"For the Emperor."

There was a terrible noise.
There was a terrible silence.

In hindsight, doing an amphibious raid at night with no preparation might have been a bad idea.

Still, Sally Strange knew her trade. You wouldn't think that a demon hunter would know much about sneaking along rivers, but at your glance, she gave a terse explanation. "The River Styx runs through Hell. It can be useful to travel it... quietly." You winced at that. You knew you weren't very quiet, but she was like a hole in the night. You felt like one of the Caliph's Elephants next to her, and she essentially made you lie down in the boat and not move at all. She even narrowed her eyes at you when you tried to breath quietly, so you tried to hold your breath as much as you could.

She hunkered down in the boat, the oars slowly sweeping the water. You noted they had been wrapped in black cloth to reduce sight and sound, and you briefly wondered if Sally had taken up smuggling, or knew those who did. Smuggling down the Styx was a risky venture, but it could be profitable. There was always someone willing to break a sanction and trade with the enemy, particularly given their ludicrious mineral wealth. Really, you had no idea where they found so much gold (although rescued prisoners spoke of mines in the depths of hell, where the fires never end). Either way though, it meant you were able to approach Rat Island a lot quieter then you could have hoped.

Perhaps not unsurprisingly, the target village could be described as 'a rat nest.' It was a mess of tunnels and debris, random collections of useless or shiny things, stacked up and tangled and forgotten. There was a simple harbor bay where several other ships were tied up - you could see small rat figures go about their business in the dark. They hadn't seemed to have noticed you, and you considered just sailing in and bluffing your way through. A weaponsmith like yourself might be able to pull something like that off.

Alternatelly, you could try to approach from the southern coast - land the boat in a pile of debris, work your way up. The nest was smallest there, and would be easy enough to push through. The opposite strategy would be to climb the rubbish mountain in the north, and descend from there. It would take longer, but perhaps be less unexpected. You glanced at Sally for ideas, and she nodded, pointed at an alcove you hadn't noticed. Her voice was a quiet murmur, like the sea. "We could enter right through there, if you want. Its direct, and is probably fastest."

What do you do?

"For the Emperor."

There was a terrible noise.
There was a terrible silence.

As you approached the shore, Sally slipped out of the boat, dragged it slowly into the foliage. You noticed that she tied a rope from the hull to a small sapling - enough to protect you from the current, but easy enough to break in case of active escape. She mulled over her options, left a few bottles, carried a few, and nodded to you. You nodded uncertainly back, and then it was into the brush, crawling on your belly. You were covered in mud in moments, and you briefly wondered if that was intentional on her part. She had vanished into the coverings, only her eyes visible, and she quietly pushed branches aside as she advanced. And then you were there, staring at a hole in the ground, even darker then the surrounding area. You could see her teeth smile.

You had the feeling she wanted to say something quiplike, like those trashy novels she read sometimes, but she decided to err on the side of caution. And then she was wriggling into the tunnels, an eel pressing forward into the domain of the rats. You followed with less eagerness, but still kept close. She seemed to be relying on sound and smell almost exclusively, and you passed occasional tunnels without explanation. Eventually, the tunnel opened up enough that you could crawl up to her side, looking down into a small ante-chamber. A small rat-man was talking to itself and working on some sort of mechanical thing, and he was highlighted by the low yellow light of moss behind him. Even so, your eyes squinted at the brightness.

Sally glanced at you, her eyes full of questions. What do you do?

A. Attack and slay. You don't want them to be alerted.
B. Attack and stun. He can be an informant.
C. Attack and kidnap. He seems to know tools, he'll do.
D. Bypass him, look for another route.
