It's a story-heavy start for sure. It settles into more of a rhythm once you get to the Evil Forest a few hours in so if you're close to that I'd suggest pushing through. FF9 is my fave game of all time, I love the characters and the soundtrack in particular. However if you''re not interested in JRPG stories it may not be for you. I'm not sure why you'd want to play it in the first place when that's the main selling point.

I think the problem might be that I am getting older, and I enjoy video games differently--and a lot less--than I used to.

I used to love jrpg's. In fact, FF7 and FF8 are two of my favorite games of all time, and FF9 has all the stuff I loved in those games, but it's not clicking with me for some reason. Nonetheless I am about to make the weed noise and fire it up again, so we'll see if it hooks me.

I still like some of the old ones (like Chrono Trigger or FF7), but I haven't been interested in any jRPG in years. They all just seem so lifeless and empty. Also the writing is usually not my thing.

my fav JRPGs of the last 10 years have all been Earthbound clones. LISA: The Painful, Undertale, and Jimmy and the Pulsating Mass. makes me feel old that i cant seem to find modern JRPGs to connect with...

unless we count Xenoblade Chronicles and Dragon's Dogma. i freakin loved those games but theyre action RPGs not old school turnbased

wait almost forgot SMT. i still dig that they stick to turnbased combat and continue to iterate on it

i quite enjoyed the Spirits Within! i've always been a sucker for when FF leans into sci-fi over fantasy, though. it really was a shame it didn't do well... i would've been interested in seeing more done with that particular Final Fantasy, but I guess Square just wants to pretend it never happened.

On the other hand, I like how it is a true old school Final Fantasy in that it's a self contained one-and-done deal. Not like FF7 and its side stories and movies, or FF10 and its two sequels. Or FF13 and its two sequels. Or FF15 and ....

I buy games and watch streamers beat them because otherwise I would spend an eternity beating it. I insist on using higher difficulties on initial playthroughs of fps and platforming games because I still (mistakenly) believe that I have my reflexes from playing ctf quake and nes contra 25 years ago. On the other hand, I beat Celeste (just the main story, though) and doom 2016 in the past few years so maybe there is some truth to that belief. I am certainly playing smarter, not harder, than I used to.

Play Celeste once a day. Keep yourself sharp.

played a handful of small things. Qomp was fun but too short and easy for how good of an idea it was. played Outside In with a friend last night and it was very hectic and fun but it’s early access so there weren’t as many levels out as I hoped. played Sagebrush and liked it but was upset about something not included in the story that I guess I shouldn’t spoil

It's good because it's really a FF game first and an MMO second. The story in the base game is pretty good, but the expansions are some of the best FF stories I've seen.

I played it very briefly on release, but didn't continue. My friend summed up his experience with it thusly: "I would get home from work, log on, then go gather wood, mine ore, (gather crafting materials, you get the picture) etc., just so I could afford the next upgrade to my house. Suddenly it dawned on me, this is exactly like a job. Am I paying a subscription to go to work? That day I closed my account and uninstalled the game and never looked back."

what kinda rich bougie person can afford a house on their own in FFXIV, which is a very good game?

Paging nut (an expert on The Sinking City)

as long as ur good with very repetitive combat, everything else about the sinking city was pretty fun. Admittedly, at some point I stopped doing side missions because they got repetitive as well. But it was like the game gave me more than what I wanted of something that I enjoyed for the main storylength

also, imo increasing the difficulty on combat is fruitless and just punishing urself unnecessarily since early game even easy combat is a slog. Max detective difficulty is kinda hokey too and I'd suggest the normal difficulty cuz it'll tell u when ur done in an area

Based on the above I got the Outer Worlds, although I will honestly probably stop playing video games once I am IMMUNE and can go outside again.

Also I am still playing Final Fantasy 9 and it has really opened up, with fewer exposition dump cutscenes, and I am enjoying it quite a bit now. Gonna play some right now, but I am super drunk so we'll see how this goes. Prolly gonna get lost on the overworld map for a while

I just watched the new Mortal Kombat movie on HBO Max and it's a fun time. Friend of mine is going with his wife to see in a theater and I'll bet that'll be a fun time to cheer out loud with an audience for the cool super moves and fatality references. Some movies are def a different experience in a big theater with others.

Still totally worth checking out at home if it's still not a great idea to visit a theater near you right now.
