we monitor many frequencies. we listen always. came a voice, out of the babel of tongues, speaking to us. it played us a mighty dub.
advertising is only immoral if it's effective

not really

but you're being dishonest if you say advertising is just a form
of letting the public be
informed. I mean it could be that but not

it's like rom Swanson would make a good ad "this phone was built with good tools and time and effort was out into it. there are no gimmicky features. buy it or not"

okay so now that you've let it known that anything that isn't a spec sheet is immoral lets get down with sin:

you know what the fundamental problem is here, pagancow doesn't see selling someone something as an adversarial process, he sees it as a mutually beneficial one

i can't imagine how he can maintain that belief when we're explicitly discussing how brands and ads about those brands are intentionally emotionally manipulative, but i guess that sort of cognitive dissonance is what you need to show up to work every day in advertising

i don't think you can say using emotional manipulation to coerce someone into doing something they wouldn't otherwise consent to isn't immoral since in a more physical context it falls neatly unto the umbrella of "rape"

irl i do a lot of work with brands. i'm pretty good now at adopting brand languages as needed (visual, copy, whatever)

it's all bullshit, a waste of consciousness.

human beings make emotional choices not rational ones, of course most ads sell a dream, or aspiration and then try to tie the product to it

sometimes its a good tie, most of the time its bad

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8HnQSL9HXo8

first thing that comes up is breaking bad, a thing people have an emotional connection with, i guess every time you watch breaking bad its like being raped now because they are tied to the product now

yeah but word of mouth isn't propaganda. if someone likes someone genuinely and tells someone and they buy it that's acceptable, it's based in reality and good things will sell better

A product will always find a fan. That fan will evangelize the product and get more fans. Maybe someone doesn't like the product at all, but that's ok, because brands are owned by huge companies, and perhaps you'll like one of their other products.

i remember in "i, robot" someone says to will smith "nice shoes" and he answers "vintage 2004". i'm used to product placement but i had never seen actors actually acknowledge it in-character

people talk about this one a lot but it's one of the few examples that actually contributes to both character development and plot. and black dudes always gotta keep their shoe game fresh to death. it makes sense to have that scene, like, it had genuine narrative value. were they supposed to make up a shoe brand. I thought the Audi product placement was way dumber
