Hey guys,

Former Dire Straits frontman and established solo artist Mark Knopfler has a new album dropping on the 16th - but for some reason I was able to get a copy of it today from the place where I get my digital music. Oops!

This is the only song that's been publically released before the album was; about sci-fi author Beryl Bainbridge:

I'm having a listen through at the moment and I'll post up some impressions when I'm done.

His previous albums Get Lucky, Sailing to Philadelphia and Kill to Get Crimson are also very, very good and the full albums are on YouTube if you want to have a listen.

I loving love Mark Knopfler's stuff and buy everything he does sight unseen (or rather sound unheard heh). The new one is pretty good, but a bit too downtempo and ponderous for my taste; I quite prefer "Privateering".

Yea I'm not sure what to make of this one. Beryl is clearly the hook track, but it's almost the highpoint in terms of the Knopfler sound on the album as well.

Seriously you could have cut about five tracks from this album and I'm not sure I would have noticed.

Privateering certainly grows on you and Get Lucky was great right from the first listen, but Tracker doesn't seem to have the same depth to it.

A lot of the songs are kind of samey and drag on way too long. Privateering was just more heterogeneous, it had everything from awesome bluesy songs to folksy laments. On Tracker, I genuinely like River Towns, Beryl (fantastic song), Long cool girl... and that's pretty much it so far, everything else seems totally forgettable and the opener is a pretty shameless retread of All the roadrunning. But eh, even mediocre Knopfler is still better than most other stuff out there, so I'm gonna give it another in-depth listen tomorrow.

I buy ever Knopfler album and will continue to do so until he decides to stop writing amazing music.

This video really gives you a feel of the new album, and his artistic direction.

Mark Knopfler is one of the most humble and mild mannered musicians around. Glad to see his Dire Straits fame never changed him.

Thanks for the link, amazing video. Yeah, I love the guy - also, see him live if you can, he's still a great performer, he takes his time and plays nice, long varied sets.

I saw him in 2004, but I don't think he's been back to Australia since :smith:
