Yeah that video looks kind of weird and staged to me. I think they'd make decent pets, though you'd have to pet-proof your house somewhat. And they'd probably go stir crazy indoors? And you'd have to completely enclose your yard because they can climb anything. But look at this lil guy.![]() ![]()

It's from some sort of educational zoo show with a segment where one of the hosts would spend a day living with a wild animal or two. The beaver and cheetah episodes were also pretty amazing. The original videos seem to have been taken down though so now all that's left are edited-down reuploads of the red panda one. It's missing the parts where she winds up having to eat standing so the red pandas couldn't get into her food, the red pandas take turns exploring the closet while she tries to get them out, and they discover how to turn on the lights in the middle of the night. EDIT: Also the parts where they actually talk about the red panda - she wraps her hands around one and it squeezes through no problem, they're basically all fluff. Thanks Silver Alicorn or SA. I feel more aware Some red pandas will drop their tail when pursued by a predator, as a decoy so they can escape. c/d

The Cincinnati snow video of the red pandas playing is the most amazing video. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DSehQsYU9h4

If I ever encountered something that cute irl I would die.

I went to the Detroit zoo last summer but the day we went their red pandas were basically chilling in a little cave sleeping where we couldn't see them. It was disappointing. The more local zoo has a smaller, but less closed off exhibit that was easier to see them, but I'd really love one of those red panda petting zoo style exhibits some time. Unfortunately I don't think any zoo within a reasonable distance of me has such an event.

It costs like $300 to book an encounter anyway so you may as well file it under expensive vacation ideas. Short of that they are most active in the early morning, or feeding time.

kalstrams posted:Just come with apples to exhibit. Please do not do this. Not even as a joke. Zoo animals are on special diets. In particular, there are suppliments and sometimes medications mixed with their food. Beyond the danger of outside food being potentially toxic, bearing disease, and being indigestable, at best all you will do is make it harder for the keepers to keep these fragile idiot animals alive for another day. Also, if you get caught, you get yelled at and kicked out and we revoke your membership. Yeah, that includes you, creepy girrafe man. \/\/\/ SERIOUS ZOO BIZNESS \/\/\/ Suspect Bucket fucked around with this message at 15:49 on Feb 23, 2015 |

I wonder if we should start a list of zoos offering this sort of thing. I've found a number of them: Utica Zoo - Utica, NY: (they also offer a lion encounter if you have $1000 and balls large enough to count as light trucks http://uticazoo.org/visit/animal-encounters/ Ross Park Zoo - Binghamton, NY: (they say "currently unavailable" but don't elaborate on what's going on) http://www.rossparkzoo.com/get-involved/wild-encounters/ Good Zoo - Wheeling, WV: http://www.oglebay-resort.com/goodzoo/animal_encounter.html Pittsburgh Zoo - Pittsburgh, PA: (they charge way more than the others at $350) http://www.pittsburghzoo.org/Tickets/Tours
