Executive producer Quincey Jones never used scripts and would just make up scenes as he went along. If he couldn't think of what to shoot next he would consult a hardcover copy of "Heart of Darkness" by Joseph Conrad which he kept with him at all times. This technique is most noticeable in season 2 episode 5 "Granny gets busy." In the episode "Just say Yo" the scene where Carlton does speed at the prom was not planned. A camera was left on while Alfonso Ribeiro took a bunch of speed to get into character. He began behaving erratically while thinking he was actually Carlton. Quincey Jones told the other actors "just go with it!" The Fresh Prince of Bel air was originally set in 1950s Baltimore and was about a ketamine addicted nihilistic detective who solves crimes by "phase-minding" persons of interest, starring Al Pacino as Will Smith. Quicey Jones reportedly rewrote the entire show overnight after having a fever dream in an Bangkok airport and would later recast Will Smith as Will Smith. |

Every season has at least one scene where a dog eats a candy bar in slow motion while the Wilhelm scream plays. In season 3 episode 5 "Hilary Gets a Job" In the scene where Will Smith confronts Hillary at the burger shack, Uncle Phil (James Avery) can be seen behind the shack injecting himself with an unknown liquid. "Dj Jazzy Jeff" was named after Jeffrey Dahmer the cannibal serial killer. The character's original name "DJ Jeffrey Dahmer is god" was rejected by the censor board for unknown reasons.

During the episode "Same Game, Next Season" (Season 5), Will Smith stops the current dialog to address the audience and comment, 'Hey, if the Banks are so rich, why don't we have a roof?' The camera then pans up to show the exposed ceiling of the set. This was the most severe of several fourth wall breaking encounters in The Fresh Prince of Bel Air. |

In the fifth season episode "Will's Misery", Alfonso Ribeiro suddenly breaks character to scream, "NOOOO! GOD NO!!!! WILLL!!!! NOOOO!!!" as he runs away form the set. He's continuously filmed as he runs through the audience and studios at a frantic pace. This outburst is never explained. |

Jim Jones, David Keresh, Marshall Applewhite, and Timothy McVeigh are listed in the credits under "Special thanks" According to staff writers: executive producer Quincey Jones thought that the character Steve Urkel was a real person and was notorious for firing anyone that he felt resembled Urkel. 3 camera operators and 1 best boy were fired throughout season 1 for this reason. Jones could often be heard muttering under his breath "That cheese eating little poo poo stole my thunder." and was reported to having a tattoo of Urkel's decapitated head with the phrase "tu mortuis" covering his entire back.
