Its been a trip reading the comments in this thread, especially from the people not familiar with the material. Its great to hear differing impressions. I wouldn't personally want to change the costume, but I can see where that argument is coming from, and its an interesting one.

This right here is arguing for something a whole lot less complex. See, the reason why people are flipping out over Wisk in this thread is because of how unusual the guy is in action stuff like this. How many times have you seen "cold" or "calculating". And that's it for the character?

What you call a half-baby I call a character with several layers, all vying to come out on top depending on the situation and context. The fact that he isn't the most cold blooded thing out there makes him MORE dangerous. Every person that interacted with him picked up on that. This was a guy to not be hosed with, because he's an explosion waiting to happen, and god help you if you're in its path. He's not just "cool". He's loving interesting, and one of, in not the most, interesting character in a Marvel film/series yet.

Another facet I dug was the corruption he represented, from the trial of the assassin onwards. I LOVED that thing Urich wrote about powerful people not needing to follow the rules everyone else does, that their own needs and desires are the only thing that matters. And yes, the middle class (and I guess everyone else) suffering for it. That's some nice thematic ground for a show about a flipping guy wailing on undesirables to cover.

EDIT: Here's a nice test to figure out whether your character is actually complex. What do they do on their offhours? Red Skull/Loki/etc, no idea. But Fisk? Sitting in a dark corner of his lonely penthouse blankly staring at multimillion dollar works of horrifying childhood imagery.

I really really liked the scene where Urich was beginning his Fisk expose and it's full of these cliched "mega hit piece that takes down the villian" story beats and then bam, Fisk is right there on TV saying almost the exact same poo poo but with a positive spin and Urich just deletes his story.

Honestly my biggest problem with the series is that he beats information out of like 10 people. It's not even a thing about superheroes using torture, it's just, he can do other stuff as well. Come up with a new story beat guys.

McNerd posted:

Yeah, it's kind of crazy that that puts him into a tier with actual superheroes though.

Then again, Daredevil seems to be on a pretty low tier himself; he gets tazed by old men, and occasionally has a pretty hard time even one-on-one against random hoodlums. Comics folks: is he always like this? Do you think he's up for some sort of powerup in the near future, or is he just going to keep biting off more than he can chew forever? It was cool for this one season where he got really invested in this war with Fisk but it could start to get silly after a while.

Remember when he beat up a hallway full of Russian toughs.

So Daredevil seems to be reaching cultural mass out in the real world. Hanging out in my local shady bar last Saturday, and every random dude was talking about it, even guys I'm pretty sure don't have regular access to a TV, computer, or electricity.

I was curious about that myself. Cultural cachet is huge for sub services, HBO loves it when one of their shows breaks into the Zeitgeist and SNL and Sesame Street start doing parodies of it. HoC and OtiNB have had their share of that, but I haven't seen much of DD out there, though it is early yet. I know it's doing well in internet nerd circles, and I hope that it will resonate with a mainstream audience.

^^^ It's only been a week. Wait for it to show up on SNL or something in a few days or something. How long did Orange is the New Black take to hit?

Well, to my mind, both it and HoC were pushed harder by Netflix marketing and the entertainment media machine. OitNB due to its subject matter and minority cast generated a lot of thinkpieces about the political hot button issues it was handling (that and being good of course). HoC was Netflix's first entree into the prestige drama arena and starred two A listers, so it got a lot of buzz due to that.

Netflix's marketing strategy is weird to me, I don't know who they reach out to. Take Bloodline for example: it's a show stacked top to bottom with serious talent, and they spent eight months shooting it on location. But most people had no idea it was coming out. They were a bit better than that with DD. Though, who am I to question the marketing strategy of an unbelievably successful company like Netlfix, obviously.

Steven DeKnight mentioned that Marvel requested to have Ben killed in the show before the part was even cast. They cast Vondie knowing ahead of time he was going to die and they could get him for one season.

That's odd, I wonder what's behind that. I was kind of hoping that we'd see Ulrich across all five series as he has ties to street level stories but nope!

Also Chris Samnee, who draws the DD comic with writer Mark Waid, tried his hand at Netflix DD.

I guess I'm not really looking at it in a series perspective.

Still though, there was a theme about whether a hero should kill or not. Fisk's violence was explained by a troubled past and a jacked up mother and father. Murdock was not a killer because superhero. It would have been nice to have that theme come to a close with some force and, ironically, I think it would have been best served by having Fisk die.

That would've totally undermined the central theme of "how can I deal with this guy without killing him".

I mean he wrestles with killing him the whole season and then to have Fisk die, whether by Matt's hand or not, completely obviates that whole conflict.

Spoilers about Jessica Jones:
She was a former B-list superhero who went to school with Peter Parker and go her powers from a truck spilling toxic waste on her. She had pretty generic flight, invulnerability and strength powers and went by the name Jewel. She was mind controlled for a long time by a villian called The Purple Man, who at the end of it forced her to go after the Avengers. She punches Scarlet Witch and Thor and Vision go berserk on her and after all the fallout clears she decides she doesn't want to be a superhero anymore. So she vows to not use her powers and becomes a PI that works street level super heroey cases.

I don't know how much they are going to change it for the series because a lot of her character arc works because she was this background character that no one knew about among the vast and deep Marvel Universe. But with how shallow the MCU is in terms of actual existing superheroes, I don't see how you adapt that, so I'd expect some serious changes. For one thing she's best friends with Jessica Drew and Carol Danvers, and I don't think either of those characters are gonna be in the show.

McNerd posted:
