Translated from German, Evening News Report

"... victim's name has been confirmed as Cristophe Garb, recently returned to Berlin after spending several years living abroad. Anonymous sources in the police department say that the suspect's identification papers are American with the name Yeezus West, but that they highly doubt this is his real identity. His true identity may never be known, as West took his own life while in custody..."

~

FROM: Berlin Attaché <ber_att@cia.gov>
TO: European Operations Director, Central Intelligence Agency
SUBJECT: Cristophe Garb

Sir, as you may be aware, one of our agents, Cristophe Garb, was assassinated this morning. Based on the identity of the shooter, I believe that this is a direct result of data lost during The Breach last month. Garb's identity was in the information stolen from the mainframe and the shooter, a Yeezus West, is one of the hackers suspected of the incident but later exonerated due to the capture of the "true" perpetrators.

Before we could question him, West died in his cell. Slashed wrists. This was a cover-up, played to look like a suicide.

~

FROM: European Operations Director <euro_op_dir@cia.gov>
TO: Berlin Attaché
SUBJECT: RE: Cristophe Garb

Find out what's going on. Use our NATO Intelligence agreements to get German and American operatives in the area to find out who the hell's targeting us.

This is a 14-player mafia game, with very traditional roles. It is a sequel to the last game I ran, both in terms of flavor and in terms of lessons learned. As such, while it's intended to run as a small, fast paced game, the number of players has been increased to be more forgiving.

The thread will follow standard mafia rules:
  • Day one will last for 2 days, and all subsequent day phases and night phases will last for 1 day. Night phase will last at least 12 hours. If I'm not here, deadlines are floating.
  • Lynches will require a majority vote.
  • No out-of-thread communication, except for that allowed by role PMs.
  • Don't edit your posts.
  • No quoting mod PMs.
  • No fake day actions, truth or dare, Toxxing, or other things that go against the spirit of mafia.
  • The thread will be open at night. Feel free to talk amongst yourselves or not as you see fit.
  • If a player has less posts than me plus votefinder at the end of a day, that player will be placed on warning for lurking. If a player on warning does not post at least the median number of posts made by living players in the next game day, they will be modkilled. I will not replace lurkers, and if someone lurks excessively they risk being banned from future games.

His name was mr.capps, and he was officially the American attaché. Unofficially, he organized the American intelligence efforts in Berlin.

When people think of intelligence briefings, they think of dark rooms in faceless buildings. What they don't think of is hotel chain conference rooms, but their rental is cheap and people stay away except to make sure the coffee urns are full. Oh, and free coffee. Which is why capps stands in front of 14 intelligence operatives at a cheap podium, next door to an over-65 swingers club meeting.

"As you all should know, two days ago a man named Christo..."

BOOOOOM!!

It turns out, a cheap podium is a great place for a bomb. But the only people cognizant of this meeting were in the room, and as they handled the ensuing police presence and reached up the chain, everyone knew the same thing. The task force was compromised. Someone didn't want them looking into the assassination of Cristophe Garb.

"I know what your analysts are saying, Steve, that it had to be elements inside the team that planted the bomb. If we want to keep Langley happy, we need to demonstrate that we're investigating the people on that team, and that we're willing to take measures against them if necessary. Pick a team member to take point on the bombing aspect of this, and authorize them to enact final sanctions against whomever their investigation deems to be the bomber.

"This order came down from the top, Steve. Let's hope it's the right one."

:siren:A gun is now in play!:siren:

Until 8 PM EST tonight (roughly 12 hours), you may use the action ##arm <playername>. The player who has been armed by the most other players at 8 PM EST will be given the gun.

Rules for Arming:
  • You may not arm yourself.
  • You may not arm no one; if you take the action, it must name a player in the game. You are not required to use this action.
  • If you use the arm action multiple times, only your last (most recent) action will be considered.
  • You can not take back an arm action once made, only overwrite it with another arm action.
  • This is a plurality decision; the player with the highest number of players arming them gets the gun regardless of if it is a majority. However, if a majority is reached prior to 8 PM, the gun will be distributed early to that player.
  • In the event of a tie, the player who reached the number first will be given the gun.

Rules for Gun:
  • The gun is a one-shot gun that only works on D1.
  • To use the gun, the action ##shoot <playername> should be used in the thread.
  • If the gun is not used by the time the day ends (hammer or deadline), the gun is lost.
  • The gun being used does not end the day, and everyone except for the person being shot can continue discussion as normal.

Where does a doctor who loses his license end up? Usually, in a bar drinking his sorrows away, or in a corporate setting, maybe shilling product for a pharmaceutical company. Hurt ended up on the black side of the world. His medical expertise was vital in enhanced interrogation techniques, road side black market clinics, and off the books plastic surgery work.

But Hurt wasn't an operative born and bred. Maybe that's why he didn't notice Mills in his room until Mills turned on the light. Maybe that's why he didn't notice the gun until Mills cocked it.

"I know it was you, Doctor."

"Wha-?"

"The bomb. I know it was you. You were the first to arrive, and your room was initially directly above the conference room. You planted it, didn't you?"

"No, I..." Hurt raised his hand and took a step towards Mills in protest. Again, he wasn't an operative, not really. He never expected Mills reaction to the move would be...

Things were tense on the team; Mills claimed Dr. Hurt was the man response for the bombing, but no one had turned up evidence to support this. Could he have been wrong? Could he have known he was wrong? The fear and paranoia were palpable.

Which is why weekly font was here. Just ahead of him was his contact. It was against regulations to bring in outside help, but given the circumstances if weekly font wanted to make it through the week he needed all the help he could get.

His contact stepped off the train and gestured weekly font over. “Geht es Ihnen gut?”

Garb was killed by a bullet. capps was killed by a bomb. Little Mac was killed by dirty socks.

The team was a constant buzz of activity; leads eneded to be followed, digital surveilance studied, and potential enemies compared to the situation. Because of this, many of the usual domestic functions went by the wayside. Dinner became half-heated sausages and take out fast food. Showers become brief stints under the water with little soap and no shampoo. And today's dirty laundry became tomorrow's work outfit.

The cyanide must have been applied overnight to Little Mac's dirty socks. Once he put them on, he was already dead. It just took his body time to know it.He died in shock, pain, and confusion. How could he know what was killing him?

~

Mills walked through the alley behind Garb's old house, trying to piece together the events of Garg's death. If they could solve the beginning, they could solve the end. They all knew that West had shot Garb at close range, but the rifle used had been set up for a long distance shot. Mills opened the fence and entered the secluded backyard.

"Why did you go in the building, West? Why not shoot from further away, when he couldn't shoot back?"

"It was the privacy fence."

Mills turned at the sound, hand dropping to his waist for a gun. "You...!" The bullet took him in the throat, and he dropped to the ground, hands trying to stop the flow of blood."

"In the pictures we gave him, there wasn't a privacy fence. Clear shot from 80 yards, abandoned house around the corner. Then when he saw the privacy fence, he panicked." A boot stepped on Mills's chest. "loving amateurs, right?"

Mills never heard the second shot.

”Let me see if I understand this suggestion, Operative... Mom?” The man glanced briefly at the report Pinterest Mom had brought with him all the way to Langley.

After multiple deaths on the team, Mom had reached the breaking point. He knew that the team as it stood was ineffective to deal with the enemy it faced, primarily because in his opinion it wasn't just one enemy.

“In this report, you postulate that the team in Berlin, which was hand picked by British, American, and German intelligence bureaus, is hopelessly compromised. That there are multiple threats embedded within the team, and that the best solution in your mind would be incarceration of the entire team and the introduction of a whole new set of Operatives.”

Mom nodded. “That's correct, sir. It's clear from the death's of Operatives Mac and Mills that there are more than one...”

The man waved away the rest of Mom's sentence. “We're still awaiting final confirmation that Operative Mac's death was anything but a stress-induced heart attack, and Operative Mills died in an alley. Neither death is confirmed to be enemy...”

“They were enemy attacks! How can you ignore them for what they...”

“Operative Mom, it's apparent that you have had a break with reality due to job-induced stress, and that this report is nothing more than a fabrication of your mind. You're placed on administrative leave effective immediately, and remanded to psychiatric observation to ensure...”

Later, after Mom was removed, the man made a call. “Yes, it's me.” Pause. “Yeah, one of the Operative's was suspicious, but he was removed. Anyway, your operatives are still safe.” Pause. “Just have them finish quickly in Berlin; I don't know how long I can hide what's happening from my superiors.”

merk sat at the late night diner, tongue playing over a loose tooth. With the deaths it was getting harder to break away from the team, but his handler still required regular updates. Sometimes it seemed like working for the private sector led to more red tape and meaningless protocols than working for the government.

Someone slid into the booth across from merk, and he sighed in relief. "Hello, Johnso..." He trailed off as he realized who was sitting across from him.

Hal smiled coldly. "Hello, merk. Were you expecting someone?"

merk looked around the diner for any hope of escape, and realized he'd be careless. In the booth by the door was Murmur and ANarc. Diqnol leaned against the emergency exit in the back. merk was cornered.

"Now, merk, we're not going to turn you over. Not right away. There's too much blood on your hands."

"I didn't..."

"Don't lie to me!" Hal's fist pounded onto the table, drawing looks from the other patrons, but he didn't care. "Ernie was my friend. We've all lost friends. Now tell us. Everything."

"I... I can't, they'll kill my family."

Hal leaned in, his eyes cold. "What do you think
we'll do, merk?"

"I think you're better men than that, Hal." merk's tongue hit the loose tooth again, pushing hard enough to knock it out of the open socket. "I pray to God you're better than that." He bit down, and tasted acid. The last thing he saw was Hal leaping across the table, but too late. Too late.

Grandicap knew that time was running out. They'd caught merk, they'd catch him soon. He needed to complete his job, eliminate all evidence that Jorn Corporation was involved in the events in Berlin... and disappear.

The team was working on the buddy system now, and he found himself teamed up with Operative Narcotics to man the headquarters while the other two teams were in the field. It was a simple matter to put a bullet into Narcotics and begin the process of breaking into the system's mainframe. A few minutes of work, and he'd be able to systematically erase any documents tying himself or Jorn Corporation to the events in Berlin or to merk.

"You know, comrade, once you've broken that encryption, the SVR would be very appreciative if you'd turn over all the documents you find." Somber sat down in a chair beside Grandi, a smile on his face.

Behind Grandi, he could hear Hal snort. "'Comrade?' What are we, Somber, some cliché 1980s Soviet-era KGB agents?" He put a hand on Grandicap's shoulder, and a gun to his back. "Listen, Grandi, the choice here is simple. Let your algorithm finish, then get up and walk away. Disappear. We'll claim you were gone when we got here. Or..." Hal pushed the gun in a little for emphasis.

Grandicap kept his hands very still as he looked at Somber. "If I do that, I live?"

"Yes."

He considered his options. There was the pill... but Grandicap didn't have a family waiting for him that Jorn Corporation could threaten. All that they could hold over him was his life, and Hal currently controlled that. After a few seconds, he sighed. "Deal."

Hal clapped him on the shoulder.

"Good man."

Excerpt from Berlin Team Report

...is clear now that Jorn Corporation paid West to not only enact the Breach on the CIA servers, but then paid him to eliminate Agent Garb. Thanks to the work of the NATO team, especially Operatives Somberbrero and Hal Incandenza, one Jorn Corporation Operative is deceased and the other has fled the country, his cover blown.

We recommend new identities for the remaining team members, and promotion into lead roles in the field. They've performed admirably under an intense and internally compromised situation. As for Jorn Corporation, now that we know they are a threat we should consider black level interventions against them. The should be considered an American commercial entity and an enemy political entity...

Intentions

My intentions in this game were to have more players than the Breach, but allow it to have the same quickness as the Breach. However, I wanted it to be more forgiving of town mistakes (which it was not). To do this, I set up two scum teams of two each, which had to kill the other, and had two masonries which in essential gave half-cop results on the members. You knew that the members of the masonry were guaranteed to not be one of the two scum alignments. To prevent this becoming a claim and compare game, though, I purposefully left the alignments vague (NATO, Russian, Jorn Corp) but made sure that the scum could not be tripped up by not knowing the VT role (NATO Operative).

In this way, it was meant to be a simple game with three roles: Scum Goons, VT, and Masons. But the two scum team dynamic would, I hoped, allow a fast game that town would still have a good chance in. I also included the gun D1 and an additional VT because of something I noticed in the Breach; the conversations meandered on D1 until deadline approached, and I had to extend the deadline D1. I'd hoped that treating the gun as I did would give a soft deadline that would spur conversation, provide information, and lead to a more involved early D1.

Result

I think that I tripped up in three areas.
  • First, I don't think my PMs were clear enough, as aside from merk most people seemed to miss important information in them. Both masonries assumed they were confirmed town and acted as such, and the scum didn't seem interested in hunting each other despite needing to kill each other to win. I think if you asked Somber and Hal, they didn't realize they were on the verge of winning tonight because they were oblivious to needing to hunt the other scum team at all. I built the game assuming there would be much more cross-team attacks and inter-masonry suspicion, but the only time scum tried to attack the other team was merk's kill on Mills.
  • Second, I needed to give town two more VTs, I think; the game was intended to run until D4-N6, not end on N3.
  • Third, I needed to make it clear that flavor was just flavor and shouldn't be used for casing and such. I wrote the flavor for VT assuming they wouldn't know about the two team set-up, and I wrote the mason flavor with them assuming the same but focused on their area of expertise. That made a lot of players assume there couldn't be two scum teams.

I'm happy that up until the final night, all three sides could still win, but that the Russians basically won through luck as much as skill doesn't sit right with me. I'm happy about how the gun started discussion threads, but once Mills had the gun it shut down conversation while everyone waited for him to use it.

In summary, I hope you had fun with the game, but I wouldn't call the set-up a success. There were a few good points, but some bad ones as well.
