Previously on RuPaul's Drag Race... "So... I just feel, Mr. Cat, that you came for me." "Gurl." https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TDlbg01xXiY And in the end, the winner was... Bianca Del Rio. Long may she reign. Remember when this show would start in January? We kept waiting and waiting and then Michelle went on Celebrity Big Brother and we kept waiting... The show is finally back. Time for some new girls to help us make it out of what has been a horrible winter. Save us, Mama Ru! RuPaul's Drag Race is a competitive reality show where Drag Queens compete in a series of challenges to prove that they have the Charisma, Uniqueness, Nerve, and Talent to be crowned the Next Drag Superstar and win a lot of money. Episodes are pretty typical for the format: The girls complete in a mini-challenge that usually gives the winner(s) some kind of advantage, a main challenge which can be anything from building costumes to acting to putting straight men in drag, and finally a runway show. After speaking with the judges a winner is chosen who may or may not gain immunity for the following week. The queens deemed to be in the Bottom Two battle it out in the Lip Sync... For Your Life! . The loser of the LSFYL goes home, leaving a trail of sequins and tears in her wake. I know that it sounds fairly normal, but this show is a joy to watch. The important thing to keep in mind is that these girls are professional Drag Queens. They know how to speak, put on a show, throw shade, and give us the cutting one-liners in the confessionals that we expect. This Season Seven, they should know what to expect. (And yet, some of them STILL don't know how to sew.) It would be nice to win $100K (or more?) but the real benefit to being on the show is the exposure. Simply making the cast of RPDR is a huge career opportunity. Just showing up in Episode One leads to tons of appearance opportunities. If you are prepared and savvy enough (Willam, Courtney, Jinkx, Shangela, Bianca, Adore, etc.) the sky is the limit. These girls aren't 18-year-olds from a small town who think that Tyra is going to make them a supermodel or twinks with average vocal talent who are going to get chewed up and spit out by the industry, it takes real balls to be a Drag Queen so don't cry for them We're likely to see the following: - At least one singing challenge - Group choreography - Dress construction - The Snatch Game, a take off of the classic TV show Match Game - The Library is Open, whereupon the queens read each other to filth - Acting challenges - Makeup challenges - Makeovers for non-drag queens - Hot guys in underwear - Etc. If that doesn't convince you, NewNowNext (an arm of Logo) put together a Beginner's Guide to the show. It will cover everything you need to know. RuPaul's Drag Race Untucked shows conversations between the Queens as they await the results of the judging. It used to air after the main episode, but they are moving it online this year. Episodes should be up the following morning. Personally, I don't care for it but I get the appeal. The Judges RuPaul Charles The leader of the merry bunch, we thank Ru year after year for coming up with the tasty weekly confection that is RuPaul's Drag Race. What else is there to say? Okay, let's be real. The winner of the show is picked by Ru. The person who is kicked off each week is picked by Ru. This is Ru's baby. It exists to give glory to Ru and help sell her albums (now on iTunes). You thought it was bad to ignore Tim Gunn? DON'T IGNORE RU. Michelle Visage (That picture still is everything forever.) Every once in a while I remember that Michelle wasn't an original judge on the show and I have to pause and collect my wits. If Ru is the Mother, then Michelle is the stern Aunt. Michelle wants all of the queens to reach their potential, so she's willing to be harsh but it always comes from a place of live. She's been friends with RuPaul forever, co-hosted with Ru on her VH1 talkshow, has been a more than welcome addition to the judging panel since the third season, and is the one who really goes on the road with the queens to help push the brand. She's fabulous. In January she competed in Celebrity Big Brother over in the UK and made it to the end as the last American standing. I'd have thought she would have done better but loving Perez Hilton ruins everything. SANTINO IS GONE!!!!! Apparnetly, both he and Merle Ginsberg will be back at some point so that's retro... I guess? Carson Kressley and Ross Mathews Oh thank Ru, this is a fantastic choice. Ross has already shown that he takes judging the show very seriously, and Carson is Carson. It's a major upgrade. The Scruff Pit Crew Eye candy, props, set movers... you call them and they'll show up in their skivvies. Guest Judges There are usually one or two guest judges each episode and the lineup is fantastic this year: Olivia Netwon-John, John Waters, Ariana Grande, Kathy Griffin, Isaac Mizrahi, Rebecca Romijn, and more! I'm so excited for this to come back. I got to see Trinity K Bonet last week and she was AMAZING. Jade Jolie also performed and bitch looked exactly like Taylor Swift. It was incredible. She was also really sweet and made sure to come out and take pictures and meet the fans.

Loving MAX, Katya, Ginger, on every level and everything they do. Kennedy is also a drat professional who's not taking guff. They're setting up Violet and Fame to be some battle royale but the only real battle here is which of them has less substance, and Fame is winning that by a mile. Jasmine is super fun but sloppy on the runway so she'll get booted soon. EDIT: Oh yeah, Pearl and Trixie are both pretty awesome and I dig their clear aesthetic visions. But there's a lot of good stuff happening this season so they're going to need to bring it if they're going to stand out. Luckily Pearl has an in on the NYC Bitchfight plot line. Also gently caress you Kelly Mantle Syndrome for sending another professional older girl packing so I can watch Kandy Ho and Sasha Belle poo poo up the stage for another week Combed Thunderclap fucked around with this message at 22:46 on Mar 1, 2015 |

Anyway, I'm super pumped for the show's return, it's such a delight. But I'm also a little nervous. As someone said in the previous thread, most of these queens look like dollar store versions of seasons past queens. Based on the previews, there is definitely some aping of Raja and Sharon Needles going on.

Most of the time I ignored Santino or just rolled my eyes at his douchiness, but he would always end up picking on particular queens over and over (cough, Pandora) because their style didn't fit his narrow definition of successful drag. That was bullshit.

I think Santino at least deserves credit for this in his his non-section. Pretty sure this was prominent on his casting reel, so I think he might've originally been cast to be the fun-lovin' light judge -- doesn't hurt that RuPaul also blogged that he was hot: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FzUH6wjU46A I ruined some eliminations for myself a bit last season (and got disheartened by a lot of mean backbiting in online comments) so I've been avoiding most fan-content in the lead up to 2015. Props to you all here for keepin' it cute and spoiler-tagging. Haven't even watched the leaked portion of ep 1 yet, but from meet the queens I'm repping Tempest (local queen!), Ginger, Max, and Katya. May the best woman win.

I don't see Tempest (too dated), Jasmine (too sloppy), Trixie (Michelle is going to go to town on her makeup), or Max (too one note) lasting very long. We'll see though. For the first time in a few seasons I haven't followed all the internet sleuthing showing off what these queens can really do, it's just my own speculation from the promo videos and the first 10 minutes of the first episode.

I would have written off Max or Trixie too, but quirky and/or one-note queens who can demonstrate flexibility and the ability to go off note from time to time while staying professional and on point just keep taking the crown (arguably going back to Season 3, Season 4 at worst).

I dunno man, after watching the first two episodes Trixie is actually pretty strong. She also can paint like a regular queen so I'm interested in seeing whether or not she does it for a challenge to appease Michelle. Edit: Plus, she has most of the best lines of the talking heads. If she makes it past episode 3, someone better pin her down and force her to wear a non-grey wig. Ginger Minj busted out more varied looks in the premiere episode than Darrienne Lake in her entire run. I'm exited for Trixie specifically because of how off putting the makeup is and I can't wait to see Miss Fame stumble into the dirt the moment any challenge requires a personality outside of bitchy.

This is completely anecdotal but at the preview party in Philly, Trixie was ( pretty deservedly imo, although shes 100% on point with someone you'd see in the Philly drag scene anyway, which might haven skewed things) literally dancing on a stack of ones people had thrown her way. She was also really charming and sweet to talk to (not that any of the queens weren't) and yeah, her talking heads are so great. She and Katya are my faves. So psyched E: I forgot, Trixie is a makeup artist so she can totally do regular drag makeup, she just rocks her crazy barbie look by choice. Man, that episode was awesome. My favorite lines were Violet saying "No one says that, but yeah" in reply to Jasmine saying Hotlanta and Pearl saying "Bitch, I'm from New York. You can wear fur in the spring... OK?" My dream top 3 is Pearl, Katya and a tie between Violet and Trixie.

Logo is putting up all kinds of extras I can't watch like Katya and Ru in the workroom. Finally got to watch the first episode and I am LIVING for Trixie. Violet is also visually perfect in everything so far. I like Max and don't think she is anything like Milk - I'm getting the same creative vibe I got from Sharon Needles back in the day and I love it. My opinion on Milk is pretty shady so I don't like the comparison at all Loving Katya, Max, Trixie, and Violet. Waiting for Pearl to impress me (being gorgeous out of drag doesn't count!) and already fed up with Miss Fame, Kandy and Jasmine. The rest I'm very happy with but don't have anything to say about them! P.S. Sasha Bell is great and getting a bad edit EDIT: Untucked is up on Youtube And my proxy issues are now solved thanks to reddit, hurrah!
