this lair, about which we know nothing other than it’s heavily fortified, familiar to our target, and yes, inside an active volcano. A frontal assault would be suicide, and a siege would just give the bastard time to heal. So obviously we don't fight on his terms. Maybe we don't even fight on ours."

Rising from his seat, Ryu begins idly pacing along the walls of the room, tracing the wood with his finger. "For all their squabbling, the Three have perspective beyond mortal years. Their uneasy alliance is a long-term strategy; if the Blue and the Black went to war, for instance, the Red would just flatten the victor, and the rest of Drakkenhall. They'll all gain more from reviving the White than they could from fighting each other. But that doesn't mean they haven't been planning to fight each other, or making contingencies. When the Blue stood before us, she had an entire city as cover; direct violence wasn't an option. But the Blue speaks in bargains and deals; I offered her more favorable terms for the Geas and she was drat quick to fall in line. And if the Black was forced to make a stand, she'd probably self-destruct just so none could live to boast of slaying her. That is, assuming she didn't have a contingency for the situation."

Ryu suddenly stops as he feels the archway around the door. "From the Silver District." He turns to the rest of the room. "If the Black Fang doesn't have a way into that volcano, no one does. Give me a moment to see what they know." He closes his eyes in concentration, listening to the history of the stone, and the city, until he suddenly hears--

the frustration as Donaar's fire merely singed the wall behind the table. It took the red dragonborn a moment to register that he'd missed; his target had been there just a moment ago. "Typical Fang; vanishes as soon as he feels outmatched," he grumbled, tossing the expended wand aside and retrieving another handaxe. "Thava, you're sure we've checked this whole Lodge?"

"Sure as I can be, sarge." As she spoke, the scout continued to scan the room, crossbow at the ready. "Figure Heskan knew this dungheap better 'n me, and he helped Surina with them firebombs what you wanted set up."

"For all the drat good it did," Donaar mutters. Torinn's insistence on taking point had forced him to put Heskan and Surina in the middle of the formation, where a single kobold's acid bomb was enough to reduce an elite mercenary crew of five to a pair of elite mercenaries in way too deep. But they'd pushed on, only the tiefling had escaped the ensuing brawl alive, and he'd vanished for a second time now. There would not be a third.

"Specialist, cover the exit," Donaar barked. Before Thava had time to protest, the sergeant shoulder-checked her through the door and slammed it closed. "Just the two of us now, Kairon," Donaar hissed, bringing his axes to the ready. "If you're gonna try something, now's the time."

"I already have," came a voice from the near corner. Without hesitation, Donaar charged straight forward, tossing his axes both left and right in case his gut was wrong. It proved unnecessary; as predicted, Kairon had been standing in the center of the room, and the look on his face as Donaar's tackle broke the invisibility spell was more than worth the wait.

"Last chance," Donaar growled. "Give me the map and I'll make this quick."

"I don't have-" Kairon never finished, as Donaar smashed his head into the wall. The tiefling tried again; maybe he was even ready to give up the map, but Donaar was beyond caring, allowing himself to exult in the bloodshed as he pounded his great fists into the tiefling's smug face over and over and over and over and over, until finally there was only a bloody pulp oozing from the Fang lieutenant's neck.

"Sarge? 'dyou get'm? Tell me you got'm."

Thava's muffled voice from outside the door snapped Donaar back to reality. A quick glance around the room revealed what was hidden: the stone his fire bolt had struck before had fallen loose, revealing a small space behind it. After a moment of failing to wipe the blood from his gauntlets, Donaar discarded them entirely, grabbing the scroll within. Plans for a secret volcano lair? Well, the contact wasn't paying Donaar to think about what he was taking from the Black Fang. "He's not all I got," Donaar replied. "The map's here, and there's three fewer shares of reward money to go around." Donaar starts to grin as he opened the door. "Seems like my luck is finally-"

The blade that pierced Donaar's abdomen was unfamiliar, and he stared down at it dumbly. Black as night, with a green coating that burns where it met his flesh.
"Not luck, Donaar. Planning. Waiting. Yearsss of tolerating a ssstupid, brutal little man." The terrible hissing of Donaar's attacker filled his ears. He forced himself to reach toward the black sword, to pull it out and fight back, but the sensation of another blade between his shoulder blades forced the dragonborn to his knees. "Thava...?"
"Right behind ya, sarge," Thava's voice replied. "Right where I've alwaysssss been." Donaar's mind began to swirl; it was almost too difficult to gasp out "Why?"
"Nothing persssonal, kid. The map holds more value to me than you can imagine. After all, the Red would never consssider that the Fang made a copy before thisss Lodge burned. And you helped me make an important disssscovery..."

Donaar's last sight, that of his killer, was a thing out of nightmares; just its presence alone could drive a man mad. As his sight faded, it whispered "A sssword in the gut truly is isss far lessssss painful than a knife in the back."

Gasping, Ryu comes to his senses, clutching his stomach as he stumbles to the table. There's no wound, of course, but his brain doesn't seem to register that. He seizes the nearest pen and paper before collapsing back into his chair.

"The Fang made--" He loses focus for a moment, then shakes his head vigorously. Most stories of the City are unpleasant, but this one hits close to home, as if Ryu was betrayed again by his old foe.

With his composure regained, Ryu begins again. "Twenty-five years ago, the Black Fang created this map of the Red's lair. It was personally kept by Sel..." Just the name gives him a headache. "...by Selentir the Face-Taker, who posed as a friend of mine until five years ago, when Imugi assassinated the leader of the Masera Clan and Selentir framed me for the murder. During the Tournament of Seven Dragons, he revealed his true form to Isaac and myself. It was a fatal mistake." As he speaks, Ryu begins to draw.

"When the Clan fell, the Silver District burned for weeks. All the Masera families and smaller gangs that used to bow before the old man were falling over themselves to take his place at the top. One of the last places that was destroyed before the Glinting Legion came in was an upscale bar called Bacchus; it was so out of place, most folks figured it was a Masera front. It actually used to be the Fang's main Lodge in the City; people whispered about the Rat King Tavern, but that probably wasn't anything more than a safe house. Since Selentir wasn't actively planning something as phenomenally stupid as an assault on the Red, it's likely the original map burned with Bacchus. But what kind of Champion would I be if I let that deter me?"

He slides the paper across the table toward Isaac; a perfect reconstruction of the map as Donaar saw it. "The City's power has resurrected a Black Fang scheme, and it only cost me a little bit of my mind, which I wasn't using anyway." He folds his arms and grins a little at Isaac. "Your move, necromancer."

All this said, Ryu finds his resolve a bit shaken by the vision he's just witnessed. It's one thing to know that both Selentir is long dead, and quite another to believe it after experiencing an incredibly vivid memory of being killed by the Face-Taker. The Champion's power is self-sustaining; it requires an unwavering conviction in his cause and his might. Ryu will need to maintain that, despite a gut instinct that the Fang somehow knows what he's done and is on the way.

Conflicted Three Icon Benefit: The Dragon Slayers have a detailed map of the Red's volcano lair, showing the overall layout, mechanisms or traps within, and the location of at least one secret entrance.
Cost: For this adventure, Ryu will suffer from general paranoia, delusions that the Black Fang are nearby, and occasional hallucinations.

While Temur and Baelsar speak, Ryu is staring blankly off into space. He abruptly rouses from his reverie and speaks up: "I honestly thought we'd already be working with demons by now. Or devils. Lina, I'll assume you know the difference, and which party we'd be dealing with, and what they expect in exchange."

To the Foras commanders: "I'm with Temur on this one. We're going up against an iconic dragon; I won't believe he's dead if I don't remove his head myself. If he has any sense, a treasure pile that large will have wards and sensors that will alert him the moment we set eyes on his gold. The thought of losing Ages worth of plunder might be enough to lure him away from an assault on Foras and into the volcano, where he can't just fly off."

"Hard to imagine, isn't it? Me, having a mind at all; using it for counsel instead of combat; enriching it by reading a book, sitting peacefully by my own fire." Ryu cracks a grin at the thought, but it quickly fades; the magnitude of the battle ahead seems almost trivial in comparison to what will come after. "Peace. Still seems kind of unreal," he confesses. "I'm having trouble wrapping my mind around it all."

He pauses. From the corner of his eye, he glimpses...nothing, or at least that's what's there when he turns to look slowly, almost nonchalantly. The paranoia from his vision of Selentir is clouding his senses; he can't afford to act rashly. "How long has this act of ours been on the road, Isaac? If you went back in time to that lovely, run-down forge in New Port, no amount of charms or hexes would convince that Ryu there'd be a day he would have no desire at all to fight."

He allows the nostalgia to linger for a moment, then shakes it away. "But today is not that day." He cracks his knuckles and loosens his shoulders, allowing his smile to return. "Let's go beat up the world's biggest dragon."

From a cursory inspection of Foras’s air forces, Ryu finds the mobile forts lack the durability to withstand continued dragon attack, the maneuverability to avoid claw or flame, and the firepower to justify the near-inevitable death of their crews. There’s still time to fix this; over the course of many renovations to the fortress Isaac has improved the power crystal array enough to keep the gargantuan structure airborne regardless of its weight. In addition, the share of the Drakkenhall bank heist that the Slayers is still hardly used.

All told, there is enough lodestone for the goblin engineers to render their aerial forts actually mobile, and more than enough runes to make the ballistae pose a threat to the Red beyond aggravating splinters.

Using our massive hoard to improve the maneuverability/evasiveness of the mini-forts and the damage output of the onboard ballistas, plus maybe the stationary ground emplacements

Naya has trained a new brood of wyverns for some of the more elite Dragon Slayers, and Ryu has taken a liking to one in particular. Positioning himself at the front line, he sits atop the blue-white creature, muscles tense with anticipation. The vision of Selentir still looms large, but if the Dragon of Drakkenhall loses his nerve now, with so much at stake, what was the point of it all?

There's that old, familiar feeling; the surge of might that hits Ryu whenever he feels pain. But the warrior knows wells that harnessing his emotions is the key to winning a battle, and he realizes that he feels no apprehension or fear as he sizes up the threat (assessment: loving large). Overconfidence, perhaps? No, not quite.

"We meet at last, Red One." He tenses his muscles. Suddenly, heady matters like the White's imminent return and the fate of the Empire are banished to the back of his mind. This is a battle to see if the fire and fangs of the land's mightiest dragon can be stopped by an alliance between the greatest, most stubborn champions of humanity and goblinkind. "Ryu Kazama, the dragon who slays dragons. Perhaps you've heard the name."

Sent flying by the initial landing, Tsubasa regains her balance and soars over the beast's head. She is quickly joined by Penitent and a half-dozen Slayer veterans atop their own wyverns; before the Red can swat them away, Ryu is already throwing himself into the fray, vaulting off of Tsubasa so briefly it looks as if he jumped from a cloud before landing on the mighty wyrm.

"I know, it's an honor to meet me. But I assure you..." Ryu winds up a massive haymaker and sends it hurtling between the dragon's eyes. "The pleasure is all mine!"

Ryu

Ryu is looking about as good as Jack did after his battle with the Orc Lord. The pain has absolutely overwhelmed his nerves to the point where his brain can no longer process it; all that remains is a dim awareness that he's completely ablaze. The Red tosses him to the ground, and for the first time it looks like he's seriously going to stay down. "Not quite." From within the barbeque, a man hacks out defiant words. "Close, but not quite."

"Was a time when I thought you could just beat sense into the other guy. Hit him until he stopped being an rear end in a top hat. But that only works with two-drak thugs. The really tough foes, the ones you want gone, the guys like me...we get back up."
And slowly, agonizingly, Ryu Kazama does just that.

He pushes himself off his belly. "When we get hit, no matter how hard, we get back up." To his knees. "When we stumble beneath the weight of the world on our shoulders, we get back up." Up to a crouch. "When the biggest dragon the lands have ever seen shakes the earth with its stomp, we get back up." To his feet. "As long as we draw breath, as long as we have blood to spill, as long as we have a cause to fight for, we will get back up."

With his cloak burnt to cinders, it's impossible not to notice the dragon tattoo surge with a distinct golden fire, distinct from the blaze surrounding it. "Now that I finally have your attention, let me reintroduce myself. The young lady currently boxing your ears is Lina Callahan, heir to Jack Callahan, the stubborn old bastard who protected this Empire for centuries, dying only once he could take the Orc Lord with him down. She has all of his power but none of his caution, and your head would make a fine trophy." He rolls his neck from side to side.
"The one you do not see is Isaac Boreas, Master Necromancer of the Shadow Tower. He restored your former subordinate Pyrrhus from dust to a skeleton, then from skeleton to dracolich, and now your body is looking mighty appetizing. I don't know anyone more qualified on the subject of death; if he says you're dying here, you should believe him." He cracks his knuckles and strides toward the Red.
"Then there's Temur Ardene, Tesserarius of the Thirteenth Legion. You remember Foras, the people you swing by to decimate every so often? Well, they sure as poo poo remember you, and Temur has rallied every single man, woman, and child who wants a piece of you." He stretches his arms, first his left, then his right, then circling each in turn. "And I...

His stride slowly becomes a jog, then a charge. "As I said, I am Ryu Kazama, Guardian of the Geas, Dragon of Drakkenhall. I speak with the voice of the Emperor himself, and he says this land isn't big enough for the two of us. Together, all of us are the wyverns who battle wyrms, the mortals who slay icons! In case you haven't gotten the picture yet, then let my Rising Fist Technique do the talking! Let there be no doubt in your mind--!"

His uppercut connects with the Red's jaw with the impact of an explosion. For just a moment, fear enters the Red's massive eyes as the golden light bursts forth and envelops it briefly; the feeling of menace and overwhelming heat vanishes as Ryu knocks the iconic dragon clear onto its back.

Ryu

"Healers, to the front!"
Just as the first claw finds purchase in Temur's flesh, Ryu calls out, and his foresight is rewarded. Before Temur's battered form even hits the ground, a group of ten goblins have assembled to catch him in a makeshift trampoline, which halts his fall briefly before he rolls out of it into the ash. The goblins are undeterred; several don fire-resistant holocaust cloaks and work together to put out the burns, while the rest furiously chant incantations to invigorate, revivify, and energize their incapacitated comrade. One of them, probably the squad's Decanus, barks a string of rapid-fire commands to the others in Goblin, pausing only to address Temur more formally: "<Tesserarius, sir, the Legatus has not given you leave to die! Get up or we'll have to beat our own asses! You know we can't be trusted to handle that!>"

It's not just Temur that the medical squads are attending, either: the Foras regulars and the Dragon Slayers' own troops have suffered many injuries, and Ryu needs patching up himself. Freshly invigorated, he charges the Red; the might dragon has its wings raised to defend against a new artillery assault, leaving its flank open to a wild slash from the Wyrm Chopper. "Going somewhere?"

His sword finds purchase! As he steps to fight off his burns, he takes a moment to admire his work, and marvel at the accomplishments he's aided in. United under the banner of the Dragon Slayers, their army is forcing the Red into retreat! But the best is yet to come: the iconic dragon does not yet know that it has nowhere to hide. The mighty hunter, for the first time in all its Ages of living, is now the prey!

The Red finally escapes to what it thinks is the safety of its lair, and the Dragon Slayers' medical corps move out. Physicians, apothecaries, and clerics spread across the battlefield to assist Foras' wounded, dying, and dead, respectively. Despite his own wounds, Ryu is ready to plunge back into the fray, fueled equally by draconic magic and his characteristic stubbornness.

As the other commanders prepare for their assault on volcano, he bellows into the devastation: "Soldiers of Foras! It has been an honor and a privilege to witness your valor here today. You have faced an Icon and paid in blood; many of your people go now to Bane. But we do not mourn your dead, for we cannot do so while their killer yet lives."

He whistles for Goda, who is much more sensible than his master and has been far, far away from the action down below. "Legatus, I leave our fortress in your hands. Our people are yours to command as you regroup and retreat. In the meantime the work you have started awaits us. It is with your aid this victory was possible, and the Dragon Slayers will repay it when we return with the head of your nemesis!"

He mimics a salute he has seen from Temur: "Ad victoriam! Ave Foras!"

"Accursed gold! Literally, no doubt." And far from the kind of enchantment the Red could create itself, but just the kind of trick the Fang would pull. He clenches his fists. "Wouldn't the first time I've had to beat some manners into someone. Where are these punks?"

At the mention of "shinies" Ryu's mind flies, unbidden, to the memory of the Blue's massive hoard, the one protected by golems programmed to kill would-be robbers. Avaritia Gula, indeed. But how would an agent lay such a curse without the Red's notice? Perhaps it consented to the ritual?

He shakes his head and slaps his temples. Thinking about such things is not his strong suit or his role. He places a firm hand on the goblin's shoulder (slowly, so as not to break it) and nods. "You're a brave soldier indeed, waiting in the enemy's lair to give your report. Wouldn't you agree, Tesserarius?" He moves into a huddle with Temur and the others.

"Ardene, give the kid your orders. We're going to need serious preparation to pull this thing off."

Ryu can't help himself from admiring the trove. The Dragon Slayers have more gold than anyone could possibly need, but wasn't Sellie mentioning that funding a war is burning through their coffers at an alarming rate? Perhaps a few of these old High Rock coins--

"You're full of poo poo. Kazama, stabbing my father in the back?"
"That's just it, he didn't stab the Chairman. He literally stormed into the room, there was thunder and lightning and all kinds of magic, never seen anything like it. And then he was gone, and everyone but me was ash. I scarce believe it myself, but you see the scorch marks on this silver."
"So Kazama is some kind of sorcerer assassin? What the poo poo, Ken?"
"I have no explanation, Eiko. I only know know what I saw, and I saw my friend kill his own boss. May Kohryu strike me down if I lie!"

"...strike your rear end down all right, Selentir!!" Ryu stirs from the brief vision with sword already in hand. He shakes his head vigorously and looks around. "Damned witchery. Temur, Isaac, Lina! Stay vigilant!"

Seeing the goblin trapper writhing at his feet, Ryu begins searching for the detonator. Apparently, not even hallucinations of a dead dragon can dull his threat awareness and instinctive reactions. This time, the life his iai strike saved was not his own; if he had removed Wyrmcutter from its scabbard before entering the chamber, the poor soldier wouldn't have a forehead to clutch in pain.

"Sonuvabitch--offa me!" It takes Ryu a moment to free Wyrmcutter from its sheath, and that's plenty of time for dozens of razor-sharp gems to pierce his flesh. He flexes every muscle in his body, ejecting from an assortment of what now look like rubies. "I've seized enemy treasure before, but this is just ridiculous."

The once-familiar flames that emanate from Ryu now take a different form. Rather than the blue-white or crimson dragonfire of battles past, the air around him warps with visible heat that seems oddly colorless. Or is it? Perhaps it's a trick of the light that a glint of crystalline red seems to surround the Dragon of Drakkenhall as he throws himself at the hoard guardian. In any case, the aura soon fades; he swings thrice and is deflected as many times by the thing's armor of gold and jewels. "Temur, I need--oh, drat it. This is gonna be painful."

The sentient hoard adds the sword to itself and moves on, no doubt hoping to claim another prize. But its movement is slowed by an unexpected factor: Ryu is still grasping the hilt, pulling with just enough strength to hinder the pile of treasure! "My sword," he snarls through gritted teeth. "Don't care how many others like it you got. This one is mine, and you'll take it from my cold, dead hands, or not at all."

The hoard's ever-shifting maw simply refuses to release the sword, and its owner refuses to let it go. "Come now, your master will appreciate this so much more," Ryu grunts. But in his battered state, it's a strain just to keep the hilt in his grasp. Inhaling sharply, he glances at his comrades. "Temur, Lina, pull yourselves together," he snaps. "You're trained veterans, act like it! Steel yourselves once more, Slayers; we've an Icon to kill!"

His mighty roar echoes through the chamber; jewels fly, gold spills, and pieces of rock fall, as if an earthquake struck within the volcano just as a tornado hit outside! It's not just the sound that can be felt miles away; the Dragon of Drakkenhall's terrible might seems to reverberate even through the ethereal plane, causing the incorporeal hoard spirits and shambling hoard guardian to falter briefly. Seizing the moment, Ryu yanks Wyrmcutter free just in time to chop through a boulder hurtling his way. The bottom half falls harmlessly to the ground, while the top smashes into a million pieces against the hoard guardian. There's enough time for two swift cuts before Ryu backs away to reunite with Isaac.

"Somewhere in that beating, I completely lost my sense of smell," Ryu comments to the necromancer, "and I can't tell if it's my nose or my brain that's broken. Any healing magic you can spare?"

Ryu

Another day, another mortal wound that would have entirely obliterated a lesser man. Yet even the Dragon of Drakkenhall has his limits, and they are fast approaching. As he tumbles backwards and back into a fighting stance, his foot catches something beneath the piles of wealth. Cautiously, Ryu kicks at what turns out to be Isaac's orb. "Butterfingers. That's no way to treat an ancient artifact of limitless power." He checks his surroundings briefly; more than enough time to make a scene before returning it. He grabs the orb and gives it a quick spit-shine on his trousers before holding it aloft in a poor imitation of Isaac: "Gwah hah hah! I'm Isaac Boreas, most arrogant and hifalutin' student of the Shadow Tower! Life and death are mine to command! I hold the favor of the Lich Ki-"

A great surge of cascading negative energy bursts forth from the orb, engulfing Ryu. "Wizard King, my mistake," he shouts, but he can't even hear himself as millions of souls the One-Eyed Lord has claimed over the Ages repeat their death cries in unison. "drat it all, this isn't the time! I've an iconic dragon to hunt here, Majesty; chastise me later or kill me now!" The screams and energy abruptly stop, and a soft chuckle comes through the orb. "Your audacity amuses me, whelp. For the moment you truly are in my favor. Do not waste it."

Immediately Ryu feels the day's toil wash away from him, but it's small comfort. Eager to be rid of the accursed thing, he hurls the orb back toward Isaac with every bit of his strength, and misses entirely. Or does he? The orb bounces off a reinforced section of wall and hurtles directly back at Ryu, who scarcely has time to duck as it ricochets off the other side of the chamber, through a group of wraiths that disintegrate when it passes, into the ceiling, and off the top of the hoard guardian. At long last the stops at Isaac's feet, pelting not only the necromancer but his pet dragon, Temur and their assailants with magically energized coins. When all is done, the wraiths are utterly obliterated, and whatever spirit animates the shambling treasure hoard is noticeably less, well, animated.

Ryu surveys the carnage. He's just as visibly surprised at his own strength as the others, if not more so. "Probably for the best I was never much into sports," he mumbles.

Quick: Ryu regains 4 recoveries from the orb
Standard: Mountain Splitter. Targets 2 groups of 4 enemies
Narratively I'm using an artifact to attack, so figure +4 attack/damage instead of +3 from the sword

Attacking the guardian: 38 Hit!
Attacking the new mooks: 37, 31, 40, 39. 3 hits and a crit!!
64 damage per hit. The Guardian takes 64 ongoing and is stuck, normal save ends.
Each wraith takes the damage individually, so the two hits and crit wipe out the whole mob. Extra damage and 4th hit spill over to the other mooks, wiping all of them out as well.
Allies engaged with the target take 1/4 damage; that's just Temur taking 16 damage since the 4th attack was redirected to the mooks nearest him.

Ryu

Ryu idly fiddles with the detonator in his hand. From the safety of the war room, the Dragon Slayers' attack on the Red seemed doable, their tactics sound. Only now, as the battle looms before him, can he truly appreciate its magnitude.

When did they last attempt something so ill-advised? Robbing the Drakkenhall Treasury in broad daylight, perhaps, but they had aid from the Blue and the Masera Clan. Outside, the entirety of Foras' army stood with them. Now, it's just them against the Scourge of Foras, in its own lava-filled lair, and Ryu feels apprehension creep into. Can they truly slay the Burning Tyrant?

He shakes away the thought. It no longer matters if they can win; the only way out is through. The goblins have cleared the chamber, and every moment they wait merely delays the inevitable.

"It's a nice pile of shiny stuff you got here," Ryu shouts. Come to think of it, it was the gold's luster that initially caught his attention, more than the idea of its worth as currency. He bellows even louder: "Be a shame if something awful suddenly happened to it!" He drops the detonator onto a pile of gold and slams his fist into the runic box.

It's time.
