We are more than able to come to a deal with Iran at the current point in time, which is why Bibi and the Republican congress is doing it's best to mess things up. A Iranian nuclear deal holds far more power symbolically than it does practically, it proves that Iran isn't an insane rogue state which is something Bibi doesn't want.

So the SCOTUS is hearing a case today the looks to ban the use of independent districting commissions. The case is Arizona State Legislature v. Arizona Independent Redistricting Commission. In 2000, voters passed an amendment to the state constitution that set up an independent commission. This prevented the intense gerrymander seen in other states after the 2010 election. So the state Republican Party is suing. Because it is totally because the election clause says the power should lay with the legislature and they live the constitution so much, and not at all because they want to gerrymander the state to hell and back to secure their own power (In 2012 democrats won 5 of the 9 house seats but that is totally unrelated)

I for one look forward to our 5-4 decision that further undermines our ability to have good elections.

Four Democrats.

And looking at the maps they're the places you'd expect them. Which seems exactly what you'd want in districting!

F-16 has a range of 3200+ km dude.

Just to expand briefly, the quoted ferry range of an aircraft is a one way trip at the most economical climb and cruise speed. "Combat radius" will often times be reported, this number will be how far from an air base the aircraft can travel to, drop weapons and return. It will be less than half the ferry range because fuel economy isn't considered. An even shorter number is the sometimes reported "high-low-high" range. This would be a mission profile where they cruise at high altitude to get close to the target then fly very low and fast to avoid radar, and return at a high altitude cruise. This range is going to be much shorter than the normal combat radius. Never mind that to avoid radar the Israeli planes would have to conduct the entire mission at nap of the earth which eats a ridiculous amount of fuel.

Basically unless the U.S. is going to give Israel a B-2 or B-1 it can't happen. I guess Israel could use a conventional IRBM if they had one but no way Pakistan wouldn't go launch a nuclear one in response when they detected one coming their way.

I think the biggest problem with economics is that it's both a soft science and something that is an important part of the national political dialogue, so you're stuck with idiotic ideas surviving long past their due date because influential people benefit from them, and voters themselves being swayed by easily-falsified talking points because economics is extremely complex and a lot of proven ideas don't pass the common sense test at first glance.

Add that in with the ability to always say "well that policy didn't work that time because they didn't do this thing, so it will be different if we try again" and the fact that the same policies can have varying degrees of effectiveness depending on when and where they are implemented and you come up with a partisan clusterfuck of opinions.

SCOTUS denied very to a case out of Maryland where a suspect was convicted on DNA evidence, with the DNA being collected by swabbing the arm rests of a chair the suspect was sitting in rather that the suspect submitting to a test. The appellate court had ruled this was acceptable so that ruling stands - the state can passively gather and indefinitely retain DNA records

Fairly ominous in the big picture.

Politics in general is the same way. It would be nice if we could all just do the rational thing and completely shut out 99% of people who use the words "socialist" or "fascist" in political conversation, but we can't because politics touches everyone and we have to give the idiots a voice too. Yet politics and political theory are real things that real people study and even read and write books about!

i hate politics for the same reason i hate driving - you're forced to participate in it (or else massively inconvenience yourself forever) and you have to participate with the general population, the majority of which are horrible at it at best and actively dangerous at worst

Which means it's pretty much garbage. Anything that works perfectly in theory but has zero predictive power and very little reflective power should be discarded. I say this as an Econ major.

Yeah it's a soft science but it can still be used to make predictions, just like meteorology.

It's a far cry from "zero predictive power."

If you've been arrested I don't think you can lawfully refuse to give a DNA sample so this ruling just seems to suggest they can get the same through an available means without having to swab you.

If the guy wasn't arrested yet and/or otherwise did not have to comply and give a DNA sample if requested then yeah it's kinda hosed up.

The Iran policy makes more sense on all sides if you work under the assumption that Iran will eventually obtain nuclear capabilities without a full scale invasion and take over of the country. And I think that's a pretty realistic assumption. No president wants it to happen on their watch, Israel is willing to do whatever to make sure it doesn't happen, and Iran wants as little damage to their economy as possible on their way there. And the republicans just want Obama to look as bad as possible at all times.
