I just got mildly put off by it being something kinda trying to bank off nostalgia for Alpha Centauri but simultaneously trying to distance itself from Alpha Centauri. seemed suspicious

are you talking about beyond earth or starships?

beyond earth seemed like "civ 5, but on an alien planet," when really what i want is civ in space, with a little bit of polish

He walks in and writes his name on the drat box before they sell it so maybe you should actually think before you post. Topic Locked.

i played about an hour of beyond earth the other day and as far as i can tell it's essentially the fourth civ 5 expansion and a reskin rolled into one. that's not entirely bad though. at least they added the quests and expedition things (that as far as i can tell everyone gets since i've seen every single event that showed up in a preview youtube and exactly no other ones).

that said the quests are just worse versions of an actual good scripted and dynamic events system that paradox has. it's still civ5 and everything that implies at the end of the day. maybe someone will make a cool mod for it?

it is wholly mediocre. nothing stunningly bad, but pretty much vanilla civ v with alien forests instead of human forests. and instead of coal, alien rocks. instead of building tall, build wide with trade routes in every city. then go insane managing trade routes.

instead of playing beyond earth, set it so everyone has every technology in civ 5 and disable the science victory. it's horribly unbalanced but still better than beyond earth

I liked it but I also liked Civ V. It's Civ V in space. Orbital units and hover units added some neat tactical concepts, and the affinity system meant new units were less tied to specific technologies and more tied to overall progress. But aside from that it's Civ V in space.

So they basically did the thing where the new game they produced is more or less just a mod for an older game released at full retail price?

Yes. The aliens are literally barbarians that can heal extra in certain tiles, which hurt your units until you research certain stuff or acquire Fun Points for a given faction. I instantly hated this game when I turned the difficulty up one notch and the aliens killed every station within trading range and every single unit I'd made all game that wasn't within attack range of the city itself. It's like that Raging Barbarians mod but a game, apparently.
