The tastiest things I had in Japan were ramen and gyoza and I'm lucky enough to live near a couple really good ramen places that serve both in Canada. Pretty much all the other Japanese food ends up being tastier when made in an izakaya here because it's seasoned more to match western taste.

Also it's apparently really hard to get a salad that doesn't have meat, mayo and daikon piled on top of it.

My problem with a lot of Japanese food is the lack of proper seasoning, some of it was alright though.

The thing I miss the most are the vending machines. I thought they were kinda funny at first but man, being able to get some ice cream from a vending machine was nice.

Great country to visit for sure though, I want to go back sometime.

e: the strawberry cheesecake Kitkat bars were also pretty good

Don't most meals come with a tray of seasonings to add? Soy sauce, spicy chili paste etc.

Though now that I think about it a lot of the food and travel shows that feature Japan focus on sushi, up and coming chefs, and local delicacies/street food.
