Politics in general is the same way. It would be nice if we could all just do the rational thing and completely shut out 99% of people who use the words "socialist" or "fascist" in political conversation, but we can't because politics touches everyone and we have to give the idiots a voice too. Yet politics and political theory are real things that real people study and even read and write books about!

i hate politics for the same reason i hate driving - you're forced to participate in it (or else massively inconvenience yourself forever) and you have to participate with the general population, the majority of which are horrible at it at best and actively dangerous at worst

i'm far more comfortable with the idea of existence being a time limited thing which you pass through in various stages until it is your time to die and then you return to oblivion

the idea of living for centuries let alone forever is horrifying

i think the point is that you have some unknowing crankness in you until society shifts in an unexpected direction and suddenly you're the dinosaur for thinking that implanting smartphone chips into infant skulls is bad and wrong

I don't understand why he was so drat intent on adopting them in the first place. He had to fight tooth and nail and then cheat to adopt those kids, what was in it for him? Is all just about the money?

probably he/his wife's vision of a perfect family included daughters, and they selfishly pursued their own needs above those of the girls. he already had three boys, to adopt three girls in one go is... ambitious? dunno the correct word. biting off more than he can chew. blinded by fantasy of some perfect home situation without realizing that taking care of emotionally abused orphans is in fact a hell of a lot of work and hardship

whatever, it's almost certainly not about the money. it's about pig ignorant decisions and unrealistic expectations, which is worse. the shameful thing is not that they adopted in the first place, but that they quietly tried to get rid of the kids to hide their failure

I wonder if any of them will stick to their convictions and say "What we sang is true; we won't admit blacks because it's one of our traditions and without traditions, why does the Greek system even exist?"

no, because they're cowards who know their thoughts are unpopular and ugly, which is why they only air them in private

What region of GA?

Anything north of Macon and close to any metropolitan areas is generally much lower on the crazie quotient. Savannah's 40 and under crowd is generally pretty tolerant. Extreme SW and SE Georgia is the loving nut house.

ehh suicide is plausible, though it's odd that he would go so far from his house just to hang himself

It's way too early to decide on this case, but I figured it was something worth alerting you all to so you could follow it as it unfolds. Could be a suicide, could be foul play, but the location and race of the person are obvious red flags.

oh for sure, but if i lived alone in rural mississippi i'd hang myself too

Is there any truth to the idea that Southern states in particular were concerned that Congress could compel their militias to go elsewhere so that no one would be left to quell a slave uprising, or is that liberal blogosphere revisionist history?

Eh, every militia ever has complained about service far from home.

Did he reveal what he knew about the business plot because he was patriotic or because he was about to be rolled up in the investigation?

The Business Plot only exists because Butler claimed that a representative of some high profile capitalists approached him and asked him to lead a coup, which is a bit suspect. The congressional investigation found no evidence to back up his claims and around this point in his retirement Butler swung hard left and was vocal about how much he totally hated big business, facism, and military adventurism. However there was some substantiation of a business-fascist movement forming in America with wealthy backers in need of a popular and well known armymans, and if they approached the high-profile Butler to be their military consultant woo boy they asked the wrong dude.

e: All of Butler's claims were substantiated up to the actual point of "some guys asked me to lead a coup"

Smedly Butler, best general. I would put that man in the presidency.

He was a cantankerous troll, and a brave soldier. Not really presidential material but an interesting person.

The only reason he got as far as he did was because his dad was a representative. Otherwise he would have been shitcanned before his time for being too unorthodox and headstrong.
