OOC: That was in response to the project completion.

EDIT: On a separate note, you kind of made two actions in one with building the temple and inspiring Sameal. Everyone, in future remember that nothing can happen without an action (player or oracle). Projects can resolve differently than expected (e.g. a trade mission to acquire vital resources ends with us killing the other traders and stealing their stuff), but it can't resolve with extra effects (e.g. killing them and stealing things, then building an outpost or something similarly added-on). Even small things can take time and dedicated effort - at least a week, for a project.

Summer -- Week 1

quote:

A contingent within the community demand to be heard. Who are they? What are they asking for?

The young Council initiates, typically unheard from until their training is complete, have had enough of the uproar concerning the recent omen. They urge calm and reason with the sense of superiority and know-it-all-ism that seems to be common among all those on the cusp of adulthood. Mezem in particular has been vocal, reading aloud at length about natural phenomena in front of the temple.

Action - Start a Project

There are strangers in the area, as the smoke attests. Lana and her rangers are embarking on a recon mission to learn more about these newcomers, and to judge what, if any, threat they pose.

Project Complete: Despite their poor tools, Barton and his crew have managed to plant a fair number of trees near the encampment, and as spring draws to a close, they are fairly flourishing. Add Abundance: Fruit

Action - Discover Something New: We found Kalen.

He had walked back to our old homestead. He found a good spot to sit under a tree where he could see the burned out ruins, and that's where we found him dead. He looked calm, as if he had finally forgiven himself for what had happened.

Action - Start a Project: Create stone tools.

We need tools to work the lumber that surrounds us. Metal would be better, but with so many of us away from home on various missions, we should not spread ourselves even thinner by sending out a scavenging party just yet. For now, let's make do with what we have and fashion some crude but functional tools from the larger stones that we can find in the river. We can even make a few spears while we're at it.

Outsiders arrive in the area. Why are they a threat? How are they vulnerable?

A shout of alarm goes up early one morning and a crowd gathers at the western watch post--and so it is that nearly a dozen people get the first glimpse of Him. They could just make Him out, standing stock-still in the morning fog, with a pack of the venom-dogs snarling and capering at his feet. He ignored all attempts at communication; then, without a word, he walked back into the forest and out of sight. The growls of the dogs can still be heard echoing through the trees, however.

The venom-dogs, usually solitary and aggressive, are clearly docile towards him and under his command. If that could somehow be disrupted they might fall upon each other, or retreat.

Summer Week 5

A Project finishes Early. Which one? Why?

The rancor in the community has only gotten worse in recent weeks and physical confrontation is never far away. However when it looks as if the people are going to finally come to blows one of the Council comes to the fore and gives a book of Omens to Melissa. They say that there is too much danger to be worth fighting over, and that too much has been gained and lost. The council says that some of it's power should be devolved to the Oak followers and that there is much that even the old tomes do not speak of. They offer to teach not just the best, but anyone who wishes the time to study. A new idea is happened upon: "We are all us".

Turn the community against the council is completed, it is a failure but causes the council to understand that it doesn't need to always have the whole say. I am going to reduce my own contempt token.

With a new Silent People encampment on our doorstep and an effort to overthrow the Scarred Ones underway, we are vulnerable. It's time to look after our own safety. First, we must be vigilant - we post guards with torches around the settlement at all times. Then we must be safe - no one is allowed outside after dark save for the Council and the guards. No one is to travel alone.

We will do whatever it takes to survive.

Action - Start a Project: Give back the Silent Child

It is clear why the Silent People grow bolder. They have come for the child, a baby boy. Elicia has grown attached to the quiet babe, but we must return him to his people. We must do this quickly. There is much to be done before winter comes and every strong lad we have on guard duty is a pair of strong hands that are not gathering food or supplies.

It takes a week but he convinces Elicia to give him the child. He leaves her sobbing and inconsolable. He has armed two guards with two of our working guns and with them at his side, he brings the Silent Child to the river. They cross the shallows and by the time they've made it to the other side, the Silent People have appeared out of the forest and surround them. A tall man with piercing blue eyes steps forward. Ushar also steps forward and offers the child to him. Without a word, the tall man takes the child gently into his arms. As one, the Silent People turn and walk back into the trees. Not one of them looks back.

Let us hope that this act will be the beginning of a peaceful relationship with the Silent People.

Project Completed Sameal returns. This shocks the majority of the tribe who had assumed that the stranger had killed him. He is suprised to learn that someone could have tamed the dogs, because he has collected enough skulls to fill an entire basket. These are mounted on to the side of the temple and Sameal mentions how he saw people covered in scars moving through the trees doing the same thing he was, though not with as much skill. He now has a large and livid scar running across his face, but the local woods are now lacking a "true" apex preadator, more deer have been sighted.

Someone leaves the community. Who? What are they looking for?

With Silent People, scarred folk, and the man with the dogs all surrounding the village, Ashtun has made no secret of his constant fear. Even after the Silent People leave he's convinced that they will return to punish us for taking the baby. After the village misses the mass of fish he becomes convinced that following them would be to everyone's benefit. He brings it up to a few of his friends but gets no support; so instead of taking it to the Council he leaves in the middle of the night with some food, an axe, and a wolf pelt. Some of the trackers go after him the next day and find his footfall along the river, but don't recover him. Footsteps on the map to the east.

Action - Discover Something New: Two days after the Silent People leave with their babe, a handful of them reappear at the water's edge. After making sure they have been noticed, they cross the river and stop by the Storm Oak. An older woman stands apart from them and shakes a branch at the Storm Oak in a slow, ritualistic manner. After a few minutes of this she sees Ushar in the crowd of our people watching, and beckons him over. She presents the branch to him, coaches him through how to shake it properly, then claps him on the shoulder and leaves with her people. Whatever the branch is supposed to be--worn, bare of leaves, with old metal charms tied to it with leather strands--she leaves it with us.

Summer- Week 10

A project fails. Which one? Why?

Following the interactions with the silent people some in the village begin to question the wisdom of arming ourselves even further, why should we be so keen to enact conflict? Despite the protests of Lana it is decided that conflict should be avoided, as the omens and books speak of the value of co-operation at this time. Perhaps when Autumn comes and conflict is seen as more vital, then we can start to look for war.

Action- Discover something New.
We discover several of the scarred people coming towards us, they appear friendly but have many wounds. They speak of how the beast of the West fell upon their encampment and how they disagreed with their elders to stay. They have come to try and settle near us, for we are known to be hunters.

Project Complete- In a Grand Ceremony both Mathias of the council and Melissa of the Oak secure the final book into the fresh holdings of the tree. All around there are whoops and cheers as a celebration of Unity here. Once the two siblings are pulled apart Tory realizes the enormity of her action, apologizing to Orenthal and offering to help him start again. During a meeting of the Council, Mezem surprises everyone by standing and confessing to killing his brother. He calmly states that he saw Sameal as a threat to the future of the community - his opposition to the Council was dangerous and his successful hunt had elevated him into a position where he could have done serious damage to the Council's efforts. He details how he dosed Sameal's food with venom he extracted from a fang he pulled from one of the skulls mounted on the side of the temple. He does not express any regret or remorse. He does not mention the fight between them all those months ago.

He submits himself to the Council's judgment, explaining that the expansion of Barzil's investigation was wasting time better spent rebuilding and preparing for winter.

Action - Hold a Discussion: Mezem must be cast out for this. We cannot abide a murderer among us.

Casting a mere child into the wilderness would be a cruel mercy - it would be kinder to kill him quickly, ourselves.

OOC: You forgot to advance the other project.

Send him to live among the Scarred men and try to heal their illness. If he dies, so be it. If he is untouched, so be it.

Autumn – Week 7

quote:

Conflict flares up among community members. As a result, a project fails.
Work is steady on the new burial ground until someone raises the question of the scarred folk. We cannot leave diseased bodies lying above ground, and they encroach further on our territory every day. This talk angers Lana and her rangers, who argue that we should have driven them off earlier – then there wouldn't be a curse-sickness festering on our border. Arguments arise over blame, duty and the correct treatment of the dead, and our own bodies go unburied.

Action – Start a Project: Tory has barred herself in the centre of her mother's temple and taken it upon herself to learn the secrets of the branch left in our care by the Silent people. She was nearby when the Silent elder showed Ushar how to use it, and believes she can replicate the technique and regain face.
