The more I think about it, the more depressing it is to me that the same band that put out Lonesome Crowded West, The Moon & Antarctica, Long Drive and Building Nothing Out Of Something is putting out boring poo poo that I don't feel connected to in any way now

Prog stuff like what, Trucker's Atlas?

That's some of my favorite stuff of theirs v I used to love watching live performances of theirs from like 2001 and earlier when they'd go into extended improv jams on Cowboy Dan and Doin' The Cockroach and the like. Got me excited because I never knew exactly what I was gonna hear but I knew it would probably be rad. I'd be totally cool with them doing an album with more stuff like that (but obviously different material that doesn't sound like a bunch of stuff they've already done), but they seem to have abandoned that concept more or less.

The Moon & Antarctica and Lonesome Crowded West were schizophasic rants against vague existential dread; these last three songs are all explicitly about how mankind's apathy and complacency is slowly killing off itself and everything around it.

For real though, I've listened to The Ground Walks twice and it's a better effort than the rest of the new songs, but it's not the type of song that I feel like I'm really going to want to listen to over and over again for a long time to come. If that's the best they've got to offer nowadays, then cool, at least they're kinda trying. That's more than I heard with the other songs. But it's not exactly my bag.

So since none of the songs released so far have impressed me much and there are still 11 more to go...I don't know if that gives me hope that maybe they got the worse songs out of the way to begin with and the rest will be better or makes me dread listening to an entire album of this stuff. I'm going to do it anyway because it's Modest Mouse, but if the rest of the songs are like the ones we've heard so far, I can't guarantee that I'm going to listen to the whole album more than once in my life.

Other People's Lives loving rules. If I had to cut one of the two, I'd cut Working On Leaving The Living, but I'd rather not have to cut either because I love both of those songs.

I agree that Out Of Gas could be cut and you wouldn't miss anything, but I think Long Distance Drunk and poo poo Luck are essential to the album. The flow does kind of get broken up, though. Maybe the album could've benefitted from a different track order. Keep Teeth Like God's Shoeshine at the beginning and It's All Nice at the end, though. That's essential.

LCW would definitely feel like it was missing something without poo poo Luck. Long Distance Drunk isn't as easy to make a strong case for, but poo poo Luck feels like a short but sweet mission statement for Modest Mouse in the best way, much like What People Are Made of on Moon & Antarctica. Yeah it's different in structure from other songs on that album, but I very strongly think it's one of the best few songs on an album filled with great songs.

e: Wait, I'm listening to the title track again and I don't hear it anymore. Nevermind. I really like poo poo In Your Cut. Pistol, though...I'm not sure what the hell to think about that song. Ansel's pretty good too. And fuuuuck, Pups To Dust owns a whole lot. I wish the whole album was more songs like that. Same with Be Brave. God Is An Indian And You're An rear end in a top hat wouldn't have felt out of place at all on Parlour Tricks. The Tortoise And The Tortoise is probably one of the best songs they've done since Moon & Antarctica. I have a feeling that I'm gonna be selecting certain songs from this album to get synced to my phone so I can listen to them pretty often and then the remaining songs that I don't care about, I'll just never listen to those again. Or very rarely at least. I gotta listen to the album again to be sure, because the first listen was honestly kind of disorienting. The album's all over the place, with a mix of both some legitimately classic Modest Mouse tunes but also some songs that I'd be perfectly fine with never hearing again. They played Lampshades On Fire on Fallon tonight. They've got a female keyboardist/vocalist and Isaac was wearing a collard shirt and had his hair slicked back, so that was kind of weird to see. Also they did this little mini jam part at the end of the song that's not on the studio version that sounded very out of tune.

Tonight they played Be Brave on the new Late Late Show. That was a pretty interesting song choice, and it came out sounding way cooler than, say, Lampshades on Fire from Fallon a few nights ago.
