A Rube Goldberg machine is a contraption, invention, device or apparatus that is deliberately over-engineered or overdone to perform a very simple task in a very complicated fashion, usually including a chain reaction. The expression is named after American cartoonist and inventor Rube Goldberg (1883–1970) -Wikipedia Today there are some seriously impressive rube goldberg machines, whether they're made inside a video game like the incredible machine or minecraft, animated like some something awful's own blue ball machine, or even made in real life! To start things off, here's one of my favorites, made with lego mindstorms https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rWd3vgLaA_M

I don't have a video for this one, but The timekeeping machine from the later series of Scrapheap Challenge. Early on they'd just keep time by... keeping the time, but after a few seasons they replaced it with a large machine that started by rolling a ball down a chute, and after ten hours, ringing a gong. The machine had a great "scrappy" look to it, which really meshed with the aesthetic of the show.
