I would say 13-2 is the one to play. 13 takes too long spinning its wheels. 13-2 is nicely paced and has the cool monster party member aspect as well.

The downside is that 13-2 is not terribly well balanced and the pet mechanic is tedious if you really want to do anything with it compared to 13's pretty well balanced challenge level due to being super linear. 13-2's major characters are also awful except for Liam O'Brian hamming it up with everything he's got while 13's party is pretty great, especially Sazh. 13-2 does have chronobind, though.

Lightning Returns is absolutely the strongest of the three and doesn't really require having played the other two at all.

The Final Fantasy series is one of my favorite series, but when I picked up FFXIII, I couldn't get over how bad the storytelling was.

I strongly disagree. 13-2 felt like an improvement in every way.

Anyway. the more I play Lightning Returns the more I like it. I have a lot of respect for Square Enix. They listened to a lot of the complaints with 13 (like linearity, no towns, long tutorials, etc.) and really improved on it with 13-2 and Lightning Returns. It's really strange to me that 13-2 and LR got middling reviews because they're honestly a lot of fun and do plenty of things right.

There is a 45+ minute segment in 13-2 where you are forced into a random encounter every 3 steps that takes longer to load than it does to beat. 13-2 is fun but the thing I like about 13 was how well balanced every single battle was and the non-linear design of 13-2 made this go away and I really didn't like it as a result

I can understand this. I explored a lot in 13-2 so my experience was generally either I set foot in the wrong area and get instantly obliterated (I don't know why Games posters have a hardon for this as a mechanic but they do) or I steamroll the enemies because I explored places I "wasn't supposed to" or whatever. I guess the flip side is in 13 you have people like my insanely AIDS ridden friend who refused to fight random battles and then cried that the game was too hard. Although I think he would find a way to hate any game.

13-2's is good, from what I've heard. I will probably buy it this weekend since it's on sale. I already own the console version but 13-2 is good and fun.

tho the other guy is right too, in most of 13-2 the enemies are about the same difficulty level, not relative to you

13-2 has QTEs because after 13 they did a ton of american focus testing to try to figure out what the hell they did wrong and one of the biggest things they learned is that americans love QTEs

Yeah, but the QTEs in 13-2 are pretty cool. I don't know why QTEs are so popular but from what I remember 13-2 QTEs are like you doing some really epic action movie/anime stuff instead of just like "press X to punch someone".

they are like the best possible version of qtes, they warn you fully before hand that a cutscene will have them, you dont fail anything if you miss them, they give you bonus items for succeeding

Lol the QTEs are badass because they take place in epicly crafted cinematics where sarah and Noel are doing sick action moves and if you hit O correctly a HUGE NUMBER flies out of the enemy even though there is absolutely no context or anything for what that number represents
